A: You can clean the washing machine by adding a gallon of vinegar and filling to the top. Leave the vinegar water for two days. Use a sponge and a clear fragrance-free dish detergent liquid (the kind used for hand washing; typically Seventh Generation) to scrub the blue gunk with a sponge. Then, use Seventh Generation laundry detergent or another nontoxic, clear, liquid laundry detergent, to prevent any gunk or residue from ever forming again, if you plan to continue using detergents instead of baking soda or other methods. If there is mold in the washing machine, vinegar is likely to get rid of that too, but if it doesn't and if you can see where the mold is, peroxide will always eliminate mold completely by being poured liberally directly on the mold without dilution (behind the 3% which is how it is sold).
