Q: Can I mix the 8.0 medium blonde with the 7.0 dark blonde in a bowl? I am concerned 8.0 too light and 7.0 too dark.

submitted by pamelafs - 3 years ago
  • A: Your response! Really? "It makes no sense to even consider..." you say. Quite an opinionated and judgmental sentence to answer with as a professional representing Garnier. How about saying instead: "Best to try out one or both of colors you're considering so you know whether one is too light, or one is too dark since we do not recommend mixing of colors as it is hard to predict the results and even harder to replicate the results each time you color."

submitted bypamelafs - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there Pamelafs! We are not fans of mixing colors. Its hard to predict the results and even harder to replicate the results each time you color. It makes no sense to even consider mixing until you have used the 2 colors you're considering, otherwise, how do you know if one is too light and one is too dark.

  • A: After your response to me on my question to you, I had to research one of your competitors who answered that exact same question I inquired of their 2 very similar dark and medium blonde colors. Their answer was: Yes, you can most certainly mix the two colors together to get a color that is best suited to your color desire. And that many of their customers did just that. And so.....I used their color instead and I was very happy with the results. If your OLIA ever changes its stance on their answer please let me know. I am aware that your hair formula is very nourishing, silky and gentle for the hair. Thank you. :

Q: I just dyed my hair medium neutral brown and it has a redish tint to it and too light. I want slightly darker than this and with no red tones. Should I try dark brown? or is that almost black?

Q: My hair is dark brown w/grown-out old coloring that is light brown & I want to use one of the pink/rose quartz dyes. Garnier reps say that it's meant for undyed hair & that "special considerations" must be made for dyed hair. What product can I use?

submitted by LadyDianePoet - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi there! The Garnier Olia Bolds 7.20 Dark Rose Quartz is formulated to work on natural medium brown or lighter hair. Since your hair is dark brown there would be no noticeable change in your hair color. You would have to bleach your hair to a blonde shade and then apply the color. The product states not recommended on highlighted or bleached hair due to the intense color result that will be achieved. If you don't mind a more intense color than shown on the box, then bleach your hair first and apply the Garnier Olia 7.20 shade. Only bleach your hair if you feel your hair is in good condition before additional processing. Thank you!

Q: Is Olia permanent hair color hydrogen peroxide free? It says amonia free, but that does not necesarily mean peroxide free. Please advise as I can not use a hair color that contis hdroxogen peroxide

submitted by Twin - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Twin, Thanks for reaching out! Olia Hair Color is Ammonia-Free, however it is formulated with Peroxide. Our hair color is an oil powered permanent hair color. We thank you for your interest in Garnier!

Q: Which color is darker the darkest brown 3.0 or the darkest platinum brown 3.11?

submitted by Marie - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi there Marie! Both colors are darkest browns so one is not darker or lighter than the other. The Olia shade 3.0, "Darkest Brown," is the natural version of the darkest of the brown shades and provides 100% gray coverage. It is best for anyone with natural hair between light brown and black. The Olia shade 3.11, "Darkest Platinum Brown," is the darkest of the brown shades with the addition of strong, ashy reflects for an intensely cool shade with a platinum, metallic-like shine. It also provides 100% gray coverage and is best for anyone with natural hair between light brown and black.

Q: Is medium brown darker or lighter than medium neutral brown?

submitted by CAM - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there CAM! Actually, the medium brown 5.0 and medium neutral brown 5.03 are both medium brown colors so one is not any darker than the other. The medium brown 5.0 is the natural version of a medium brown and the medium neutral brown 5.03 has a slightly “cool” undertone and is a best choice for hair that tends to end up with unwanted reddish tones when dyed.

Q: Hi I have very light hair, a level 10 or 11 my natural hair color is really dark black. It naturally is a level 1 or 2. I was wondering if the shade 1.0 would help me get back to that? Also how long would it last?

submitted by Ally - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there Ally! You can get back to all one dark color, however, going darker over highlighted/ bleached hair is tricky. To avoid odd discolored results on the bleached hair you need to custom mix 2 colors together to get a natural looking result. To get a formula you can mix and use at home, call our 800# to speak to one of our haircolor specialists. Our number is 800-442-7643 our hours are from 9 AM to 5:00 PM ET M – F

submitted byGarnier Consumer Care - 3 years ago

  • A: Hi Ally! You would need to fill the hair with red pigment first, then you would have better luck using a black dye. If you use a red toned brown first, then applied a level 1 or 2, you would have a better result. If you use a box dye, follow all directions on the box or in the information packet. If you’re looking for more assistance, our Virtual Beauty Consultants can help make shade recommendations and answer other hair coloring questions. Q: I have dark brown almost black hair naturally. I recently colored my hair with John Frieda foam color dark red. Didn’t show much. Looking to get a wine plum color, but not too too drastic. If I use the dark garnet red, what can I expect?

submitted by Kirmc - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there! The Olia shade 4.62, "Dark Garnet Red" was specially designed with long lasting, deep red color with a hint of burgundy reflects. It is best for anyone with natural hair between light brown and black. (definitely check out the color cue on the side panel of any color you're interested in) Choosing a rich red is a great choice for dark hair like yours, the red tones are more likely to be noticeable against the natural dark hair.

submitted byGarnier Consumer Care - 3 years ago

  • A: Hi Kirmc! We recommend taking a look at the side of the box (can be viewed in product images next to the main product image), to get an idea of what kind a result you will get using this color over different shades of hair. We also recommend following the instructions included in the box. Q: can i use this on black dyed hair

submitted by hi there - 3 years ago
  • A: Hey there! Once the hair has been dyed black, the only colors that can be successfully used on that hair are black dyes. Dyed hair is much harder to lighten than natural hair. No hair dye is strong enough to lighten artificial pigment. To go lighter first you would have to have a salon professional strip out the dark dye first with a bleach lightener made for removing dark hair dye.

