Q: What is the difference between the elvie curve and the elvie catch?

submitted by Vee Bazanos - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Vee! The Elvie Curve is a wearable, silicone breast pump that uses natural suction for low-effort expression, and is helpful to wear while feeding or pumping on mom's other breast to catch the let down. Q: First time mom: Do I need to buy two manual Elvie or just one? What bags should I buy?

submitted by Jenna - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Jenna! Elvie Curve is great to gently collect the letdown while feeding or pumping from the other breast so only one is necessary, but you can absolutely use one on each breast as well. The Elvie Curve comes with 1 Frame and 1 Pouch, both of which are made with BPA-free, food grade silicone that is dishwasher safe.

Only 2 weeks in, but I have found having 2 of these (they are sold as singles) for going back to work/being away from home are a great compliment to my Spectra 2 pump at home. I keep finding myself using them more and more in place of the Spectra (though def still need that for more complete pumping sessions) while I do chores at home and haven't noticed a drop in production. Or if I'm out and about and lose track of time they are an easy relief/save milk from being wasted. They gently pump and relieve when a letdown is needed, and have stayed secure in multiple different nursing bras. Not super spill prone or hard to finagle (I had a bit of trouble with the manual pumping, drips, and top heaviness with the Medela manual pump while I waited for these in the mail) h Haven't had trouble with production but, wow they seem to catch a lot of milk while baby feeds off other side, so these are a great easy way to capture and store more milk, in many ways! Easier way to pump at work (not as intensive as battery/plug in options, but so far so good). I've been using them once a a shift, or twice for longer shifts(but am able to keep them sealed in a cooler bag in the freezer to not have to wash in between). Easy to wear them during computer tasks. Fairly discreet, as they blend okay under baggier or thicker clothes (even slightly loose sweatshirts disguise them well, though I'm only a B to C cup to begin with). Nice there is no movment is needed other than maybe lightly pressing to ensure suction every few minutes, which isn't required but I try to do it to avoid tempting fate with big leaks. But I haven't noticed any leaks so far, just super slight splashing if they are getting full! Easy to clean (only 2 pieces), and pour very accurately into bags, love how they lay flat on the counter while I mess with other stuff like opening bags, etc. A great investment, though maybe get the actual battery powered pumps if you need stronger pumping/more results?? I'm Curious to try that, but I'm very satisfied to stick with these because they are much more affordable.

At 3 months my son is kicking off my haakaa on the regular. Popping this into my bra on the side he isn’t nursing from works great! Less suction than the hakaa so can be less output however this is easier to adjust than the haakaa when it does lose suction, just push in the bottom section. It also works well if baby has slept longer than expected at night and I need to relieve some pressure before feeding, so he can latch correctly. I can wear it around the house for a few minutes, pick him up and change him, and then I have an ounce or two already before breast feeding. Recommend dapple or Medela wipes for cleaning, they dry quicker and help get into the corners. Rinsing and scrubbing with a bottle brush is possible but seems to take forever to dry and doesn’t get into the corners as well.

Elvie curve

I tried the Elvie curve for the first time today and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. I kept it on while and after I pumped on one side. The amount I expressed was minimal, but all milk counts. I own the regular Elvie breast pumps and I love them. So versatile and adaptable. The Elvie curve is more compact and is very comfortable when on. I forgot I had it on. There was no spillage as mentioned in the other reviews. Packaging was great and customer was impeccable. The customer service will keep me coming back.

Lifesaver

5 out of 5 stars

Amy - 2 months ago
Three days after my son was born I was producing enough milk to feed a set of twins. The pain was unbearable, so while my son nursed on one side, I would hook up my electric breast pump to the other side, and fumble around trying to hold him with one hand, hold the pump with the other hand, deal with the pump tubes and removing it to burp my son frequently. It was such a pain. Milk was rushing out like a river and while I was trying not to drown my son and get milk everywhere, my husband would wake up in the middle of the night to help me. The worse was when I had to take my son on the road and feed him in the car. I had to express the other breast into a cup to relieve the pressure. The Elvie is a lifesaver and well worth the extra cost for me! When baby starts fussing, I slip it into my bra on the non-nursing side, pick him up and go! It provides enough suction to relieve the pressure and eliminate the foremilk, leaving the fat-enriched hindmilk for my baby to feed on should he empty the first breast. And the best part is it's compact enough to throw in a purse or diaper bag in case of an emergency.

Easy way to collect milk while my child is feeding from the opposite breast. Suction doesn't last forever, but long enough to collect the milk that would other wise be wasted in the breast pad or bra.

I got this when my first was around 4-5 mos and didn’t use it regularly. Just had my second and I have been wearing it 2x/day on the non-nursing side since my milk came in. About to freeze 5+ 4oz bottles for her and she’s only a week old! Re-up the suction every 3-5 minutes and it works great.

I'm all for the new trend of in-bra milk collection. This is a silent, easy option. Great because it won't get kicked like other products. Con: I wish there was an easier way to pour the milk out. Note only 1 pump comes with the purchase (I just bought a second for silent pumping option at work).

Less suction than Haakka, so it didn’t collect as much milk. Three stars because it is nice that you can wear it in your bra and be more hands free compared to worrying about haakka falling off. But overall, I haven’t reached for it over haakka.

Prefer over haakaa for use while nursing

If you are expecting an actual pump this really isn’t it. But it is great at catching let down on one side while nursing on the other. It is similar to a haakaa but you can put it in your bra/tank. I had the haakaa fall off one too many times spilling milk all over me and the bed. There are other good uses for the haakaa, it can get a little stronger suction, but this one is way easier/less stressful for collecting milk while nursing.

Liquid gold saver

I purchased this on a whim in store while pregnant and didn't have any high hopes for how well it would work or how much I'd use it... I'm a first time mom and was just looking for good ways to not have any waste. Well I'm currently 7weeks postpartum and have been breastfeeding 80/20 and this has been a liquid gold saver! I put on the opposite side when nursing and always catch 2-6oz (after 3oz - take off, pour and put on again to get more) then that goes in a bottle in the fridge for dad to feed later or in the freezer to stock up. 100% a necessity! Just wish it was a little bigger so I didn't have to take off and pour after 3oz, but definitely not a make it or break it for the product

Does not maintain good suction and collects maybe half what the original Haakaa does but costs nearly two times as much. The only positive is that it’s shape allows it to sit inside my nursing bra and baby can’t kick it off easily while nursing on the other side, but since it tends to lose suction many times during a session, baby’s feet are definitely not the biggest issue.

At first it seemed like it wasn’t doing anything. I was frustrated and wanted to return it after seeing others had the same issue. I use it at the same time as my elvie hands free electric pump. I found it is best to massage your breast before use. After about 10 minutes I had 2.5 oz. So it is a bit slower than the electric but it does work. Massage your breast position and suction it on every 5 minutes I’d release and reduction to maintain a good suction pressure. I’m glad I did not give up and I urge others to not give up right away and see what works best for you with it.

Absolutely love it! Milk is precious and if you are a just enougher like me you can’t waste milk so I just slip this in my bra on the other side while I’m nursing when I know I’m going to have a let down and it collects all the goods. Suction isn’t the strongest but I find it to be perfect to keep the milk flowing after a let down. I can collect 1-2 ounces during night pump sessions when my breasts are full. I pretty much exclusively breast feed but with this I’ve been able to build a supply of 100 oz now at 3 weeks postpartum.
