I am going on 8 years with mine. I love it!!! It does require a bit of patience. You have to have the settings just right. Per type of bean, if its fresh roasted, what company, the region it came from. You can buy the same coffee but if is a different bag you have to "recallibrate" the machine. f/e Check the grind amount, the coarseness, the tamping. If you want a machine that is just press and go this is not the machine for you! This takes coffee making to a whole other level. Make sure you clean your machine when it tells you. And clean out the hopper every now and again. It keeps the beans from clogging the machine. I use canned air to blow it out. And a mini computer keyboard vaccum.

This machine is very hard to dial in, Bitter tasting and the support line kept sending me beans and then blamed them for the poor results. There are much better machines out there, do your research.

I had my Barista Express 870 from 02/2016 until 05/2025. I waited that long to write a review to really use it and test out longevity of it. I used it daily several times throughout these 9 years and it always performed and did a great job. I swapped it out eventually after a transitory blew on the PCB board and I didn't feel like getting it replaced. I doubt other machines from other manufacturers actually last that long.
Inconsistent

This is a very inconsistent machine. I can pull a shot with zero issues, pull a second and get half of what I should. I have reprogrammed it about every two weeks since Christmas. It has been cleaned and descaled. It’s very frustrating. Other than that issue, it is generally easy to use and we have enjoyed using it. We would recommend it but it takes patience.

I’ve had my machine for 10 years. Works pretty well for being that old. Grinder nob fell off and kind of produces more than needed even on low setting after replacing it. But overall great product. Looking to maybe upgrade to a newer version.

My son and friend have the same machine, I have to clean the machine more than they do combined. I have warranty work done because it stopped extraction, but no one can tell me what was fix or replaced. Now the grinder stops working. Their solution is to change the burr settings drastically so the extraction has changed requiring me to change grind amount and time of extraction. I have been using the same bean since I got it, the same ones my son and friend use. Breville excuse? Do a descale and the light turns off, all good! NO! My frequency is more than two others combined! The machine not grinding was blamed on the beans…..the same ones I have been using .

This is definitely great for beginners who want to get into espressos, however, I do wish Breville/Sage would integrate a more consistent grinder into this setup, especially now they own the Baratza brand which makes great burr grinders for a similar price range. The only draw back for this machine would be the lack of a better grinder.

For nine years (and counting!) it's been the quiet hero of our kitchen, delivering over 7,000 cups of flawless coffee without a single breakdown. No maintenance headaches, no drama—just perfect espressos, lattes and cappuccinos, every single day. We love it so much, we got a second one for guest space — because once you’ve had coffee this good, there’s no going back. ☕❤️

I received the Breville Barista Express as a Christmas gift. Although there was a learning curve for dialing in the beans, I can now say I enjoy a great coffee every morning and afternoon. In fact, I recently stopped at a coffee shop I frequented often, and much to my surprise I make a better cappuccino! Now, my latte art needs a lot of work, but in time I hope to master that as well.

I bought this machine a little over a month ago & have yet to get a consistent espresso. I've changed all the settings & tried so many things. One day I can get a perfect double shot of espresso- the next day... junk- without touching the settings. Pretty finicky machine unfortunately.

Severe design flaw

I really enjoyed the machine, that is until it become nothing more than a very large, heavy, paperweight. It has a severe design flaw that many users have encountered and replacing the gasket won't fix it. There are 5 screws that commonly get lose and are impossible to access without spending hours disassembling the unit. If the screws were easily accessible, it would be a quick fix and I wouldn't be having hot water sputtering and spewing all over the place. I really did enjoy the Barista Express while it worked, but it is so frustrating knowing that the problem is so simple and yet so inaccessible. If Youtube is any indication, it is a very common problem. Only trust reviews where the customer has had the espresso maker for a few years and not just a few months.

You be the judge from this photo. 2 years is about the life of the water dispenser before it bubbles and teflon preps off leaching into the coffee.

This is my first espresso machine and I couldn't be happier. I appreciate the integrated grinder, and once I got my settings dialed in, every pull is consistent and excellent! I look forward to many delicious beverages for years to come! I also appreciated all of the guidance and how-to videos included on Breville's website.

It took probably two months of twice-daily pulls to find the proper grind and correct tamping pressure to make the espresso I like. I have been happy enough with most of the results but there were plenty of shots that I had to toss. I looked at a lot of online videos and learned a lot. I was surprised that some of the online videos failed to mention that the group head has to be rinsed after every use. (This is a must.) Overall, I am very happy with the Barista Express but I wonder what I will do if it breaks down. I have had it for nearly a year now.

Can not recommend this machine. Does not make good expresso, dosage is incorrect. Wand never acts correctly. Have watched the many you tube demos, mine never has the same results?

Best Budget Espresso Machine (or the Bambino)
4 out of 5 stars

I bought this 11 years ago. They are rated to last 10 years, but mine lasted 11. This machine or the Bambino are the best budget machine you can get. I didn't replace it, because I wanted to graduate to pressure profiling with a Flair Pro 2. My Barista Express will not longer make espresso, but I still use it for steaming, hot water, and the grinder. If I were to do this again, I would get the Bambino.
