The rug is thin and I didn't purchase a pad because of where it'll be located in the house. It would have needed one if it was in the main living area.

The carpet has a smell but literally every carpet I have bought has a smell. The instructions say to air it out. HOWEVER, the carpet is so plush and soft it doesn’t even matter that it has a smell! It feels amazing beneath my feet! I would definitely recommend this rug and it looks so much better than the pictures give it credit. My daughter loves laying on this rug! 5 stars all the way!
