Katherine Arden is the author of the national bestseller The Bear and the Nightingale. Born in Austin, Texas, Arden spent a year of high school in Rennes, France. Following her acceptance to Middlebury College in Vermont, she deferred enrollment for a year in order to live and study in Moscow. At Middlebury, she specialized in French and Russian literature. After receiving her BA, she moved to Maui, Hawaii, working every kind of odd job imaginable, from grant writing and making crêpes to guiding horse trips. Currently she lives in Vermont, but really, you never know.

Loved this One

I did not know where we were going with the story, but I am not disappointed. I love this so much. Vasya is such a great character. I love the folklore. I definitely recommend this.

Fairy tales with heart and gumption

Fairy tales are the heart and soul of our storytelling experience, and Katherine Arden adopts all the best of these traditions in The Girl in the Tower. It is an exhilarating, beautiful adventure alongside her gutsy protagonist Vasya and her flight from the threat of a life in a convent or tied to a prince in marriage. Vasya is instantly likable, and her story reels you in like a fish on a hook. Traveling through imperial Russia with her is a dream. The perfect blend of history and magic, the fantastical adventure of Vasya as she navigates soliders and frost spirits and royals will leave you itching for adventure of your own. Besides the exciting adventure, this story explores themes close to the heart of every fairy tale: family, commitment, and the daunting question of "what if."

Breathtaking, magical book

This follow up to The Bear and the Nightingale is just as stunning as its predecessor. We met Vasya as a fierce "wild child," now her resolve is strengthening into that of ferociously independent, strong-willed young woman with a mind to carve her own path in the world. She faces the nuances and pitfalls of the Grand Prince's Moscow court in Muscovite Russia, most notably the gender roles that are even more firmly entrenched than those of her upbringing. The stark differences are clearly illustrated as we witness Vasya's adventures while disguised as a boy in contrast with her married sister Olga, confined to the gilded cage of her palace tower. The conflict between the old gods/household spirits and the expanding church is once again brought into play, creating heart-pounding action that slides effortlessly between the visible and invisible realms. Vasya's interactions with the frost-king were my favorite parts; their evolving relationship is fraught with unspoken history, undeclared emotion, and untapped potential. I look forward to seeing Vasya uncover even more of her personal and familial connection with the spirit realm in the next book. The Girl in the Tower is altogether a breathtaking read, with the same level of lush language and enthralling description as The Bear and the Nightingale. We get to learn more about characters who were present briefly in Bear, namely Vasya's siblings, Olga and Sasha, along with Moscow's Grand Prince Dmitrii Ivanovich. A certain priest also returns, though his reappearance will not be met with delight. An extremely satisfying book all around!
