Can plastic grind meat? No. No it can't.

I've seen reviews mentioning the plastic housing cracking from the torque. I've seen reviews mentioning black grease in their meat. Lucky me! I had both happen first try. It's a real bummer that KitchenAid's legendary stand mixers are so beautifully crafted, while their attachments - this isn't the first time I've had trouble with one - are so inconsistent. You might notice that the metal grinder has a much higher review rating. This is because the metal grinder is made of metal, and metal has a lovely reputation for not disintegrating when force is applied to it. You can either buy the metal one now, or buy this one first and buy the metal one later when this one vaporizes itself into your nice bowl of meat.

After the third use of the meat grinder the shaft is broken. Nice and useful product, but the quality of the material from which it is made is very poor.

I had this attachment 6 years using it very few times a year. Always in the box when not in use. Just went to use it and discover the main housing cracked. Not sure what caused it. Maybe caused by placing in the dishwasher?? Believe me, it was not "over used" by any means.

Works great until it doesn't!

Works great until it doesn't. The base of mine quickly developed a crack (where it attached to the mixer) and that's slowly gotten bigger to the point that meat juices squirt out of it upon use. Also, probably unrelated, but worth noting because I notice it when I use the grinder, there's oil leaking from the back of my mixer. It's pretty gross to get on your hands. And, honestly, if you don't mind it's oil, it can easily be mistaken for something edible. I really wish both these issues didn't get worse, but they seem to with each use. I'll likely halt use of the grinder.

My wife bought this for me on Christmas years ago. Love it but for one problem. Plastic housing cracks. And it did not take long for the cracks to appear. I have eight cracks at the back of the housing where it attaches to the mixer. One serious the rest not as bad. I have an automotive stainless steel hose clamp on the housing to keep them from spreading. It needs to be made out of steel. I would give it a 5 but for the cracks. Works fine. As far as lubrication I put vegetable oil on the shaft where it rides in the bushing.
