Q: How many pounds do u think that this bookcase will hold.

submitted by Spink - 7 years ago
  • A: no idea how many lbs but i have stacks of science/medical books on each shelf and it's doing fine. had it going on 2 years

submitted byAD - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi Spink - Thanks for the question. Each shelf holds a maximum of 65 lbs. Have a great day! - Matt

submitted byguest services - 7 years ago

  • A: Really not sure. The shelves are very sturdy though. We use it for holding photo albums, scrapbooks and other books. Several of the books are heavy college textbooks. Hope that helps.

submitted byCindy - 7 years ago
  • A: I've definitely put at least 60-70 lbs worth of books on each shelf. I'd say I've put even more on some and so far no buckling. Have had the shelves for more than a year and a half and very pleased with them.

submitted byDN - 7 years ago
  • A: The assembly instructions clearly state that each shelf was designed to hold a maximum of 65 pounds.

    submitted byWayne B - 4 years ago

Q: Do I have to utilize the backing or can that be left off? I am wanting my paint color to peak through but don't know if the backing provides structural support.

submitted by boymom - 8 years ago
  • A: you can definitely leave the back off. it doesn't provide support.

submitted bymom of 3 - 8 years ago
  • A: I left mine off, it looks great and allows me to have a room divider besides

submitted byFonty - 8 years ago
  • A: I agree with mom of 3 - the back cardboard provides little to no support. It would be fine to not use that. Screwing in the back also was the most time consuming step so you would save yourself a lot of work.

submitted bySparklesa - 4 years ago
  • A: Hello boymom- Thanks for asking on this tall and sleek Threshold Bookcase! As its intended design and use, we’d suggest utilizing the backing of this bookcase. Happy shopping! -Erinn

Q: Is the bookcase in a large carton? Will I need two people to pick up this bookcase carton?

submitted by londie - 7 years ago
  • A: Very heavy, definitely requires two people to lift the box.

submitted bySparklesa - 4 years ago
  • A: It is boxed in a carton and it would be difficult for one person to carry without a dolly of some kind. It’s manageable with two.

submitted byDoug - 7 years ago
  • A: Hi londie - Thanks for asking about this popular bookcase. This is a pretty large box. Its shipped in a box about 74.5 inches length x 16.0 inches width x 6.75 inches height. The box also weighs roughly 64.5 pounds. Hope this information is helpful! - Melissa

Q: how difficult is it to put this together?

submitted by lorraine from gates - 7 years ago
  • A: It wasn’t very difficult, but it did take longer than expected. It took us (two people) about two hours to put together, and then another 30 minutes to figure out how to install the anti-tip strap to the wall. That step requires a power drill to make a hole in the wall. Everything else is easy with a Phillips screwdriver. Screwing in the cardboard piece to the back of the unit took close to an hour as there aren’t pre-drilled holes for that step and it uses 46 screws. Directions were clear and easy to follow though, parts are all well labeled and the hardware is packaged in multiple little pouches so it’s easy to find what you need for each step.

submitted bySparklesa - 4 years ago
  • A: I have two of these that I put together by myself and didn't have any problems. The hardest part for me was attaching the back just because there aren't pre drilled holes around the sides of the frame. The instructions are clear, I didn't have any trouble following them or have missing pieces or anything like that.

    submitted byKelly R - 7 years ago
  • A: Hi Lorraine from gates – Thanks for asking! If you scroll down on the page the manufacture has the assembly instructions you can view. It does take adult assembly. I hope this helps. – Anita

Q: When fully assembled is it very sturdy or does it have some wobble too it? I will be storing many books and need something that can handle the weight

submitted by Kurt R - 7 years ago
  • A: Hi Kurt R – Thanks for asking! This book case has a maximum shelf weight capacity of 65.0 pounds. I hope this will hold all of your books. Thanks for stopping by. - Anita

  • A: I have had this bookshelf for YEARS and is still as sturdy today as it was when I purchased it and first put it together. It has made it through 3 moves and 4 of the 5 shelves have been filled with NURSING TEXTBOOKS (heavy!!)

    submitted byNicole J - 7 years ago
  • A: The bookcase comes with brackets to secure the bookcase to the wall.

submitted bySadie Jean - 7 years ago

Q: Is the color of this bookcase a dark brown or a black? (it says espresso)

submitted by MC - 7 years ago
  • A: The color is not consistent for the espresso version from batch to batch. Some have a red tone and others are more of a brown black. If you are set on a specifng tone I would check before buying.

submitted byTwo Tone Sad Time - 3 years ago
  • A: Hello MC- We’re glad you stopped by to checkout this modern bookcase from Threshold! The bookcase color-espresso is more so a beautiful dark brown. We hope this helps! -Erinn

submitted byHeidi - 7 years ago

Q: It's solid wood? What type of wood i.e. what type of tree is it from? Thank you.

submitted by Marbo - 7 years ago
  • A: Hi Marbo - We think this bookcase is a great place to store or display your things! It's made of pine hardwood with a melamine surface, and the backing is MDF. Hope it works well for you. - Shelly

submitted byShelly - 7 years ago
    Target staff support
  • A: The shelves are MDF and the load bearing corners are wood. The sides are made of the same thin cardboard that is used for the backing.

submitted byJulsey - 4 years ago
  • A: I do not think it is wood at all. it is very light and it is very wobbly when you finish putting it together.

    submitted byEnlucas08 - 7 years ago

Q: How much assembly is required? Thanks.

submitted by d - 8 years ago
  • A: Assembly was easy and the directions were very well labeled and clear but it did take about 2 hours. I guess we are beginners at the pre-fab furniture game!

