One bottle can treat up to 162 mounds. Simply sprinkle powder over the mound and let it work its magic — no need to water-in. Use it as a mound treatment for home lawns and around ornamental plants (including flowers, shrubs, and trees). Follow label instructions to determine how much product is needed based on mound size. For best results, apply product while ants are active. To keep fire ants at bay, use as part of the Ortho® 2-Step System - use Ortho® Fire Ant Killer Broadcast Granules (sold separately) as a second step to prevent new mounds from forming for up to 6 months.

A: Thank you for your question. Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer1 is not registered for use on or around any edible crops. Do not apply this product under the branch spread (root zone) of any edible trees, shrubs or garden plants. We suggest keeping this product 24 inches away from any edible plants. Should Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer1 be applied in a garden area, you must wait one year to plant edibles. If this product is used inside the root zone of fruit or nut trees, you must wait 1 year to harvest.

Q: I have used this product on an ant pile recently and white powder substance still is present after 3 days. Is this normal? And can my dog be around it since it had been days?

A: Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer1 is designed to release the active ingredients and not dissolve in water. The white substance you see, granules and the remaining carrier, will disappear over a period of several weeks under normal weather and watering conditions. Once the dust has settled on the ground it is ok for dogs and cats, to enter the area.

Q: Hi, I purchased yesterday and used for the first time. I know bottle says to stay away until dust goes away. My son likes to big hunt in the area where I had to use product? What would be a safe amount of time before he can bug hunt there again?

I've been using this product for about a year. I was unaware that it needs to be used in tandem with the granules for the best results. Will be trying that soon. This smells, one should always read labels, the smell should let you know DANGER, wear gloves and a mask, if you have sensitive skin make sure you are covered. I have two dogs, when applying I block off the area for 24 hours, then spray it down. Most labels work for bigger heavier dogs, not small breeds. I have not had a problem with "off gas" as others complain, again I rinse the area after the ants are dead. There are times when the small dose does not work. In those cases I stir up the mound then quickly apply. Only apply the recommended dose. Other wise you can kill you grass and make a mess for pets. Product has gone up in price, less in the package. Would be nice if it came with a long handled pre-measured spoon to apply the product.

Great Product!!!
I have used Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer for the first time and am really pleased with the results. It is easy to use and works just as described. I had many fire ant mounds and beginnings of mounds in my yard this year and now all are gone! I will continue to use this product as other fire ants try to move in to my yard in the future.

Works great for cockroaches
Someone suggested this to me to get rid of a cockroach infestation that I have been fighting for years with all kinds of bug bombs, different chemicals, different at home remedies and nothing worked I put this down and within a day the number of roaches that were dead was amazingly high and every day now less and less or alive to where I’m only seeing babies and they are dying this works top notch for cockroaches. It’s embarrassing to say, but I pick them up from somebody else’s house when I was visiting them did not know they were in my bag, and I have been fighting them for years. This product did it it has helped me become sane again.

I work in a warehouse in an industrial complex. Nothing but concrete parking lots and buildings for a 1/4 mile in any direction and somehow the fire ants got under the threshold of my office door and had invaded my office. I should have done this as i was leaving work for the evening and turned off the AC and worn a mask. Anyhow, The smell lasted an hour or so, but instantly and for the next few hours the ants were dying. Back to work on Monday, no smell and tons of dead ants everywhere.
