Utz Changed the Recipe and I'll Be Switching to Another Brand
1 out of 5 stars

We noticed in July 2025 that On The Border tortilla chips, which long were distinctively the best around, changed in quality and investigating the package, we see they are now produced by Utz in PA, not the previous manufacturer in Texas. The recipe/process has clearly changed - they are no longer light and crispy with occasional pockets of air and a great corn taste; now they have a tougher texture, taste more like corn meal, and are utterly mediocre. We will be testing and switching to another brand. Utz, you ruined a remarkable tortilla chip and for doing so, we will no longer be purchasing Utz pretzels or any other Utz snack foods.

I have bought TONS of this chip over the years. I always have 3-4 bags in my cabinet at a time. Now, they have NOTICABLY changed the way they are made and they went from being the best tortilla chip ever to the absolute WORST! They are completely tasteless now, very much resembling cardstock with no salt! I can't believe they would do this and clearly did it on the sly hoping consumers wouldn't notice because there was no mention of said change on the packaging. I will never buy these again unless they change them back to the way they were. By then, we will all have found a new replacement. They don't even deserve a one star...

These changed. These used to be the only tortilla chips we would buy. Now they are grainy, have a different texture, and just don't taste the same. Unfortunately, we will be switching brands.

Chips are good, but the bag is enormous and 1/4 full. Companies need to stop with this.

First time ordering delivery. Very convenient and really like these chips but arrived at bottom of box, crushed. Still good for a casserole topping.

It's like a reconstituted puree of a corn chip shaped into a crispy triangle. If I wanted a baby-food type of product I wouldn't want it as a tortilla chip but that's what this reminded me of.

When I received this part of my order all the chips were in pieces. Was not happy. If you could replace them would be appreciated.

Not a fan anymore - 1 year ago, Verified purchaser
Wow. Used to be my favorite go-to tortilla chip, now it's pretty pitiful. The most recent review on here is from a year ago... The recipe has def changed--chip is now thin and brittle w/ less (corn) taste, more salt. I won't be wasting my money on this product anymore...SAD.
Please back to the old recipe

I've been buying the Cafe and Thin Styles for years but the last two bags I bought have tasted different. After doing some searching, I see that the recipe has changed. These chips were my "go-to" because they tasted fresher than the other brands. They no longer have this quality. Please revert the recipe back so I can be a customer again.

Why anyone would take the best tasting chip on the market and change the recipe is beyond me. Just threw out two bags of what used to be my favorite chips.

These chips were my favorite, but the last couple bags have been different in texture and taste. I'm not a fan and will have to start comparing other brands.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I used to eat these chips as a guilty pleasure and the new recipe is trash. It literally tastes like cardboard. UTZ definitely chose to go to cheap route apparently.. because not only are these chips essentially like all the others, they’re worse. No one is going to want these. They’re terrible. I’d much rather eat crummy Tostitos. You guys robbed us of the greatest tortilla chip to ever exist 😩
Please change it back

On the border chips used to be the best chip you could buy in common stores. I was constantly promoting it to my friends. They had lots of air bubbles, flaky, salty, sort of thick. Compared to all the other tortilla chips available in the aisle, they stood alone as a step above the others. Now, I really like the other reviewer's description that they resemble Pringle's tortilla chips. It's just totally different (worse). They're thin, super homogenous, and bland like cardboard.Using the same branding on the terrible new chip that was used on the great old chip should be a crime.I will spend my free time downvoting this change any place I can because I want this terrible decision to have repercussions for someone.

These used to be our favorite tortilla chip. They were slightly sweet, and nice and crispy. Now the sweet fla or is gone and there is no flavor at all. They seem to be thicker and crunchy, not light and crispy. Perhaps the sweet corn was swapped with cattle feed corn to save money?

The recent recipe change was a mistake. These went from a must-buy chip that stood head and shoulders above other widely available tortilla chips to a subpar product that taste like they were made by someone who had only ever heard a description of a tortilla chip but had never tasted one themselves. Until the recipe is changed back, I recommend passing on these for an underwhelming bag of Tostitos or even a handful of wood chips

These have been our go to tortilla chip for years. I've purchased my last bag. I don't know what you did, but they're not the same flavor or texture. They taste like the tortilla chip version of pringles now. YUCK!
