Q: How many pounds do u think that this bookcase will hold.
A: no idea how many lbs but i have stacks of science/medical books on each shelf and it's doing fine. had it going on 2 years
submitted byAD - 5 years agoA: Hi Spink - Thanks for the question. Each shelf holds a maximum of 65 lbs. Have a great day! - Matt
submitted byguest services - 7 years agoTarget staff supportA: Really not sure. The shelves are very sturdy though. We use it for holding photo albums, scrapbooks and other books. Several of the books are heavy college textbooks. Hope that helps.
submitted byCindy - 7 years agoA: I've definitely put at least 60-70 lbs worth of books on each shelf. I'd say I've put even more on some and so far no buckling. Have had the shelves for more than a year and a half and very pleased with them.
submitted byDN - 7 years agoA: The assembly instructions clearly state that each shelf was designed to hold a maximum of 65 pounds.

Q: Do I have to utilize the backing or can that be left off? I am wanting my paint color to peak through but don't know if the backing provides structural support.
A: you can definitely leave the back off. it doesn't provide support.
submitted bymom of 3 - 8 years agoA: I left mine off, it looks great and allows me to have a room divider besides
submitted byFonty - 8 years agoA: I agree with mom of 3 - the back cardboard provides little to no support. It would be fine to not use that. Screwing in the back also was the most time consuming step so you would save yourself a lot of work.
submitted bySparklesa - 4 years agoA: Hello boymom- Thanks for asking on this tall and sleek Threshold Bookcase! As its intended design and use, we’d suggest utilizing the backing of this bookcase. Happy shopping! -Erinn

Q: Is the bookcase in a large carton? Will I need two people to pick up this bookcase carton?
A: Very heavy, definitely requires two people to lift the box.
submitted bySparklesa - 4 years agoA: It is boxed in a carton and it would be difficult for one person to carry without a dolly of some kind. It’s manageable with two.
submitted byDoug - 7 years agoA: Hi londie - Thanks for asking about this popular bookcase. This is a pretty large box. Its shipped in a box about 74.5 inches length x 16.0 inches width x 6.75 inches height. The box also weighs roughly 64.5 pounds. Hope this information is helpful! - Melissa

Q: how difficult is it to put this together?
A: It wasn’t very difficult, but it did take longer than expected. It took us (two people) about two hours to put together, and then another 30 minutes to figure out how to install the anti-tip strap to the wall. That step requires a power drill to make a hole in the wall. Everything else is easy with a Phillips screwdriver. Screwing in the cardboard piece to the back of the unit took close to an hour as there aren’t pre-drilled holes for that step and it uses 46 screws. Directions were clear and easy to follow though, parts are all well labeled and the hardware is packaged in multiple little pouches so it’s easy to find what you need for each step.
submitted bySparklesa - 4 years agoA: I have two of these that I put together by myself and didn't have any problems. The hardest part for me was attaching the back just because there aren't pre drilled holes around the sides of the frame. The instructions are clear, I didn't have any trouble following them or have missing pieces or anything like that.
submitted byKelly R - 7 years agoA: Hi Lorraine from gates – Thanks for asking! If you scroll down on the page the manufacture has the assembly instructions you can view. It does take adult assembly. I hope this helps. – Anita

Q: When fully assembled is it very sturdy or does it have some wobble too it? I will be storing many books and need something that can handle the weight
A: Hi Kurt R – Thanks for asking! This book case has a maximum shelf weight capacity of 65.0 pounds. I hope this will hold all of your books. Thanks for stopping by. - Anita
submitted byAnita - 7 years agoTarget staff supportA: I have had this bookshelf for YEARS and is still as sturdy today as it was when I purchased it and first put it together. It has made it through 3 moves and 4 of the 5 shelves have been filled with NURSING TEXTBOOKS (heavy!!)

Q: Is the color of this bookcase a dark brown or a black? (it says espresso)
A: The color is not consistent for the espresso version from batch to batch. Some have a red tone and others are more of a brown black. If you are set on a specifng tone I would check before buying.
submitted byTwo Tone Sad Time - 3 years agoA: Hello MC- We’re glad you stopped by to checkout this modern bookcase from Threshold! The bookcase color-espresso is more so a beautiful dark brown. We hope this helps! -Erinn
submitted byTarget Team Member - 7 years agoTarget staff supportA: Hi! The bookcase is a Dark brown - like a coffee bean

Q: It's solid wood? What type of wood i.e. what type of tree is it from? Thank you.
A: Hi Marbo - We think this bookcase is a great place to store or display your things! It's made of pine hardwood with a melamine surface, and the backing is MDF. Hope it works well for you. - Shelly
submitted byShelly - 7 years agoTarget staff supportA: The shelves are MDF and the load bearing corners are wood. The sides are made of the same thin cardboard that is used for the backing.
submitted byJulsey - 4 years agoA: I do not think it is wood at all. it is very light and it is very wobbly when you finish putting it together.

Q: How much assembly is required? Thanks.
A: Assembly was easy and the directions were very well labeled and clear but it did take about 2 hours. I guess we are beginners at the pre-fab furniture game!
submitted bySparklesa - 4 years agoA: Hi d - Thanks for checking on this classic bookcase! We've included assembly instructions toward the bottom of the page for you to check out. We hope this helps! - Stephanie
submitted byStephanie - 7 years agoTarget staff supportA: The bookshelves come completely unassembled. If you have a little experience putting together pre-fab furniture, these are not difficult to put together. If you don't have any experience, you might need some help- the instructions aren't fantastic for a beginner. I have a lot of experience and it still took me about 45 minutes to put together each unit.

Q: I see that three of the five shelves are adjustable, do you know which three? Does it include the bottom shelf? Also, are the holes and pegs on the sides or at the back?
A: Is the a way that I can adjust the shelves so i can get 4 shelves 12.5+"for lp.s. Any x-space does not matter. I'd like to order 2 today.
submitted byDon - 4 years agoA: The holes for the pegs are in the front and back of the shelf near the sides. The 3 movable shelves are the top, the 3rd from the top and 4th from the top.
submitted byCasey - 8 years agoA: The fixed shelves are the bottom and the middle ones. The peg holes are in the sides.

Q: Do the legs curve out a bit or are they perfectly straight? I want to put several together and fit onto one wall.
A: They are straight on the outside. The curve you see in the picture is from the inner cut. We have our 4 shelves lined along the wall side-by-side and they are perfectly flush.
submitted bymelanieml - 8 years agoA: If they curve at all, it is just a little. If you're putting them side by side, you may have to sand a bit, but not much at all.
submitted byKB - 8 years agoA: The legs are straight. You could place multiple bookcases together.
