Q: Does it have to be used as dual?

A: There are two small screws at the top of the trash can, you can remove them and remove the divider to make it a single compartment. The ring that holds the bag in place is separated for dual compartments though, so you may need a new single ring. Does work though.

Not a good option if you fill it with plastic bottles on recycle side. The plastic divider is weak. The recycled bottles tended to get jammed due to the design of this side by side style with weak material. Ours lasted for a couple of years but it was always a pain to unlodge the recycle trash. In order for this not to happen, we would have to empty trash and recycle before it was filled up (probably at halfway mark). It finally broke and I ended up removing the plastic divider so that it is now only used for trash. I will have to purchase another (different type of can) for recycle trash. Good temporary can but nothing very durable for both garbage and recycling storage.
