Description

About the Book

In this book, Patrick Mackie transports us to the sumptuous and intoxicating 18th century to delve into the life and work of one of the most dazzling and influential composers in the history of music. From his youth in Salzburg, his journey to Paris with his mother, his difficult relationship with his father, his love affairs, his marriage to Constanze Weber, his operas and keyboard compositions, to his final years and his premature death in 1791, Mozart's life was almost entirely devoted to his work as a composer, teacher, performer, conductor, and producer. However, it is impossible to understand this life outside the context of a Europe immersed in the currents of Enlightenment thought, witnessing the progressive decline of France, the instability of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, and, by extension, Habsburg Vienna. In that era of musical transition from the Baroque to the Classical, Mozart was an innovator. His output encompasses virtually every musical genre of his time. Patrick Mackie opens a new avenue of reflection on the life and work of the composer and highlights his talent for transcending traditional musical structures and creating complex melodies, in which he combines the classical and the avant-garde, one of the many reasons why, today, Mozart continues to be a source of inspiration for musicians and listeners around the world.
