About the Book

Rarely has an Evangelical upbringing been depicted with this honest, Superbad-meets-Siddhartha playfulness. Whether or not you've begged God to delay the Rapture (so you could lose your virginity), this story is about you.

Book Synopsis

Rarely has an Evangelical upbringing been depicted with the relentless honesty, wide-ranging empathy, and Superbad-meets-Siddhartha playfulness of USA Today best-seller HELL IS A WORLD WITHOUT YOU. During the time of Pizza Hut buffets, 9/11, and all-night Mario Kart parties, a grieving teenager faces a mortal crossroads: fire-and-brimstone certainty vs. forbidden love. And whether or not you've ever begged God to delay the Rapture (so you could have time to lose your virginity), that kid's story is about you.

The last time I truly had a I-cannot-put-this-book-down-until-l-finish-it experience was in 2010, reading Mockingjay, finishing the Hunger Games trilogy. Hell is a World without You was one of those experiences for me. Growing up in a psudeo-fundamentalist church, I wish more than anything that I could go back and give 13.9 year old me this book. It's funny, it's sweet, it's soul-touching, it's wise (without ever getting annoyingly preachy), and it's kind. This easily became one of my all-time favorite novels, and borders Les Miserables as a portrait of what a Church should strive to be on Earth. I know that it's cliche, but to see myself so clearly reflected in the many characters in the book was both heartbreaking and therapeutic at the same time. That being said, if you didn't grow up in Evangelical pseudo-fundamentalism or beyond, fear not, because the author goes lengths to make sure anyone could understand the context of that world, that time, and those beliefs. If I had to summarize it in a single line, l'd quote the book itself, and tell you that Christians can't make Jesus stop loving you.
