A: This part according to the assembly guide is added just before tightening all of the bolts and checking for stability, and may be integral to the stability of the bookcase.

Love this shelf!
I read a lot of reviews on this shelf before I ordered it and I am SO GLAD I ordered them!! Some review talk about a strong smell, my nose is very sensitive and I have had them for 2 months and haven’t had any strong smells. I just love how the elevate my living room. The wood is so nice with the grain, and the black metal is a great contrast against my wall color. I would HIGHLY recommend these! They were so easy to put together and I have gotten tons of compliments :)

Easy to assemble, sturdy. Some shelves are a bit splintery, but they are real wood & not MDF. Shelves are fixed, not adjustable, as expected. Good value for the price.

Very nice bookcase. Really easy to assemble. Only issue I had was that one of the boards was a bit damaged but I was able to repair by lightly sanding and staining that edge. Didn’t want to return and wait for new one.

Strong scent
Box came torn and taped back together. The cross bars for stability are missing. I tried to use the Target app to get the missing pieces but it initiated a return, so not sure what to do now. The wood has a strong cedar scent that I hope will go away. My nose is burning after putting the shelf together. I won’t be able to have it in my home if the scent doesn’t dissipate. Shelf looks nice. I would have given it 4-5 stars if it had arrived with all its pieces and didn’t smell.

Not what it seems. Buyer beware.
Not solid wood as another reviewer mentions. I discovered the delicate nature of the wood when a piece of wood slipped from my hand and it caught my fingernail. I don’t have fake nails. My natural nail managed to dig a chunk out of the wood. I placed that side against the wall so it is not visible. The metal joints are sloppily welded together. It was easy to put together by myself. Had all of the pieces. And it came with instructions. Not sure how long it will last. Definitely going to treat it with kid gloves. All of the pieces were filthy and foul smelling out of the box. It will due for now.

Disappointed - ding and dented shelves, broken foot pad, "barely-there" finish on shelves
Disappointed with the quality of this shelving unit. Every single shelf had a dent, ding or some minor damage - I was able to place them so the damage is at the back and it can't be seen. There were two screw holes that didn't quite line up. I managed to get one almost all the way in. The other one is half out as there was no way to screw it in any further. I thought the shelves were solid wood - they are not. There is a frame on the underside and you can see the seam on the front and sides of the shelves where the frame joins to the top piece. Some of the shelves don't quite line up with the frame properly so there is a small gap between the frame and the shelf. The finish on the shelves is poor and I think they will stain and mark up really easily - I may refinish them myself. so they have some type of protective coating. One of the foot pads was broken off - fortunately, there was a spare in the box, which makes me think that happens a lot. Reading all the 5-star reviews I expected a lot better. On the plus side: easy and quick to assemble (apart from screws not fitting in holes) and it looks good (if you don't look too closely at the dents and dings). I kept it because it was easier than packing it back up and shipping it back.

Target's square 13" canvas bins fit well on these shelves, too for added organization. Had to wipe them down after assembly because there was some dust/residue on some of the shelves.
