A: Both are hospital grade. S1 is rechargeable (can operate on battery or plugged in). S2 must be plugged in.

submitted byCR - 7 years agoA: The S1 is a rechargeable battery meaning you can take it and use it anywhere. The S2 is the same pump, but it only plugs into electric, which limits its use. I used the battery operated one and found out was helpful to be able to use it in the car or wherever I needed, versus being tied to an outlet to use it. It’s light, so you can pick it up and move with it, if necessary.

Q: I see this is "hospital strength" but is it "hospital grade"? My insurance doesn't cover hospital grade, so I want to make sure it is a different desination than hospital strength.

A: While the Spectra may have great suction, it is not designed to be used in a hospital setting by 150 women per year. Watch out for marketing words. Hospital 'strength' is not the same as multi-user.

The S1 Plus and S2 Plus are widely accepted by insurance companies nationwide. The S1 Plus pump is similar to the S2 Plus in terms of power. The only difference is the rechargeable battery being in the S1. If your insurance company provides the S2 Plus as a covered pump, you may have to specifically request an S1. A: Hi Autumn! Spectra pumps are designed to be used with Spectra bottles. Although designs with similar threads can be successfully used. In some cases, bottle convertors may be purchased to allow other designs to be used.

Q: Are there milk storage bags that are compatible or recommended to go with this pump? I'm a first time mom, I'm a little unsure about the best method from pump to storage.

A: Hello! Spectra offers breastmilk storage bags for use with all pumps. When choosing a storage bag, be certain it is BPA free, has a leak tight seal, and is designed for breastmilk storage. Always follow published recommendations for breastmilk storage, thawing, and reheating.

The breastfeeding kit also includes nipples and "bottles" that attach to the storage bags, which eliminates the need for transferring milk and the use of actual bottles that you would need to wash. Way less work. It's my first pregnancy, and I am doing as much research as I can to take advantage of anything that is out there that will make our experience smoother! We received our Kindee breastfeeding kit today, and I am eager to test it!

A: I use the Phillip Avent Natural bottles and they are compatible. Not sure about any other brands.

We do not recommend their use with other manufacturer's products as we cannot guarantee maximum performance and efficiency. Although we do have a Small Bottle Cap Adapter you can purchase which will fit any standard narrow neck milk bottle and fit a Spectra flange on top. Strong pump, works BUT I hate that it doesn’t automatically switch after let down. In my sleep deprived state I’ve forgotten to switch over and waste like 11-15 mns not getting a proper amount of milk out. Tubing is short. Shape is ridiculous and doesn’t fit well in bags. I miss the old medelas

I’m 4 months post partum and started going back to work full time. I originally had the Medela pump and when I started work my supply drastically dropped. Not sure if it was the pump or what but I pumped every 2-3 hours during work hours and I was only getting HALF the amount I usually got. Decided to buy the Spectra and just used it for the first time today at work and tell me how my supply DOUBLED my usual output number. This is a great pump when it works like it should. After 3 months of usage there was a drastic suction decrease. I’ve never been able to pump at one of the higher setting and now using a higher setting isn’t making a difference . We’ve replaced it with new duck valve, tubing and membrane, it didn’t make any difference. I really need another pump bc I’m likely getting clogged now, but this brand seems to be unreliable, especially after reading all these reviews also I’m not the only one with a bad experience.

When I first got the pump I loved it and then all of a sudden in the middle of the night it just stopped working the suction just stopped i was lucky to have my handheld pump the hospital gave me

I had nothing but good things to say about this pump when I started using it. So convenient that it was portable, lightweight AND hospital grade suction, which was important for my low supply. After a few months however my pump stopped charging. I submitted my warranty and the next day I was informed that my warranty was accepted on April 23 however I have still not received my replacement nor have I heard anything from the company. I have called a few times with no answer (their website does say that their phone system is under maintenance however this has been for a few weeks). I have also sent countless e-mails to customer service and warranty with no response. I am very disappointed since this pump was so good before it stopped charging and my backup pump is not nearly as effective.

This is a great pump, it's easy to adjust the suction levels and the night light is a nice touch. It charges quickly and is nicely portable so I can move it from my nursing chair to the couch throughout the day. It's not too loud so it doesn't disturb my sleeping baby.

