Q: Can leftover potting mix be saved and stored for months at a time?

submitted by chrisp - 8 years ago
  • A: I wouldn’t recommend it unless you can seal the bag very well. My bag was taped closed but somehow flies/ moths got in and were able to breed. I kept the bag rolled up and taped. It was also stored in an indoor utility closet. Soil definitely wasn’t dry but was infested in a months time.

submitted byShiberu - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes. Our Miracle grow Premium Potting Mix can be stored indefinitely. Simply tape or roll top of potting soil bags shut. If you have additional questions or want more information, please contact us. The following link will take you to our contact page: http://tinyurl.com/noc5mcg

  • A: I keep a bag of potting soil until it is used up and that may take up to a year. There is nothing the matter with it, just add some water and the proper fertilizer and everything will be fine.

  • A: I twist & seal with a tie or ribber band or get a big plastic storage container to use just for this.

Q: Can this potting soil be used with orchids?

submitted by Nicole - 7 years ago
  • A: No. The potting media used for orchids are chosen to imitate “life on a rainforest tree.” Most common types of orchid potting mix consist primarily of small pieces of fir bark that's main function is to stabilize the plant and promote root growth. We would recommend one of our two Miracle-Gro Orchid Potting Mix products, one that is a course blend and one a fine blend. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any additional help to you. Our phone number is 877-220-3089 and we ask that you please refer to your review when calling.

I wrote a review 9 days ago concerning the "Potting" soil. I then purchased the "Garden" soil. Really bad idea! It was full of mold and smelled really really bad! But, I thought I'd just let it dry out and maybe it would be usable...not so! The mold just hardened up. I can not believe that this company has gotten this bad!!!@

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. Mold or fungus may grow in potting mix because it is a living product. The richer the potting soil, the greater the chance for mold or fungus to start. All of the ingredients in our soils are considered natural living products. The mold or fungus you have experienced in your soil will not harm your plants; it is feeding off of microscopic organisms in the soil. These organisms help the soil decay, which causes natural nutrients in the soil. These nutrients are essential to your plant's survival. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. I have been shocked and saddened by Miracle Gro Potting Mix product, which I assume is being marketed as a replacement for Miracle Gro Potting Soil. In my opinion, it is nothing but peat moss and sticks! I have spent the morning picking out 4” clods of hard peat moss and adding huge amounts of Pearlite to make soil fit to grow flowers. I used it a week ago, unamended, in several flower beds, and it turned into concrete within two days! I literally could not loosen the soil with my fingers. Even using a spade, the soil just broke into big, compacted clods. I can hardly believe that Miracle Gro — which has been a gold standard in quality potting soil for decades — has decided to yield to pressure from “green bullies,” whose experience with gardening (if they have any at all) often consists of a few little grow boxes on apartment balconies and a belief that “organic” anything will save mankind — and/or the common malady of chasing after the gods of corporate profit. After all, if you can brainwash customers into believing that Martha Stewart is the real Mother Earth, that her testimony of Miracle Gro Organic soil is actually an altruistic public service announcement, and that they would be foolish to rely on their hard-earned gardening experience and place their delicate, young plants into the LaBreya tar pit of peat moss. I realize this review is sounding rabid. Most people consider me a kind, accommodating person. However, I work so hard each year to grow lovely, healthy flowers and plants, and to be kicked in my shins by a product that should be a support to my efforts, not a Trojan horse of sabotage, is a painful disappointment. I am just so, so sad that Miracle Gro has become another entry on my long list of let-downs.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. We would like to assure you that Miracle-Gro makes every effort during the manufacturing to ensure our products stay as pure as possible. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our soils, consumers should not find large pieces of wood or bark. Most of our potting mixes are made of composted forest products, which provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots of the plant which improves plant performance for years. We want you to be confident in our products. We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. This is a very unusual situation; however, our Miracle-Gro Potting Mix may dry out too much in shipping or storage. When our soils dry out, they become naturally water-repellent due to the peat moss and organic materials that are an important part of the soil mixture. We recommend slowly adding small amounts of water to the soil and thoroughly stir the mix, working the water in with your hands like bread dough. As the mix absorbs moisture, you can add small amounts of water until the soil is thoroughly moistened. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and other soils may dry out too much in shipping or storage. If the soil is dry upon opening the bag we recommend emptying what is needed into a plastic bucket or tub, and slowly stir in a small amount of water. Wearing garden gloves and or using a garden tool work the soil and water together thoroughly until moistened. The white you see may be mold, neither fungi nor molds in our soil that breaks down dead organic matter harm growing plants. While it may be unattractive, it does not pose a risk to plants. Once the product is mixed in and/or is exposed to sunlight and allowed to dry out, the mold should not be an issue. We want you to be confident in our products. We purchased a large amount of soil to fill garden beds, and discovered pieces of broken glass large and sharp enough to cut skin mixed into the soil in several bags. This is a clear safety hazard. We garden as a family and I had to send my kids away while we used gloves to fill the beds and check through the soil as carefully as possible and remove the glass pieces while emptying each bag. In addition the soil had quite a bit mulch and twigs mixed into it.

Every year in last few years, the quality has went down. Large pieces of gravel - stones! Large bits of mulch & sticks- way too many! I can’t even grab a handful without having to sift it. What is going on? Gnats too? Is there a reason you won’t go back to your original formula we all used for decades? I definitely can’t plant seedlings or seeds in this mess - it’s too chunky. I just want soil like you used to make. Also, quality control among bags is so inconsistent. Bought 2 huge bags, one was better than the other, one contained a LOT of rocks & huge chunks of mulch. I want my mulch added by me on TOP of my pots etc - I just cannot understand why every year it gets worse. Every year I buy again thinking surely they’ll listen to our feedback this year….Extremely disappointed. I’m going to have to figure out an alternative to this mess :(

It looks like a bunch of chopped up burlap mixed with mulch and potting soil, with very little perlite. When I water it, balls of burlap show up on the surface. I have pictures but the site won't let me submit them. I used to recommend this to all gardeners -- not this year! Please change it back!

Absolutely disappointed. I have used MiracleGro potting mix for a very long time, and these bags are NOT like the high quality potting soil I am used to. This stuff is absolutely horrible! I am completely disappointed in this product! I can assure you, that I will NEVER purchase another MiracleGro product again. This potting soil has NO soil in it. It looks like it is mix of roots and pine barks. Looks like MiracleGro cut corners, put out a cheap product, and charge premium prices.

Hi, we're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. It is normal to see small pieces of bark and twigs, they are intentional components of our soil, however you should not find large pieces of wood or bark. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-295-6902 if we can further assist.
