Apply a layer of sand (at least 1/2 inch) on top of the soil in your potted plants to prevent the larvae from burrowing and help them die off. Leave the sand in place for several weeks until the problem is gone. Important note: Don't use sand on seedlings or when starting plants from seeds, as it can harm them. In fact, fungus/mold has been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants which is why we do not sterilize the soil. The fungus/mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil/mulch is too wet. The mold and fungus that grow on soils and mulch are safe for people to be around, although, as always, we recommend you use gloves when handling.