I bought it 5 months ago and it already stopped working. The suction simply does not work anymore. It’s extremely weak. I bought this in September of 2024. Here we are February and it no longer works. It has a 2 year warranty so I’m in the process of filing the claim through spectra however, I should not have to be doing this at work when I barely pump enough to get my infant through the day at daycare.

I’ve tried multiple pumps and this one is by far my favorite. It helped with my milk supply. Idk if it’s because it’s hospital grade but I highly recommend this breast pump whether you’re going back to work or just want more milk supply. I also love the little night light.

A lot of mixed reviews on all pumps but I decided to go with this one after having an old Medela and a new portable hands free Medela. The hands free Medela is super handy for on the go or when I know I couldn’t use the traditional pump but it just didn’t empty me. I was losing my supply. I purchased this one and I saw an increase right away. It’s nice to be able to charge it and move around with it instead of being stuck to the wall. Great suction and massage options! I would recommend to all! Easy to clean and you can buy additional parts online.

Failed multiple times in various ways in the first year of use. Wouldn't respond when trying to adjust pump settings or would make weird noises. Each time called company and they wouldn't respect warranty. Said it was covered in water but water was on surface of machine. Not internal.

Just stops in the middle of pumping. And most the time, after it stops, it takes 4-5 attempts to get it working again. Super frustrating when trying to pump before the baby wakes or during my break time at work. Not efficient and ends up taking way more time than it should. Go for another brand. I didnt listen to the reviews about it stopping and I wish I had!

I got this after the Medela pump I used 7 years ago was replaced with a new model that was not comparable. Pros - more comfortable than the Medela (the Medela literally hurt to the point I didn’t want to pump anymore). I like the night light option and the rechargeable battery is very convenient. I like that it came with two flange sizes because the 24 mm is too small and 28 is better for me. Cons - I’m not getting any better output with this one. My old Medela from 7 years ago I was pumping 8-10+ oz every 3 hours so I know I should be making a decent amount. I’m lucky to get 2-3 oz in 20-30 min from this. I double checked all the parts were snug. It’s a weak feeling pull. It takes forever to get a let down and I feel like it barely lets down. I need a stronger and faster option like the hospital grade pump. Not sure if it’s defective because I have nothing to compare it to.

I purchased this pump in April on a recommendation from a lactation consultant out of pocket from Target as the one insurance provided to me wouldn’t pump me out. The package appeared to be sealed. Unbeknownst to me the WRONG CHARGING CABLE was inside of the box. When I contacted spectra because the pump wouldn’t charge I was told that I was using the wrong charger. When I responded that this is what came with the pump I was told that I had misplaced the charger and would need to purchase a new pump because not using the spectra charger damaged the pump. I explained that the charger I was using was the one out of the box but the service rep repeated that I had probably misplaced the charger, clearly not listening to me that this was the only charger I had ever received with the pump and that I didn’t know it was “wrong.” I was offered no help for an error I didn’t even know existed. Instead I was advised to purchase a new pump because there was nothing that they could do for me as I was the one using the wrong charger. My insurance will not cover this pump and to have it only last 6 months when it was purchased from a certified vendor Target when it cost $200 is unacceptable. I would not recommend this pump as customer support is nonexistent.

Came with broken vacuum piece, only one side of the pump works. Went back next day to return it and they said cant return it and they didn’t even allow me to EXCHANGE for the same one! Now stuck with $200 brand new pump that only one side works. Went to one target for exchange said it was out of stock and to go to different location then the second location said to leave that they cant do anything and to figure it out and buy parts from the manufacturer

As a full time employed 2nd time mom who has solely breastfed, I painfully went through almost all the brands of breast pumps out there before I found the SpectraS1. Pictured is a 20min pump with my SpectraS1. It's the most milk I have ever extracted with any pump in such a short amount of time. Pumping is so painless and yields so much milk that for the first time, I actually look forward to Pumping. I love this pump! The only thing I would say though is that you make sure you have the right size flange. Take the time to measure your nipple and if the standard 24mm that come with the pump don't work for you, go on Amazon and order your size from their store. This pump will change your life!

I had the Medela, and it hurt. I got the spectra, and the different settings, the flange shape, and the fact that you can do one at a time is amazing. My favorite thing is light, when I am pumping at 3 am it helps so I dont spill my milk or trip.
