Q: Can you text and call your kid?

A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about Garmin vivofit jr. 3 Kids Fitness Tracker.
No, you cannot text or call your child using the Garmin vívofit jr. 3.
The vívofit jr. 3 is a dedicated fitness tracker rather than a "smartwatch" with communication features. It does not have a microphone, speaker, or cellular connectivity (LTE).

Q: How well does this do sleep tracking for a 9-year-old?
submitted by Cheyenne - 4 months ago
A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about Garmin vivofit jr. 3 Kids Fitness Tracker.
That's a very common question about the vívofit jr. 3! For a 9-year-old, the sleep tracking on this device is best described as useful for general bedtime and duration data, but it is not highly accurate for detailed sleep stages.
Here is a breakdown of how it works and what you can expect:
🌙 How the Sleep Tracking Works
The vívofit jr. 3 tracks sleep primarily using a built-in accelerometer (a motion sensor).
Motion-Based: The watch detects when your child is still (asleep) versus moving around (awake or restless).
Parental Control: You must set your child's normal bedtime and wake time in the Garmin Jr. App. This "sleep window" helps the device determine when it should start and stop looking for sleep patterns.
Data Provided: In the parent's Garmin Jr. app, you will see statistics including:
Total Hours of Sleep: This is generally the most reliable metric.
Estimated Sleep Levels/Movement: This is a basic gauge of how restless the night was, but it's not a deep analysis of REM or Deep Sleep.
✅ Strengths for a 9-Year-Old
Establishing Routine: It is excellent for helping parents monitor if their child is getting the recommended amount of sleep. The primary value is in tracking sleep duration and consistency (was bedtime on time? did they wake up early?).
Encourages Wear: Since the watch is durable, swim-friendly, and has a battery life of up to a year (no charging needed), the child can comfortably wear it all night, every night, ensuring data consistency.
Non-Invasive: Because it lacks an optical Heart Rate (HR) sensor (which is needed for advanced sleep stage tracking), it's a simpler, less-invasive device that is perfect for a child's wrist.
⚠️ Limitations to Be Aware Of
Less Detailed than Adult Trackers: Since it uses only the accelerometer (motion) and not heart rate, it cannot accurately track specific sleep stages (like Light, Deep, and REM sleep). The sleep data is an estimation based on lack of movement.
"Garbage In, Garbage Out": If your 9-year-old is lying still in bed reading or watching a tablet before falling asleep, the device may prematurely register this still time as sleep. You may have to manually adjust the reported sleep time in the app.
In summary: The vívofit jr. 3 is a great tool for a 9-year-old to encourage activity and responsibility, and its sleep tracking function is best used to confirm they are staying in bed during their target sleep window and getting adequate total hours of rest.

Q: Does this give detailed information about sleep? More than just sleep and awake information, similar to other Garmin versions. Like HR during sleep, rem, light sleep etc
submitted by Mommabear - 4 months ago
A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about the Garmin vivofit jr. 3 Kids Fitness Tracker
The Garmin Vívofit Jr. 3 is a fantastic kids' activity tracker, but its sleep tracking is not as detailed as the advanced sleep monitoring found on premium adult Garmin watches (like the Venu or Fenix series). The Vívofit Jr. 3 primarily uses an accelerometer (motion sensor) to track sleep, and it lacks the built-in optical Heart Rate (HR) sensor that is necessary for the advanced stages.

Q: Am I understanding the watch correctly? There is no need tobuy a plan for this watch? It works without a monthly plan and utilizes bluetooth for some of its connectivity for parent/kid interaction?
submitted by Whitt - 5 months ago
A: Hi, thanks for reaching out about Garmin vivofit jr. 3 Kids Fitness Tracker
Yes, you are correct, no extra plan/subscription is required and it does use Bluetooth to connect to any phone/tablet using Android or IOS.
If you have any additional questions, we welcome you to contact MyTGTtech at 833-848-8324 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.
The Garmin Vivofit Jr 3 is designed for kids, offering features like step tracking, chore management, and rewards that encourage active lifestyles. Many guests appreciate its ease of use and the fun it brings to daily activities. However, the watch's dim display has been a common concern, making it difficult for children to read the time in low light. Overall, it serves as a great motivational tool for kids, but improvements in visibility would enhance the experience.

Poor design
Such a disappointment. The design allows the actual watch to pop in and out which cause my sons to pop out while running errands and now it’s gone.

Great little Garmin!
We are a Garmin family. The youngest kids like their Vivofit jr.3 watches. They enjoy competing with each other with step counts. These watches also are very tough.

Sent it back
I think Garmin could have done better, especially for the price. The watch screen is so small and so dark. You can barely see the screen. So disappointed that I sent it back.

Just what I wanted.
I have had this for about a month. Wanted a device for time, and steps walked that didn’t need charging every couple of days. Only wish is that it would show distance walked.

Dim screen, minimal functionality
Pretty lackluster features for the price. Would be great if: 1) The screen was better lit. It's almost impossible to see at certain times of day or in certain light conditions. 2) There were more features - why can't the kids see the list of chores and their status on the watch? Or their sleep data? Instead, this all lives in the app which I don't give my child free rein with. Why can't the watch also show heart rate? There just aren't enough bells & whistles to make it worth the price.

Great Fitness Tracker for kids
We struggled to find a watch that wasn't big and bulky for my 6 year old. This is the perfect size, bonus that it tracks steps and activity. Garmin customer service is fantastic, hands down best customer service I've ever dealt with!!

A hit with our daughter
We bought the vivofit jr. 3 for our 11-year-old daughter as a way to encourage her to be more active, and just prior to a family vacation. She really likes the watch and has been wearing it 24/7. My wife and I track activity (steps, etc.) too, so we have fun comparing numbers. The pairing with my smartphone has worked well. Overall we're happy with the watch, with the one downside being the display which, while readable by my daughter, seems quite dark.

Screen is horrible
Overall its a good watch but the screen is really really bad, you can't see anything until you press the backlit button. Other than that, its a good watch and tracks decent metrics for the kids to keep them active etc.

Disappointingly poor quality
I read the reviews about the dim screen and poor quality but decided to take a chance and see for myself. Well, the reviews were right! It was very difficult to view the time and other features on the watch if your hand is not at the right angle. Otherwise you would constantly have to click the button to make the watch light come on, that was a pain. The screen also wasn't very secure. I returned before giving to my son for Christmas and went with another brand. I would have kept the watch if it weren't for the 2 issues. Everything else about it was great.

Terrible screen!
Gift for my daughter. She was excited to track her steps and chores but the screen is SO DARK!! We are returning it. Their marketing images show bright/normal display but unless you are outside on a sunny day or inside with a bright overhead light, you will little to no visibility on the screen. We are disappointed and are returning it.

Great fitness tracker for kids
I bought this as a gift for my 9 year old for Christmas. She had been asking for a fitness tracker watch. She loves that she can keep track of the steps, use a stopwatch and see when she meets certain goals. I like that we don't have to charge the watch (battery life it's it should last about a year!). I also like that I can give her tasks/chores and then mark them off in the app. The sleep tracker is fairly accurate too! The negative so far is only that I can't download the app onto her Firetablet so the app is only on my phone (she does not have a phone). This is a minor problem for us, however. I'll definitely be purchasing one for my other kiddos when they ask for one!