submitted bySparklesa - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi d - Thanks for checking on this classic bookcase! We've included assembly instructions toward the bottom of the page for you to check out. We hope this helps! - Stephanie

submitted byStephanie - 7 years ago
    Target staff support
  • A: The bookshelves come completely unassembled. If you have a little experience putting together pre-fab furniture, these are not difficult to put together. If you don't have any experience, you might need some help- the instructions aren't fantastic for a beginner. I have a lot of experience and it still took me about 45 minutes to put together each unit.

submitted byvgclairisch - 7 years ago

Q: I see that three of the five shelves are adjustable, do you know which three? Does it include the bottom shelf? Also, are the holes and pegs on the sides or at the back?

submitted by targetcustomer1 - 8 years ago
  • A: Is the a way that I can adjust the shelves so i can get 4 shelves 12.5+"for lp.s. Any x-space does not matter. I'd like to order 2 today.

submitted byDon - 4 years ago
  • A: The holes for the pegs are in the front and back of the shelf near the sides. The 3 movable shelves are the top, the 3rd from the top and 4th from the top.

submitted byCasey - 8 years ago
  • A: The fixed shelves are the bottom and the middle ones. The peg holes are in the sides.

submitted bybob - 8 years ago

Q: Do the legs curve out a bit or are they perfectly straight? I want to put several together and fit onto one wall.

submitted by EJ - 8 years ago
  • A: They are straight on the outside. The curve you see in the picture is from the inner cut. We have our 4 shelves lined along the wall side-by-side and they are perfectly flush.

submitted bymelanieml - 8 years ago
  • A: If they curve at all, it is just a little. If you're putting them side by side, you may have to sand a bit, but not much at all.

submitted byKB - 8 years ago
  • A: The legs are straight. You could place multiple bookcases together.

Really loved 3 of the 4 of these I purchased. The very 1st one came with Styrofoam so crumbled and the unit cracked that I was quite worried. The material and structure of this one assembled differently than the other 3 packages. Packages 2, 3, and 4 were packaged so we'll, not broken or cracked. The hardware was also packaged differently. I've read reviews with some saying people have bought these prior and the quality is different. I'm wholly guessing these 2 styles were an old/new style and am so grateful to have 3 of the better looking ones. The shelf hardware has padded plat sections so the shelves stay put which is nice. Put these 4 together in about 2 hours with 2 people. Also the 3 better ones have more of a wood texture as compared to the other (pic included).

Easy to buy, delivered quickly, easy to put together but takes some time. Perhaps 20 minutes, if you have a drill. I didn't and added more time for assembly. Great wood color, holds a lot, and they stand firm. About to buy a third.

Nice shelves

These are attractive with ample storage room and can tolerate a decent amount of weight on each shelf. The three adjustable shelves will allow you to accommodate taller books and picture frames. I’ve put four of this model together in the past couple months. The diagrams are not always clear, but if you make a mistake, you will figure it out quickly because the next step will not work. I consider this item a good value if you don’t need solid wood.

No cam cover or predrilled holes on back

FrugalBugle - 3 months ago
There weren't any covers for the large cams, so you can see the large silver circles. The back doesn't have pre-drilled holes for installing the back panels. The legs are too wobbly for carpet. This is better suited for hardwood floors. We got this as a present and can’t return it. Will be buying something else that looks nicer and is better suited for carpeting.

Not formaldehyde free (cancer linked)

I was looking in the details of the page if this was formaldehyde free and it was not mentioned. I feel as the years pass this companies hide this crucial information. To my surprise once I opened the box the first panel has a warning label. It it infuriating for so many reasons. One of them being that I live in a two story home and carried the heavy package. Inspected the package before I even carried it upstairs. Just to find out it’s not formaldehyde free once I unpack and open it.

Super Disappointed

Bought the horizontal bookshelf 6yrs ago and the skinny bookshelf 6 months ago. The quality was mostly the same and the finishes exactly the same, so when this bookshelf finally restocked, I jumped on it. Bad move. The quality is atrocious and the facing “wood” is streaky and does match the other two. Would exchange but I’m certain I’d get the same quality and finish issues, really a shame. I would have waited longer if the manufacturer needed more time to restock with the original materials they’d been using for years, but they copped out instead.

Feedback on Bookshelf Design: Back Panel Attachment Issue

4 out of 5 stars
Thumbs down graphic, would not recommend
QueenJ - 6 months ago, Verified purchaser
I like the bookshelf, but I think the method for attaching the back panel is excessive—45 screws with only 4 pre-drilled holes is quite cumbersome. For the price, I believe more pre-drilled holes or an alternative method for securing the back panel would be appropriate. I suggest revisiting the design.

Great for the price, this was really easy to put together. It took me less than an hour with several interruptions from my children. I'm excited to organize my office space and I'm considering a decorative peel and stick wallpaper for the backing.

I have three of these in espresso and one in black and those are all fine. Something about the white ones isn’t. It arrived damaged and unusable. Then when I tried to process a return, the app wanted me to take it somewhere and drop it off. It weighs 70 pounds and is too big for my car! I had to call customer service to deal with it and instead of having FedEx pick up the bookcase they damaged I now have to dispose of it myself which means paying someone to haul it away. I’m feeling incredibly salty about this whole experience and Target’s customer service is terrible.

Cheap materials. No where near the quality of the three-shelf, two-shelf and horizontal bookshelf in this style back in 2016. The backing was just barely wider than the opening that it was impossible to line it up and make sure the screws went into the side. I had to use my drill for pilot holes. I thought once it was up with the shelves it would be sturdier. Not really. Very disappointed. Wish I hadn't wasted my money.

I purchased 3 of these bookshelves clearances out for $35 each 7 years ago and have used them since. I needed a 4th and waited for them to come back in stock. At a whopping $180 these “new” bookshelves are no longer real wood. They look very similar to the old ones but the price tag IS NOT WORTH IT.
