Unfortunately, mat made with recycled rubber can have a distinct smell from the manufacturing process. That smell can then be exacerbated by the packaging for storing and shipping. The smell doesn't go away
The smell is awful. I've had it for 2 months, tried airing it out...still stinks. I had it in front of my door, and I could smell it while sitting on my couch. My cat was lying on it for a few minutes and his fur then smelled like it. Not worth the scent. I moved it outside.

Great Doormat, but Strong Smell Initially
Bought this to use inside at our back door. It flattened out quickly, has been pretty easy to clean with a handheld vacuum, and stays in place (it’s on tile). It had a really strong and terrible smell for the first couple of days though, which is why I took off a star.
