This is the new gold standard in diaper pails! STEP is the only pail that combines best-in-class odor control with a modern, sleek aesthetic that looks great in any nursery AND an easy-to-use foot pedal. Even better? For every single diaper pail sold, Munchkin will plant a tree! We’re on a mission to reduce gassy emissions both inside AND outside the nursery, everywhere. STEP works with both refill rings and snap, seal & toss refill bags, the choice is yours! To lock-in the stink, the pail relies on the odor-busting duo of lavender-scented Arm & Hammer baking soda and our patented self-sealing technology, sealing in odors as the lid closes. Lastly, each STEP comes with a Munchkin lavender-scented PUCK, which continuously absorbs odors while the pail is not in-use and keeps your nursery smelling sweet (like babies should!). This is the perfect pail to have in your home, and also works as a great registry item! Take a deep breath, because the Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail has arrived.

Q: Is this lid on this supposed to close on its own or no? I have to push it down every time.

submitted by MelissaH - 6 years ago
  • A: You have to push it down every time to close the bag inside.

submitted bynathanwj - 6 years ago
  • A: You do have to push the lid down to close it. The pedal is to open the lid only.

submitted bypaulwilder - 5 years ago
  • A: I have to push mine down sometimes. Major con for this bin is that you have to push the dirty diaper down into the bag rather than just dropping it in. It's a little gross.

submitted byDeniseKory - 6 years ago
  • A: should close on its own, but times you may have to push on it.

submitted bymellmell - 6 years ago
  • A: Ours is the same way. I don't think it's supposed to close on its own.

Q: Searching for adult diaper pail. Will this hold adult depend size diapers.

submitted by Rp - 5 years ago
  • A: Yes, I think this will be fine. I use it for my elderly dogs diapers. Good luck!

submitted bymell mell - 5 years ago
  • A: Good morning. At this time we do not make/sell any diaper pails (including our STEP Pail) that are made/tested for use with adult diapers.

Q: Tell me about the noise when you step on the pedal to open it.

submitted by TNFLATLANDER - 5 years ago
  • A: The unit is plastic and there is a slight ratcheting sound primarily from the lid when depressing the pedal to open the lid. Once the lid is open; you have to push it closed with your hand. I have opened it with my baby sleeping in the same room and it is quiet enough it does not wake her.

Q: hello, I've never used one of these before, much less even looked at one. i haven't had the baby yet, but i did get this as a gift. i just wanted to know, when it gets full, how do you take it out?

submitted by Boostedb - 5 years ago
  • A: There is a spot on the inside of the pail where you cut the bag. You then tie the bottom of the bag and fill it up again and again.

submitted byQsmomma - 5 years ago
  • A: I suppose you want to know how to dispose of the bag lined inside the pail? This is literally a trash can made especially for dirty diapers so you will simply need to remove the full bag and toss that away. You'll then replace the bag and bam, that's it.

Q: Can the Genie bags be used in this pail?

submitted by Debi - 6 years ago
  • A: I have tried the up and up genie refills and they fit so I would assume so, but did not try the brand name genie refills

submitted byDissatisfied - 6 years ago
  • A: Good afternoon, Debi. The Step Diaper Pail cannot be used with Diaper Genie branded bags. For a list of bags that can be used with the Munchkin pail please visit our website: http://www.munchkin.com/all-potty/diaper-pails-refills.html

Q: How many diapers can this hold? I know the only size down only holds 30..

submitted by Vcarlson - 6 years ago
  • A: This holds about 30-40 size 2 diapers I'd say. I can never smell the diapers. Great product!

submitted byAmblk - 6 years ago
  • A: Good morning. The Step Diaper Pail can be used with the individual Arm & Hammer Refill bags which hold up to 30 diapers each and with the refill rings which can hold up to 272 bags each ring.

Q: how often do the odor pucks need to be replaced?

submitted by new momma - 7 months ago
  • A: Good morning! The Arm & Hammer Pucks should be replaced every 60-90 days for freshest results.

submitted byMunchkin - 7 months ago

Q: What is the model number for this pail? Trying to locate replacement Arm and Hammer pucks has proven to be difficult. I ordered some on another site and they were not the same size.

submitted by Bgotts - 7 months ago
  • A: The Arm & Hammer refill puck, is called the The Puck. It is one large, single pack Arm & Hammer freshener and it will work with our Arm & Hammer Step diaper pail, and our Arm & Hammer PAIL.

