Q: How many times has this been processed?

submitted by Toocoolchix - 19 days ago
  • A: Hi there! Great question — our Organic Mulch goes through a single natural aging and processing cycle. It’s made from aged wood fines of mesquite, ash, elm, and oak, and is minimally processed to preserve its organic integrity. It is not heat-treated, pasteurized, or chemically processed. This approach helps maintain the natural nutrients and microbial life in the mulch. If you have any other questions or need more details, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com or call us at 510-922-9758 — we're always happy to help!

Q: Should I put anything under the mulch on top of the dirt before the mulch around tomato plants

submitted by Angiec - 2 months ago
  • A: Hi Angiec! Great question! Before applying our Organic Premium Mulch around your tomato plants, it's usually a good idea to remove any weeds and, if you'd like, you can lay down a layer of compost or newspaper/cardboard to help with weed suppression and moisture retention. However, it's not required — you can apply the mulch directly on top of the soil as well. If you have any other questions or need more tips, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com — we’re happy to help!

Q: Is elm tree disease possible when using this mulch?

submitted by Sarah - 2 months ago
  • A: Hi Sarah! Great question! Dutch Elm Disease is primarily spread by bark beetles, and while our mulch isn't heat-treated like our blended soils, the chances of it carrying viable beetles that could transmit the fungus are extremely low. We always recommend checking with your local arborist if you have high-risk elm trees nearby, but overall, using this mulch should pose virtually no risk. 🌱 If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us anytime at contact@backtotheroots.com — we're always happy to help!

Q: Is there a danger of splinters from this mulch?

submitted by Fogcityite - 3 months ago
  • A: Thanks for your question! Our mulch is designed to be safe for use in gardens and around the home. Since it’s made from natural wood, we always recommend handling it with care—especially when spreading it by hand. While the risk of splinters is minimal, wearing gardening gloves can offer extra protection. Q: Hi, what type of wood is used to make this mulch? Also, what is the natural brown color made from?

submitted by Stacy - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi Stacy! Our Organic Mulch is made primarily from Mesquite, Elm, Ash, and Oak. Since we don’t use any synthetic dyes or colorants, the mulch’s natural color can vary slightly from bag to bag depending on the specific mix of woods and how long it has aged. What you're seeing is simply the natural color of the wood—nothing added, just how nature made it! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us at contact@backtotheroots.com.

Hi there! Thank you for your feedback—we're sorry to hear our Organic Premium Mulch didn’t meet your expectations. Our mulch is made from natural, organic materials and is designed to break down over time to help enrich the soil. Because it's finely ground, it may look more like compost or soil than traditional bark mulch—but it should still provide the same weed suppression and moisture retention benefits. That said, we’d love to take a closer look and make sure everything is as it should be. If you can, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of the mulch and both the front and back of the bag. Our team will be happy to investigate further and make things right if needed. Thanks again for sharing your experience—and for growing with us!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Super happy with this free product! It was the exact same color mulch we used this year so I was able to use it to touch up certain spot in my garden that needed a little extra love. It matched perfect and was super easy to spread. The bag made storage easy when I was done.

The price went from $3.99 to $7.99. That’s nonsense! Won’t be buying anymore no matter how much I like the mulch, will happily go without because your prices are ridiculous now.

    Shredded wood, not really mulch/chips/nuggets

    3 out of 5 stars
Steph T - 3 months ago, Verified purchaser
I like that this product is supposed to be organic. I recently used some dyed mulch in my yard and am now worried about the dye from this other product leaching into the soil. This product gives me a little peace of mind around my vegetable garden. However, the texture of it was all just shredded wood. No bark nuggets, chips, or what I consider to be actual mulch. This was all shredded bits (some very large) and just not the texture or consistency I was expecting. It is also a little on the pricier side since this is a 1cuft bag.

It's hard to find an affordable organic mulch, so I was happy to see this pop up on the shelves. Now, while I know insects are inevitable in gardening, nothing prepared me for opening this bag. Fungus gnats all up on my face, crawling around through the wood. I understand, I UNDERSTAND fungus gnats happen, EVENTUALLY, especially when working with products containing organic matter, but I don't need them flying out at me the second I open the bag. Maybe this wouldn't be my experience with a second bag, but I honestly don't know if I'm willing to take the chance.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Organic Premium mulch looks good and works very well, it retains moisture and prevents weeds from growing and it adds a rich brown color to your garden. I like that there’s not a strong Odor at all like others. The main problem was the weeds popping out in the rocks in my front yard in an area of flowers and bushes and this product stopped that from happening giving the plants more time to be hydrated too.

It’s a very good way to decorate and at the same time prevents those little unwanted grass to peak out. The bag comes with a great amount to mulch and it’s not too heavy to carry which is a plus! In my opinion it didn’t smell too strong; it’s like soil. Great for those places where you want your plants to be the protagonists and prevent unwanted grass.
