Best Book I've Read in my Life thus Far
This book is pain. I am pain. This book is love. I am in love. I am love. This book has reached into the depths of my soul and unlatched the doors that kept the tears because there were rivers on my cheeks before I even realised I was crying. It is also joy and hope and laughter and courage and determination and art. This book is a work of art in and of itself. Jandy Nelson is an artist: a sculptor, an illustrator, a painter, a writer, whatever you conceive of when you think of the word “artist,” Jandy Nelson is, figuratively speaking. I SAW everything. I saw the flashing colours, the vivid streams of consciousness and the infinite depth of the human spirit. She did all this with 26 alphabets. A feat. This book shows the beauty of sibling love, the complicated nature of family dynamics and falling in love and falling out of love. The way every single feeling is described with such clarity and such assurance makes me feel like Jandy Nelson knew exactly what she wanted to accomplish and set out to do it. She succeeded. She passed with flying, dashing colours. The character development is WILD. Watching them dream and try and fail and learn and grow was a journey in and of itself. I wept for them, with them. The rawness of all their emotions flayed my own chest and heart open. Everything hit. Every word, every sentence, every single part of their lives that they narrated and screamed and cried out. I felt everything to the cells in my body. I usually colour-coordinate my tabs to the front cover of the book I’m reading so that it will be aesthetically pleasing. But the art of this book is just a myriad of every possible colour (because the colours shift ever so slightly in different lighting) against a white background. So I tabbed with every colour I owned. Because this book deserves every colour I own. If I could frame an entire book, I would frame this one. If I could only read one book that wasn’t my Bible for the rest of my life, I’m almost certain it will be this one. I don’t know if I’m capable of seeing the world in the same way after reading this book. If I could describe it one word, it would be this: glorious. Another: triumphant. A third: art. Nothing but pure art.
