Q: I'm repotting a lot of houseplants, would the regular potting soil or houseplant potting soil be better. The regular comes in a larger bag but is it better to get the houseplant specific bag?

submitted by Katie - 1 year ago
  • A: I recommend the potting soil. I’m doing outside work too and thought I could sneak by with top soil. I did use the potting soil last year and preferred it for pots.

submitted byElizabeth - 11 months ago
  • A: Is this well draining soil?

submitted byHannah - 1 month ago
  • A: Hi Katie! We recommend using which soil would work for each specific plant since different plants have different needs. If you have any questions or would like further help deciding, please reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com.

Q: Hi. Is this soil good for strawberries and peppers?

submitted by Chy - 24 days ago
  • A: Hi Chy! Yes, our Organic All-Purpose Potting Mix is a good choice for both strawberries and peppers. It has a neutral pH, which works well for most plants, including these two. Strawberries generally prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–6.5), and peppers do well in a pH range of 6.0–7.0, so this mix provides a solid base. Just be sure to provide plenty of sunlight and consistent watering for best results!

GNATS

1 out of 5 stars
Thumbs down graphic, would not recommend
Kii - 14 days ago, Verified purchaser
I bought this months ago for my plants and it has led to months of battling gnats. This soil comes with them. Even sealed away in a container away from everything, gnats kept coming from the soil and living in it. I had done so many treatments before finally deciding to dispose of ALL of this soil, including what I had already used for my plants. This is not worth it at all.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 13 days ago
Hi Kii! Thank you for your feedback, and we're truly sorry to hear about your experience. We understand how frustrating fungus gnats can be, and we want to help clarify and support you through this. Fungus gnats are a common challenge that can occur with any soil—especially organic mixes—because they thrive in moist environments and are naturally attracted to the rich organic matter used in many potting blends. These pests can also be introduced through surrounding plants, containers, or even through open windows and reused tools. However, we take concerns like yours very seriously and want to make things right. To better understand your experience and investigate further, we’d appreciate it if you could email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with the following: Details about your plant care routine (e.g., watering frequency, drainage, indoor/outdoor placement) Photos of the front and back of the soil bag Photos of the affected plants and soil Whether you noticed the gnats before using the soil or only after Your input will help us continue improving and ensure the best quality possible for all our growers. We truly value your feedback and are here to support you.

Regardless of what state I order this in, there are always little flies and bugs in it. Don't leave it in your car for any length of time lol
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 16 days ago
Hi Cas! Thanks for sharing your experience — we’re really sorry to hear about the bugs you’ve noticed. What you’re describing sounds like fungus gnats, which are a common (but frustrating!) issue with any organic soil, especially when it's exposed to warmth or moisture for extended periods — like in a car. These little guys are harmless to people but can be annoying around plants. That said, we never want you to have a frustrating experience with our soil, and we’re always here to help. Could you reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com with more details, like where you purchased the soil and photos of the front and back of the bag? We’d love to look into it further and help make it right. Thanks again for your feedback — it helps us improve and support our community better. Warmly, The Back to the Roots Team

Killed my babies!

Larisa - 19 days ago, Verified purchaser
My husband picked up this soil for me to repot my plants, 6 of them. I have always used Miracle Gro but didn't want to hurt his feelings so I gave it a go. After 2 days, all of my babies were dying - leaves drooping and turning yellow. I re-potted again but with Miracle Gro. Literally only a couple hours later they were ALL looking better. This soil is awful! Texture is similar to mulch. When I pulled my babies out, the top soil in the pots was dry and crumbly but the bottom half was soaking and like mud. It was killing my babies. Do not buy!! Do not use!! Hurt your hubby's feelings if you have to.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 16 days ago
Hi Larisa! We’re so sorry to hear about your experience — we know how much your plants mean to you, and we never want our soil to cause you or your plant babies any stress. Do not buy this soil! After repotting multiple indoor house plants I now have a hoard of flies that have infested my apartment and I cannot get them out. The attached photo is two of eight fly stickers less than 24 hours. I don't have fruit or anything that would attract these flies and did not have a problem before using this soil and thr flies are only around the plants I repotted.

1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 1 month ago
Hi J! We’re really sorry to hear that your flowers didn’t thrive — we know how disappointing that can be. Our organic potting mix is crafted with natural, living ingredients and no synthetic chemicals, which can sometimes behave a bit differently than conventional soils like Miracle-Gro. Organic soils often require a slightly different care approach, especially when it comes to watering, feeding, and drainage. We’d love the opportunity to help troubleshoot and understand what might have gone wrong. When you have a moment, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with a few photos of the soil and your plants, along with some details about your care routine (watering frequency, location, type of plants, etc.). Hi there! We’re really sorry to hear about the fungus gnats and understand how frustrating that must be. Fungus gnats can sometimes be associated with organic soils because they contain natural, composted ingredients that occasionally attract these pests. However, they definitely shouldn’t be present in large numbers when the bag arrives or before it’s opened. To help us investigate, could you please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with clear photos of the full front and back of the bag? This will help our quality control team review the batch. 1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 1 month ago
Hi Mike W! Thanks for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about the fungus gnats and understand how frustrating an infestation can be. Because our potting mix uses aged wood fines to improve aeration and drainage, you might notice some chunkier texture compared to other soils. This natural ingredient helps support long-term soil health by encouraging healthy root growth and preventing compaction. Fungus gnats can sometimes appear in organic soils since they’re made with natural materials, but they shouldn’t be present in large numbers when you first open the bag. To help us investigate, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with: Clear photos of the soil Photos of the full front and back of the bag Details about your care routine Whether you noticed the gnats before or after using the soil We’re happy to troubleshoot with you and send a replacement if needed. Hi Jason48238! We’re sorry to hear about the ongoing issue with fungus gnats — we understand how frustrating this can be. Fungus gnats are a common challenge with organic potting mixes because they contain natural, composted ingredients that can sometimes attract these pests. Fungus gnats I wish I’d never bought this soil
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 1 month ago
Hi Suzyq! We’re really sorry to hear about your experience—and totally understand how frustrating fungus gnats can be. Fungus gnats are a common issue with all indoor soils, especially organic ones, because they thrive in moist, nutrient-rich environments. The good news is that they don’t harm your plants, and there are safe, natural ways to control them—like letting the top layer of soil dry out between waterings or using sticky traps or neem oil. We’d love to look into this further to make sure everything about your bag was up to our standards. If you’re open to it, could you send us a photo of the front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? That will help us investigate and support you more directly. Awful experience, both bags I got ended up having fungal fly eggs and about 1-2 days after potting, my plants were INFESTED. One of my plants of 5 years is suffering due to the infestation, and I’m so bummed. I am having a really hard time treating the soil and getting rid of them because there are soooo many. Poor quality soil overall.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 2 months ago
Hi Gina, we’re so sorry to hear about your experience—that’s incredibly frustrating, especially when it impacts a plant you’ve cared for for years. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Fungus gnats can sometimes appear in organic potting soils, as they’re naturally attracted to warm, moist environments and can hatch from dormant eggs that exist in many organic materials. While they don’t harm plants directly, they’re definitely a nuisance and can be difficult to manage once they’re active indoors. We’d love to take a closer look at what happened and help however we can. Could you please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of the front and back of the soil bags? Our team can help identify the issue and offer some treatment tips—and of course, we’re happy to make this right. Thanks again for reaching out. We’re here to support you and your plants!
