Do not apply this product under the branch spread (root zone) of any edible trees, shrubs or garden plants. We suggest keeping this product 24 inches away from any edible plants. Should Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer1 be applied in a garden area, you must wait one year to plant edibles. If this product is used inside the root zone of fruit or nut trees, you must wait 1 year to harvest.

Q: I have used this product on an ant pile recently and white powder substance still is present after 3 days. Is this normal? And can my dog be around it since it had been days?

  • A: Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer1 is designed to release the active ingredients and not dissolve in water. The white substance you see, granules and the remaining carrier, will disappear over a period of several weeks under normal weather and watering conditions. Once the dust has settled on the ground it is ok for dogs and cats, to enter the area.

Q: Hi, I purchased yesterday and used for the first time. I know bottle says to stay away until dust goes away. My son likes to big hunt in the area where I had to use product? What would be a safe amount of time before he can bug hunt there again?

Nearly Dead DOG

I disliked that my dog almost died from this product! He was in someone’s yard that, unknown to us, had used this product 4 days earlier. My dog never ingested it. He simply walked over an area that was treated 4 days earlier and it had RAINED since the application. My dog started seizing and drooling two hours later after licking his paws. After a $1200 vet bill, thankfully he is alive. Can’t believe this product is sold without better warnings on the front.

Good priced…

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this ortho ant killer in exchange for my honest review So love how clear the label it the ease at opening it and the bottle is sleek, however that’s about it for me… It smelled horrible when I opened it it blew up at me glad I did it outside. I sprinkled it on gave it its time and still just ants for days. Also huge pain had to chaperone the dog make sure she and none of the kids went over there I get it’s a killer but ugh. I might give it another try I’ll update if it changes my mind. It is got a good price I guess

Smelly but effective.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have a few red ant mounds in my mulch beds below my plants. I’ve noticed an increase in red ants in the porch since my plants have been planted and are growing. They love crawling around in there… I don’t care for them much. Using this product I’ve seen a slight decrease in red ants on my porch now, they are still there but not as many. The product is easy to open with the help of the lid notch, just read the directions. It has a unique smell that I’m not a fan of, but I’m sure it’s helpful to the ants. I sprinkled I’d say maybe a teaspoon over the mulch where the ants are but it looks a lot. The whiten powder can’t deter people from touching and staying away. When using I suggest wearing gloves and a mask. There is a lot of dust kickback.

SUPER Effective!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Fire Ant Killer is SUPER effective! After 3 days 3/4 of the mounds I treated are completely gone. The one that is still only slightly active went deeper than I realized and will be getting another treatment, but it's 99% clear. The smell is very mild compared to other fire ant killer products. It's so easy to apply. The timing of application is the hardest part since you have to avoid rainy days. And you get a LOT of product for the price.

Great product for stopping pesky ants!

Good product, but Buyer Be Safe

I've been using this product for about a year. I was unaware that it needs to be used in tandem with the granules for the best results. Will be trying that soon. This smells, one should always read labels, the smell should let you know DANGER, wear gloves and a mask, if you have sensitive skin make sure you are covered. I have two dogs, when applying I block off the area for 24 hours, then spray it down. Most labels work for bigger heavier dogs, not small breeds. I have not had a problem with "off gas" as others complain, again I rinse the area after the ants are dead. There are times when the small dose does not work. In those cases I stir up the mound then quickly apply. Only apply the recommended dose. Other wise you can kill you grass and make a mess for pets. Product has gone up in price, less in the package. Would be nice if it came with a long handled pre-measured spoon to apply the product.

Great Product!!!

I have used Ortho Orthene Fire Ant Killer for the first time and am really pleased with the results. It is easy to use and works just as described. I had many fire ant mounds and beginnings of mounds in my yard this year and now all are gone! I will continue to use this product as other fire ants try to move in to my yard in the future.

Works great for cockroaches

Someone suggested this to me to get rid of a cockroach infestation that I have been fighting for years with all kinds of bug bombs, different chemicals, different at home remedies and nothing worked I put this down and within a day the number of roaches that were dead was amazingly high and every day now less and less or alive to where I’m only seeing babies and they are dying this works top notch for cockroaches. It’s embarrassing to say, but I pick them up from somebody else’s house when I was visiting them did not know they were in my bag, and I have been fighting them for years. This product did it it has helped me become sane again.

Killed my dog.

I sprinkled this product, my yorkie loved the taste of it and it unfortunately eneded up killing her. We are very sad about this, and now our family has a void. We wish that I NEVER had bough tthis product and the lable should actually state that may cause death to pets if ingested. Be clear about the results of animal ingestion, they are family! Please make this foul tasting for animals!

Works fast and great

I work in a warehouse in an industrial complex. Nothing but concrete parking lots and buildings for a 1/4 mile in any direction and somehow the fire ants got under the threshold of my office door and had invaded my office. I should have done this as i was leaving work for the evening and turned off the AC and worn a mask. Anyhow, The smell lasted an hour or so, but instantly and for the next few hours the ants were dying. Back to work on Monday, no smell and tons of dead ants everywhere.

Seriously works great to kill fire ants

Love this product. I’ve used it for 10 years or more. It kills Fireant mounds quickly, while many other products just cause the ants to relocate. I learned long ago not to use it against the walls of my home. If mounds are against your foundation, sprinkle a small amount an inch or two away from the foundation. Make sure water or rain won’t wash it against your foundation. It really works great - just be careful to use it in a manner to keep the oder away from your house.

Best Fireant Killer Anywhere!

Found this product several years ago and it's the ONLY thing I use! Very effective! Living in the south, they're a huge problem! Wish I could buy it in bulk. I go through a lot of it during the summer.

It kills

I watched a friend of mine who was infested with bed bugs apply this product to bed mattress and box spring. He sprinkled it on the carpets and living room area furniture and it eliminated the best bugs.
