Immersive, emotional and allegorical
The Only Girl in Town was not what I expected. The book is composed of short chapters, is told in dual timelines, and moves quickly. The story follows July Fielding, for whom nothing has been the same since the summer before her senior year. It is difficult to review without major spoilers. She finds herself alone in her town, all the people and animals gone. The story unfolds intensely, each twist and turn adding a piece to the puzzle. We know something happened that senior year, but it is not until the end that we understand. There are still many questions left for the reader at the end, but I think this may have been intentional. It certainly deserves to be re-read. The pacing is masterful, the writing lyrical and allegorical. The reading experience is utterly immersive. The Only Girl in Town is urgent, emotional, compelling and impossible to put down. Readers need to be aware of trigger warnings.

gripping YA mystery/thriller
Everyone in July’s small town has suddenly disappeared. The message “GET TH3M BACK” keeps appearing around town. July finds some objects that remind her of her loved ones while trying to piece together their mysterious disappearances. THE ONLY GIRL IN TOWN was a gripping YA mystery/thriller. I flew through reading this book as I didn’t want to put it down. The short chapters and writing style created a sense of urgency and agitation that characterized some of July’s feelings and really pulled me into her world. I liked the back and forth between timelines, learning things about July’s past and how they connected to the present as the story unfolded. I was satisfied with the ending; however, I can see why some readers may not be. Overall, this would be an excellent book for group discussion. I particularly liked the author’s exploration of mental health themes throughout the book. I really enjoyed THE ONLY GIRL IN TOWN and would highly recommend it to fans of YA mystery/thrillers. This is the first book I’ve read by Ally Condie. I’m interested in checking out her other books. Thank you to Dutton for the gifted ARC.

Unexpected ending
The ending of the novel The Only Girl in Town by Ally Condie was unexpected. I loved the plot of this novel. The plot was confusing at times, but it kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The plot of this book was sometimes fast paced other times it was slow paced but no matter what it kept me hooked to the storyline. I wanted to read this since Ally Condie is one of my favorite authors so it's an automatic read for me. I also wanted to read it because the synopsis of the story also pulled me in. One character I loved was July's cat Yolo due to them being a cat and cats are awesome. I also liked them because they were always cracking me up and made the story even better. Some characters I disliked are Sam, Alex and Ella. I don't like Sam because of what he did to July. I didn't like Alex because he liked her one minute than couple days later he's all of a sudden over her. I didn't like them being together at the jump in the end breaking July's heart. It made me mad for her. Also in my opinion cliff jumping is stupid, dangerous, and it's not worth it. I definitely recommend reading this book. I give it a five out of five stars. I also recommend reading the authors trilogy Matched it's one of my favorites.

Not What I Was Expecting, But Still Good
Nothing has been the same for July Fielding since the summer before senior year. She had her loyal best friend, Alex, who always had her back. She had Sydney, who pushed her during every cross country run and sometimes seemed like she knew July better than she knew herself. And she had Sam, who took her breath away and told her she was everything. Now, July is alone. Every single person has disappeared in the small town of Lithia. No Sam. No Alex or Sydney. No family. July's only clues at solving the mystery of their disappearance is a series of objects, each one reminding her of the people she loved the most, and a mysterious message: GET TH3M BACK. This turned out to be less of a mystery/thriller than I thought it was going to be but I still really enjoyed it. The underlying message was really great and it resonated with me because it hit very close to home.
