Q: My main living area is on the second floor. There is an open staircase leading downstairs and I was wondering if I need to block the Roomba to keep it from falling down the stairs?

submitted by rtterri - 3 years ago
  • A: It should auto detect

submitted by - 3 years ago
  • A: No need to block your robot or the stairs. All Roombas are equipped with cliff detect sensors and will back away from any drop-off.

Q: Hey Roomba Team, Using Google Home/assistant can I use voice commands to have a Roomba i3+ go directly to one area? For instance "Hey Google, have Roomba clean the kitchen". Or is this feature only available in more expensive models? Thanks, Chris

submitted by Chris - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Chris, Your i3+ is fully compatible with Google for voice commands! i3+ does not include the Imprint® Smart Mapping - Targeted Area Cleaning feature. You may ask Google to have Roomba begin a cleaning mission. But i3+ is not equipped for targeted areas like other models such as j7 and s9.

It does clean well. If you have a fairly large floorplan - say 800 - 1,000 ft it will take HOURS to map the area. After that is done, we've still had problems with the unit going over the perimeter and getting stuck underneath things (like the couch which is outside the perimeter). There is no way to fine edit the map which is bothersome too. Another extremely annoying thing is that once it's stuck - you'll get a message on your phone - but there is not way to restart it - it just says "see app" and blinks red so you have to drag it back to the charger and start over again.

Not so smart robot, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't

I spend more time cleaning and caring for the robot than anything. In fact, I just looked up "how to get Roomba to spot clean" and most links are for how to clean roomba. That says something. (it's not spot cleaning though I'm doing what the minimal manual says to do.) When it works it's great, but I would say it works 30% of the time. Most times it doesn't dock properly or gets stuck, even though we have set up maps. And the interface is not great, nor is the support manual. I'll look for a different robot vac when I can afford it.

I cleaned my iRobot i3 thoroughly after each use. We have small home w Persian rugs and hardwood floors. Now it won't charge after 9 months. I regret purchasing it …not worth 300+ dollars. And there's no place to go for help. It's all online.

I love Roomba it has changed my cleaning life. I like that when I leave for work Roomba goes to work! I'm in an old NYC walk up apartment with fireplaces and lots of dust. Since Roomba my floors are immaculate. One thing is Roomba can get into my bedroom but can't get back out over the Lipton the door. So if it can be improved it would be to have a better step up process.

I have cats and a messy husband. "Dory" has changed my life. I use her at least twice a week, and I'm embarrassed to say she does a better job than I do, mainly because she goes under and behind things where I don't go. I'm surprised at how much dust and hair she's able to pick up. She actually does a very good job of cleaning and I'm mostly using her on carpet. If I use her twice a week, she can do my whole first floor without needing her bin emptied. Her mapping ability is pretty good. Maps are easy to manage on the app. Two drawbacks: lack of washable filters and a slight glitch with the child pet safety lock. When the lock is enabled, I can't use the app to troubleshoot or restart her from the app, and pressing the start button on the vacuum simply gives a message to use the app to solve the problem. This usually occurs if she gets stuck somewhere, which isn't that often. For these two flaws, one star off. One caution: these little guys can get behind doors and push them shut, thus trapping themselves. I've invested in doorstops to solve the problem.

Nice addition - helps with dog fur

I received this vacuum as a gift - my daughter and her children moved back in with us along with her sister. We now have four dogs in the house. This has been fantastic for helping control the amount of dog fur flying around. I love having the schedule I can set. It is a little bit needy as it seems I frequently have to address some issue. So far, the issues have been minor and easily rectified but none the less they have to be addressed. Sometimes it won't empty it's bin by itself or it loses Wi-Fi connection and won't start the schedule. It usually runs out of charge before it's finished and has to recharge but it normally starts back up again on its own. I do not use this vaccum as a replacement to my traditional vacuum but it is definitely a great supplement to keep me from losing my mind with so much dog fur. I would recommend it.

I was skeptical until my daughter bought one for her large farmhouse. My first Roomba, Rhonda, is still working upstairs. When my second Roomba, Rosie, died, I was unhappy because I depended on her to keep my floors clean. The I-robot company was great at that time. They sent me a new one free of charge. Cleo is amazing, a cleaning miracle. I'm again a happy lady!

After 9 months, nearly useless

Worked ok for a while. Purchased in December 2022. Got stuck a lot, but overall decent. Recently, however, it started missing whole swaths of area right in the middle of rooms. No obstacles or anything close. Got the borders ok, but not the middle. So I rebooted. No luck. Tried remapping. Remapping said successful, but no map. Tried again. Failed mapping. So now it doesnt work at all. Customer service checked on the unit remotely and said there were no errors. So, I guess I have an expensive 9 month old paperweight now?

As a IT engineer, I love the technology (idea) around this product. Unfortunately as a customer, there seems to be issues around this product that prevent it from functioning as anticipated. Cons: The setup is not straightforward and difficult to complete, the device malfunctions during operation, the mapping of the rooms are not accurate and do not work as selected. I wish I could rate this product higher, but it has not met my expectations and left me going back to a traditional vacuum that consistently works. The battery life does not last to complete my main floor in one vacuum session and returns home early (although it appears to complete... points back to more need to improvement in this technology) Pros: Love the technology and automation Love the (idea) of mapping rooms and being able to select which room(s) to vacuum, but the execution is lacking here. Love the app interface design Vacuum (usually) leaves excellent vacuum lines when complete!

I have hardwood floors. It cleans them fine except around the edges. My issue is that it's difficult to use. I was never able to map out my areas as advertised. I'm not dumb but it's just not as easy as they say. It seems to continually need an assist when it gets hung up somewhere. Or just stops in the middle of the floor. My husband absolutely thinks it's the biggest waste of money. I'm not there (yet) but it's just not as helpful as I had hoped.

This iRobot cleans great when it works. I received this as a birthday gift in January. It has NEVER worked correctly. It constantly disconnects and take several tries to reconnect. It also often needs to be rebooted. Currently ours only runs when I manually press the button on the vacuum. It has been well over a month since I was able to get it to connect. I have followed all directions multiple times. It's frustrating that it won't work correctly.

Had a Shark that did a good job, but a friend raved about their iRobot i3, so I "traded up". Big disappointment. Huge. I have one, medium sized, short-haired dog, and the vacuum would continually leave long "ropes" of his hair in its wake on area rugs. But then when it passed over them again, it would not pick them up! It also did a mediocre job on bare floors - I would watch as it would leave very obvious small debris behind as it passed over. Got tired of cleaning up after the vacuum, so will save up and replace it with something that will do what it says.

IRobot does a great job of vacuuming the house - what I particularly like is that it regularly gets under things I would normally not do. It does take about four hours to clean our house. Only drawback I can see is in its navigation software (Although it is kind of fun to watch it try to figure out where it is and which way it needs to go)

The self-emptying feature has never worked properly. Now and again it will surprise me and I will hear it empty, but after most jobs that is not the case and i will have to vacuum out the bin with a Dirt Devil vacuum I have. It seems to me the bin is not particularly full when I do that. I know this was an expensive gift that my son and his wife gave me for Christmas, so I am very disappointed that it is not functioning as it ought to do.