Q: how soon can you recolor

submitted by suekow - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there Suekow! While you normally would color the hair again when you have new roots ready for color....if you need to go darker to cover up a color that's too light or too bright or to correct spots you missed last time you can do that as soon as 48 hours after the last coloring. IF you need to go lighter, coloring again will not help. Dyed hair is much harder to lighten than natural hair. No hair dye is strong enough to lighten artificial pigment.

  • A: Excellent question! It's generally suggested to wait at least four weeks between coloring hair. Hope this helps :)

I hit the grays around my hairline first so the product could work long as possible. If you're doing that and still having resistant grays, then call Garnier. Otherwise try that and see if it helps. I think I left it on an extra 5-10 minutes overall — hope that's okay. I have dark brown hair, super excited it took to my dark and my gray.

Hello Samantha0427! Thank you for sharing your experience with our Olia ammonia free haircolor in the 5.0 - Medium Brown. While we love that you get great coverage and color, we are so sorry to hear you also end up with a heavy, oily result. because you have fine hair, and this formula is enriched with plenty of hydrating oils, consider either skipping the after color conditioner or only using it on the drier ends of your hair.

The color came out ok, but I really only dyed my hair in attempt to cover my gray hairs. It only dyed some of it. The dye did make the gray hairs less noticeable, but there’s still a lot that didn’t dye. Not sure if it’s worth buying again.
1 reply from Garnier team - 2 months ago
Hi Girlfromoakl35d, We apologize you were not satisfied with the results you achieved with Olia Hair Color. We know how disappointing it can be to look forward to a new application of color only to find that your results are not what you expected. Gray hair is sometimes resistant to color. For best coverage, begin your application on the grayest areas and leave the product on your gray hair longer. If you have tried the extended timing and still need better gray coverage, we suggest using one shade darker. If your hair is over 50% gray and you have been coloring for a number of years, the amount of gray you now have may have increased over time. If you find that you are not getting the same color results as in previous color applications, you may need to use one shade darker to compensate for the lack of pigment in your hair. If you have any additional questions or would like to speak with one of our haircolor experts directly, please reach back out!

I'm light blonde and always do a touch up every 2 weeks to a month .I can only hope my regular brand will correct this. It's horrible and not me at all. I'm devastated 💔 Its the same shade too 😪. It's like a dark ash blonde !

Absolutely everything wrong with I have virgin hair. I have a melanin disorder where I produce gray hairs at a young age. Tell me why the grays weren’t even touched. All this dye did was burn my scalp and make my hair and body extremely greasy. I’m so livid. I should’ve known when it came off my skin so easily.

I have been using this color for many years and I like that it is oil based and ammonia free hence less damaging. Recently the company has changed formula, after dyeing my hair is extremely greasy and the color comes out easy. I never used to shampoo right after dyeing but now I HAVE to as it leaves a greasy mess of hair. Why would the company change the formula that was working well. I will NOT be buying Olia amd I am confident that Olia will lose many many customers unless they bring back the old formula

I like this color because it doesn’t stink and it’s easy to use. I don’t like how the grays, while colored, are considerably lighter to almost looking gray next to the rest of the hair. It almost defeats the purpose of why I dye my hair. I’ve added a picture to show natural hair vs dyed.

I LOVE Garnier Olia! It feels magnificent. I have been using it for years. The first time I used it, I felt like I was spoiling myself when putting on the black gloves. The product feels luxurious. I love the color. It makes me feel so young. My hair is long (past my waist). I follow the directions for toych-ups and always have enough to cover all of my hair. It never makes my hair feel dried out. It smells nice, feels good, and looks great!

At first, I really liked this product. It covered my greys well, I liked the color and it didn't irritate my scalp, however, I found that the color faded very quickly (like within 2 weeks) from a rich brown to a light reddish brown (very noticeably red). The first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke so I tried it a few more times but ended up with the same results. Very disappointed. Will have to try something else.

I haven’t dyed my hair in 15 years. But I did get a balayage a couple years ago I was ready to cover up. The black worked beautifully. It is very shiny. The only thing is I have like 2-3 gray hairs in the same area. I noticed they were still gray. I thought I missed that area or didn’t leave it on long enough because it was the last place I applied dye, but after reading the reviews maybe the dye doesn’t adhere to gray well. This isn’t a big deal for me. I wanted black hair, which it gave me and the conditioner is amazing as well. I don’t put the conditioner on my roots though because it’s too heavy for my fine hair. It has been a week. I’ve had multiple washes and even got some pool water in my hair and it is still shiny black.

I have been using OLIA for over 10 years every 3-4 weeks. Why did you change the product and the glove size?! The gloves are the least of my complaints, though they are now ridiculously small and thin but the product itself has changed! Why?? Always the most expensive, I expect the best and it is now the worst. Burns my skin and is watery. So disappointing.

alright, so i have pretty dark hair & i get random grays / light browns/ & blondes evenly throughout like a calico, so i historically just box it all black. but i found myself literally avoiding coloring my hair with other brands because the smell & process made me feel sick every time. so i tried this one in dark brown trying to find something a little more subtle.. & i do really love this product for how mellow it is, the process was far far nicer. BUT it did not really cover my "greys" initially it made them kind of a light brown which looked pretty blended comparatively & far better than before i colored it.. but then it all honestly washed out by the first- def by the 2nd time i showered & was back to stray greys way too fast for the money, time, and hope invested.
