The air conditioning process is, in simple terms, moving warm humid air outside, so the exhaust hoses are designed primarily to move heat and humidity from a room to the outside. However, Fan Mode recirculates air throughout the room without cooling/warming the air and the exhaust hose isn't used for this process. Therefore, you can use the unit as a fan without the need to connect the hose to a window. Please keep in mind that, if you ever need to use any of the other modes, the hose is necessary, and it has to be installed.
