Q: Can you raise butterflies in here for release?

  • A: Thank you for your question. The National Geographic Bug Habitat isn’t recommended for butterflies. It doesn’t provide enough vertical space or airflow for them to properly emerge and expand their wings. A taller mesh-style habitat would be a better option. The bug habitat is designed as a temporary viewing and releasing of bugs, not long-term housing.

Q: Is the box breathable for the bug? because if the bugs went to survive in there, it needs to be able to breathe.

  • A: Thank you for your question. The bug habitat is designed as a temporary viewing container so collected bugs can be observed up close. While the lid does include air holes to help them breathe, it isn’t meant to be a permanent home. After observing them, it’s best to return the bugs to the place where they were found so they can continue living in their natural habitat.
