Great Nugget Ice with Easy Cleaning Process
The ice capacity from the Opal is incredible. I can use this machine for parties or family dinners and not run out of ice. The descaling process is easy - just one push of a button to clean the unit. It does take ~50min. But it is easy enough to drain, add the cleaning solution, push the clean button and let it run. Then a quick rinse with clean water and you are good to go. The water filter is easy to install and the design looks great on my countertop.

Loud screeching sound
From day one, it makes the loudest screeching sound after about 10 minutes. Have to turn it off it’s so loud and annoying. Really disappointed for the price I paid.

Machine broke in 2 months
Rating 1 start due to having this ice machine for 2 months and it gave out on us. It will not make ice. It shows that it is making ice but will not dispense any.

Don’t waste your time and money
Worked great for three days then a very loud squirming grinding sound started Wasn’t out of water. Shut it down checked all the hoses turned back on ran for about four hours making ice then the sound started again. Took it back for an exchange we are in day three of the second one but it won’t go into Bluetooth mode so that I can set up a schedule with the mobile app. Very disappointed was willing to pay the extra money to get this design as it worked perfectly in our kitchen space. I will be taking it back and will try another brand. But not GE.

Awful
Since the day I started using this it has continuously frozen up and Made the most awful screeching sound. I de scale and clean and let it defrost but within 30 mins it will stop making ice and just make noise

Good icemaker and should last for years.
I love the size of the side tank and is easy to refill. I wish the ice bin didn' t drip when pulled out (hence the need for the drip-tray) as my previous icemaker that was fully enclosed so no dripping. Looks nice on the counter with stainless steel look and a light to see inside ice bin.

Too Noisey
It makes an awful groaning noise after one month of use and fully descaling twice during the first month... It will wake us up in the middle of the night.

Good but bad tasting ice
The machine is effective for making ice. However, the ice has a bad taste after it melts ruining beverages. Yes, we have cleaned and "flushed" the ice maker according to the GE instructions.

We are glad to hear you are loving your Opal icemaker. The key to having your Opal work well for you for a long time are the following. Using distilled water and properly placing the unit so that it is on a level surface and away from direct sunlight to prevent overheating. Run a cleaning cycle 1-2 months and be sure to descale the unit and directed in the manual. Replacing the filter will also help.

Terrific ice production.
It makes great ice nuggets very quickly! It is a bit of a “diva” as it requires more maintenance than I expected. Beautiful design and easy to use. A bit heavy to move around to perform descaling and sanitizing, if you don’t have a sink nearby to drain it.

So Loud
Makes good ice and a good amount of ice, like the integration of the filters now but it can't go more than 20 or 30 minutes without turning to a loud high pitch noise that does not seem normal. We need to shut this thing off many times a day as the high pitch noise becomes too much

We're also big fans of the side tank, it is super convenient and requires less refilling. Another feature we truly appreciate is the connected features with our SmartHQ app. This allows you to schedule ice production, receive maintenance alerts, and even update the software.

Love the updated version!
This is the third opal nugget machine that I have owned. The other two were the basic model with side tank. I love the New model with the sanitizer and the better filter. I live in Florida and the water here is so bad! So having that sanitizer that I can run at least once a week is great on top of the normal cleaning function.

The Opal nugget ice maker is one of our favorites as well! To help you reduce its cleaning and mineral build up, we recommend using distilled water. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale.

2nd Review, Appliance Makes Terrible Sounds
We purchased this appliance in January 2026. This is our second GE Opal Ice Maker, the first maker squealed and leaked water in the interior of the appliance. We have been following all cleaning and descaling directions from the GE instruction manual verbatim and as prompted by the appliance. We have used only filtered water for filling, cleaning and descaling. The filter has been replaced with a GE filter. The appliance makes sounds as if the moving parts and gears are consuming themselves. Attached video.
