Q: Is the metal better and do more than the plastic one?
submitted by JohnnyUtah - 2 years ago
A: Hi JohnnyUtah, The metal food grinder attachment includes the sausage stuffer kit.
The food grinder attachment for the stand mixer has received mixed feedback from guests. While many appreciate its ease of use and versatility for grinding various meats and vegetables, concerns about durability and potential breakage have been frequently mentioned. Guests enjoy the convenience it brings to meal preparation, especially for homemade dishes like meatballs and sausages. However, some have experienced issues with cracking and malfunctioning parts, leading to skepticism about its long-term reliability.

Why did I buy a PLASTIC MEAT GRINDER?
Does anyone know where I can order sausage tubes to fit this thing, and if so, are they metal, because I will NEVER EVER EVER buy a PLASTIC meat grinder or it's attachments again!

Two stars for 2 times being used
Give it 2 stars only because I got to use it twice. On the third use, it cracked right where the metal goes into the Kitchenaid. Quite disappointing indeed. I used once to grind pieces of roast and pork for meatballs. Pretty sure it can't be used now.

I didn’t have a real chance to use this product, cause it was sent to me without some parts. I did a return but the status after 2 weeks still shows “when we receive your return we’ll issue a refund”. Which is not actually a review on the product itself but on Target team’s work I’m so disappointed.

Worthless Plastic Junk
Even though I knew the grinder was made of plastic, I didn't think the actual grinding mechanism inside would be plastic. The only part that was metal was the small grinding disk. The actual part that looks like a screw that pushes the food to the metal disk was plastic as well. It didn't gring anything. It didn't push any food out of the disk. It was worthless to me and I returned it.

grinder attachment
I bought my KitchenAid mixer in 2014 and rhe grinder attachment then, It is plastic and cracked like many others tho I did not use it much and only with tender meat (ie beef bottom round or pork loin). I bought a knock off aluminum one but saw immediately the cause of the problems many have had with those. There is a bump on the attachment that is intended to fit in a notch in the mixer housing as well as a depression the screw in the mixer housing is intended to fit into. In the new aluminum grinder (at least the knock-offs) these are set lower than perpendicular with the result that the attachment will not sit vertically. If you try to sit it vertically either the attachment will not go in all the way so that it will not seal causing fluid to enter the mixer motor, or may spin around. It works tho if set at the necessary angle. This and the several other problems these have caused me to buy a new plastic one. These do sit securely vertically. I figured if it lasted 10 yrs that was good enough. But for some reason KitchenAid saw fit to change the design and it is basically the aluminum one in plastic. Nearly none of the parts are transferable from old to new. The blade in new plastic one is not very sharp.

Works well once you get used to it.
Works well after you figure out how to use it. The method for loading and then pushing to food onto the grinder was not entirely intuitive from the design of the item that looked like a cup but was actually the plunger. Maybe clear instructions were available, but we didn't find them.

Worked ok, until it didn't!
Unfortunately, I have a similar story to many others posted here. We have a stand mixer that we have used for many years and it continues to work well. The grinder was an infrequently used attachment that seemed to be working OK. Yesterday, however, the housing for the grinder basically exploded and broke into several pieces. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the mixer isn't damaged, but the grinder is complete destroyed (see pics). I am not sure what warranty coverage is available, although the box it came promises in various places that the grinder is designed for "a lifetime of use" and that there is a "Hassle-Free Replacement Warranty" for this product. Based on our experience, while we have gotten some good use out of this product, it did not live up to the promise of lifetime usage. Based on the other reviews here, it seems we're not the only ones. Caveat emptor.

Should I buy a replacement?
Please note that I am reviewing the meat grinder that I have had for MANY years. At that time, Kitchen Aid was the best mixer on the market, and everyone knew it! I love my mixer and use it frequently to make large portions of mashed potatoes, hamburger for meatballs and meatloaf, etc.. It makes mixing so much easier. So, after getting my mixer as a Christmas gift years ago, I bought the attachments, which I used infrequently, so I was very surprised to see the crack in the meat grinder, that I haven't used in years. Over the years, I have used this attachment for grinding meat to make dog food for my dogs. It had been VERY helpful but I noticed the other day, when I started to grind the meat for the dog's food, again, after several years of not doing so, that the white housing had cracked. But, I wasn't particularly surprised because it, like me, has grown old. So, I came on line to get a replacement for it. Reading the reviews, I am very skeptical about buying a replacement. It seems, after reading the reviews today, that the quality of KitchenAid has declined. One review had a picture of the CRACK in THEIR grinder housing, which looks almost identical to mine! And there are MANY one star ratings for this attachment.. Do you offer guarantees against this piece breaking again? I haven’t used it for many years now, and I hadn't noticed the crack until last week. I've started grinding meat for the dog's food, again, because he refuses to eat dog food, and I don't blame him! I WANT to buy a replacement but the negative reviews are a BIG turn off! I would appreciate a response as to any guarantees that will come with my replacement if I choose to purchase it. Thank you for your time, and I truly hope that KitchenAid still lives up to the wonderful reputation that it has had over the years. I put the grinder attachment in my cart, but I await a response before purchasing it. Thank you.

Bolt Snapped
Only use this grinder to grind up meat. Definitely was not happy when the bolt snapped. And can’t even get replacement parts for it. It worked very well and was so convenient for the few times it did work. Only got a handful of uses out of it before one of the bolts snapped.

Useful for light work. Don't push it.
I bought this item a year ago. It works fairly well for light use, but not for heavy use. If you are trying to grind tougher cuts of meat with sinew I would get a dedicated grinder with a anti-seize mechanism so parts don't break. Which gets me to the three-star part... This past weekend I was grinding some liver. Right after I started I hit some sinew (not sure how that got in there!). The screw that has the key that holds the auger on and drives the blade sheared in half. The rest of the grinder is in great working shape, but I have an auger I can't put back together because there is nowhere to purchase parts. :(

Great results!
I've had this KSMFGA for several years. I buy beef chucks and prork shoilders and make hambuger or sausage. Saves money AND no mystery ingredients! Left-over holiday ham makes great ham salad. Only one concern; the housing is cracked at the mixer end. Doesn't seem to affect performance.

We have used this grinder to process meat. Today, it broke. One of the bolts that holds it all together broke and now we have a whole bunch of meat that we can't grind up. Definitely not happy with this! I wish I could add pictures but when I click on "Add images", nothing happens.
