Most handheld accessible shower heads use a standard 1/2-inch threaded connection and attach to a standard shower arm. At least one option is described as installable by hand on a standard shower arm without tools.

Flow rates vary by model. Examples provided include 1.0 gallons per minute (GPM), 1.8 GPM, and 2.5 GPM.

Features that support seated use include a detachable handheld shower, a height-adjustable slider to lower or raise the handset, and long flexible hoses so the user or caregiver can reach the body. Some handhelds also include an on/off or pause control to stop flow while lathering.

Slide bars offer a secure mount plus height adjustability for a handheld shower; some models specify high bearing capacity and ADA compliance. Grab bars provide nonslip support and added stability and can sometimes double as a towel bar.

Some setups include cUPC-certified pressure-balancing (anti-scald) valves to reduce sudden temperature shifts. Separate controls such as a pause feature are also described that reduce flow without changing temperature settings.
