Campfire grates are commonly made from steel variants — plain steel, carbon steel, or stainless steel.

Typical load capacities for campfire grates and grills are around 20–30 pounds for food and cookware.

Adjustable-height tripod grates offer a height range (for example, about 14" to 23") so you can raise or lower the cooking surface relative to the coals, allowing finer control for slow-cooking at lower heat or quick searing at higher heat.

Campfire grates use food-grade, heat-resistant coatings and high-heat finishes. Stainless-steel construction and ceramic deflector plates are also used where corrosion resistance and even heat distribution are priorities.

Setup varies by model: many use tool-free folding or collapsing legs, tripods snap together with spring-snap buttons, and some folding grates need minimal assembly such as attaching handles with an included hex key.

Campfire grates and cooking surfaces are offered in rectangular, square, round, and specialized half-moon shapes (the latter often used for kamado-style setups).