Q: Does it have an air freshener type smell?

submitted by angelicness11 - 9 months ago
  • A: Good afternoon, when using the puck with your Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail, it will provide a Lavender-scented baking soda smell.

Q: Can this be used as a regular trashcan once baby is no longer in diapers?

submitted by Angelica - 9 months ago

Verdict after 2 years of use

I bought this when my daughter was born, and she's a little over 2 now. I felt compelled today to come back and write a review because I freaking love this thing. I went down a rabbit hole (you know, postpartum hormones) trying to figure out which diaper pail was the best, obsessing over negative reviews, worried my whole house would reak of poorly-deodorized baby feces... but I chose right and this thing works. It worked with newborn diapers and still works with size 5s. There are people who complain about having to push the diaper through the hole and getting diaper goo on their hands. Listen, I've literally never had a problem with this - you gotta make it a tight little burrito hot pocket first. You can't be throwing it in open and floppy. The only times I've ever had a smell creep out is when we've left some rank 3-4 day old poops composting in there and we open the top for 2 seconds to throw a new diaper in. Easy fix - we (my husband) changes out the bag, and voila, smell gone. Also, the deodorizer is a nice touch, probably not necessary, but a light, non-nauseating lavender scent that I've grown slightly attached to. This may or may not also work for cat poop.

Love that you don’t have to have two hands free to use this. It really keeps the smells in with the twist close function. I don’t use the scent attachment because I didn’t think it was necessary and I don’t love artificial fragrances.

Loud Cranking Noise When Closing

Megan - 27 days ago
The pail has a very loud cranking sound when closing and more than half the time the bag opening remains opened so as to let all the smell out. I would definitely not recommend this. The cranking sound is so loud you can hear it from rooms away. Not good.

I added this to my registry because it had good reviews and HAD to be good because of the price point, right? Wrong!! First of all, it really doesn’t hold THAT many diapers. Secondly, you have to shove your hand inside the opening in order to throw away the diaper… not sanitary. Also makes a horrible cracking/grinding sound that scares baby when you close the lid, unless the diaper is shoved far down (which again has to be done with your hand going through the narrow opening.. rubbing against your wrist and going up your arm). The step lever only opens the pail and doesn’t close it. I really don’t understand the price or who who was responsible for designing this… did they even test it out? It’s really not good. Save your $ and just get a regular trash can with a lid… trust me.

If there was an option for zero stars, I would’ve given that! I purchased the diaper pail before my baby’s arrival in January, and started using it after my baby’s birth in April. I’ve used it only for 3 months and the inner lid doesn’t rotate anymore, which stinks up the entire room! So disappointed that such a pricey item only lasted for 3 months!

Expensive Trash Can

2 out of 5 stars

Nicole - 3 months ago
I have to say that for the price, this thing is a piece of junk. I put it on my registry because it seemed to have better reviews than the diaper genie, but I should have just gone with the cheaper option. When you close the lid, maybe the first time it is nice and quiet and twists the bag shut, but after you put one or two diapers in- it makes a horrible cranking sound and doesn’t twist closed on the inside like it’s supposed to. Also, like others have said, the front door doesn’t stay closed either. It serves the purpose in that I treat it like a very expensive trash can, nothing special. I’m not mad because I didn’t pay for it, but would definitely not recommend it.

I like the style however the front door doesn’t stay shut no matter what I try. I’ve seen multiple reviews stating the same thing, was a shower gift but not holding up - also has the terrible cranking noise each time I shut after adding a diaper.

Thank you for your feedback, Alyssa. We are sorry to hear about the experience you had with the Munchkin STEP Diaper Pail. We suggest emptying the pail frequently so it doesn't become overloaded. If the bag is holding too much weight, the lid can crack from the pressure. If you are still experiencing this issue, please reach out to our Customer Satisfaction Team at cserv@munchkin.com for assistance. If you prefer, you can also call 1-800-344-BABY (2229) or text 1-805-344-BABY (2229).

DO NOT BUY THIS PAIL! I am so confused by the good reviews. The step only opens the pail, then you have to manually shove the dirty diaper down through the hole and then shut the top with your dirty hand. It doesn't shut easily and makes a HORRIBLE LOUD sound when you push it shut. I thought this was normal and have been enduring the agony every diaper change, but everyone that comes over here to help with the baby complains about it too and says how much better their diaper pail is. So now I'm out this money and off to buy a different one...

You Have To Manually Close The Lid For This In Order For It To Close. It Does Not Fit Too Many Diapers So You Have To Dump And Switch Out The Bag By Day 2. Poor Design. Not Worth The Money.
