Q: can this be used to root christmas cactus>

submitted by kellie - 11 days ago
  • A: Hi Kellie! Yes, our Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix can be used for a Christmas cactus. After taking the cuttings (taking Y-shaped cuttings of 1–3 stem segments during spring or autumn), let the cuttings callus in a dry area for 1–2 days, then plant in moist, succulents & cacti mix. Keep in indirect light, and roots typically form in 3–6 weeks.

Q: Is this Vegan (no animal by-products, no manure, no slaughter house products)?

submitted by flvegan - 6 months ago
  • A: Hi there, thank you for your question! Our Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix is not considered vegan. While it’s made primarily from natural plant-based and mineral ingredients, it does contain poultry litter and feather meal, which are animal by-products. These ingredients are commonly used in organic fertilizers as natural sources of nutrients but would not meet vegan standards.

Q: Is this a good mix for orchids?

submitted by Olay - 9 months ago
  • A: Hi there! Thanks for your question. This mix isn’t ideal for orchids. While the Back to the Roots Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix is great for plants that need fast drainage, like succulents and cacti, orchids have different needs. They grow best in a loose, chunky medium—such as bark or sphagnum moss—that allows plenty of airflow around their roots. This cactus mix is likely too dense for orchids and may hold too much moisture, which can lead to root rot. For best results, we recommend using a potting mix specifically formulated for orchids. If you'd like help choosing the right soil, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com—we’re happy to help!

Top notch succulent and cacti soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product as an incentive for my honest review This soil has a nice airy light weight appearance. It has added limestone to control the PH along with perlite, sand , and aged bark, for aeration and drainage. It is enriched with organic plant food that provides just the right amount for my succulents and cacti. It provided nice drainage upon watering. I highly recommend this top notch product.

Soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love succulent/cacti plants, so living in WA, you don’t get great big desert plants. So my puny lil window plants will have to do—anyway, this mix seems to be doing OK. I have read many times that perlite isn’t the best for succulents(?) not sure how true that actually is. But after placing my little succulent clippings into a pot, I noticed there is a LOT of sticks going on through this soil. Not very ideal if you want a fancy mini succulent/cactus set up with rocks placed just right on top of the soil. In their natural habitat, there aren’t a million sticks in the soil? This mix looked like it was half bark, half potting soil. Which isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing. So, we shall see how well this stuff works—or doesn’t work. I’ll update my review if there are any changes!

Gnats!

Do not buy. You will have gnats and your plants will die. Also, all the positive reviews are from people who received it for free in exchange for a review. Do not trust those reviews.

Hi there! We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with fungus gnats — they are common with all organic soils, and love to nest in warm, moist soil with good organic material. Please reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with a full photo of the front and back of the bag. We'd love to hear from you and send a replacement as needed.

Great texture and drainage so far—excited to see h

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the Back to the Roots Succulent Mix to repot my new succulent and so far I’m really happy with it. The soil has a nice texture and particle size that seems perfect for succulents. It drains well and was easy to work with when planting. I haven’t had enough time to see long-term results yet, but my plant looks healthy and settled in so far. I’m excited to keep watching her grow and see how she does in this mix!

Good mix

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This succulent and cacti soil has a great mix of bark, sand, peat, and perlite. I usually supplement my soil but decided to leave this as is. It has good drainage which keeps my Christmas cactus happy. I like that it has some pre added plant food, and I hope my cactus continues to thrive!

Looking for wall balanced soil for your succulents

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Provides excellent drainage. This special blend is specifically made for succulents. It is organic and is suitable to keep your plants healthy and alive. The packaging was ok but when I opened it up there were several gnats in the bag. I’m hoping that my other plants in the house do not attract these gnats. Overall a good product for the price.

Perfect mix

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This potting mix is perfect for succulents. Succulents have different needs than the rest of my garden, so when trying to add succulents to my garden I was stumped on soil. This succulent mix is the perfect blend and will help boost my garden. The bag is a small size which is great for versatile needs. There is no pressure to buy a huge bag if you don’t need it. Would recommend this product if you are hoping to start a succulent garden!

My Succulents LOVE This Soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I repotted my succulents and cacti using this soil, and one of my plants started blooming for for first time in over a year (those little red flowers on the aloe-like succulent plant visible in the picture attached)! This is an excellent soil mix for those looking for a blend with great drainage capabilities—prior to using, I had them in a moisture control soil mix, however they were not nearly as happy—I am already seeing a ton of new growth too! All in all, this was a 5/5 for me, and I’ll for sure be purchasing more when these little plant babies need to move up again in their planter size.

Well-draining, clean succulent mix that keeps plan

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used back to the roots succulent mix-6 quart for repotting several of my succulents and I’m very happy with the results. The soil has a light, well draining composition that’s perfect for cacti and succulents, helping prevent overwatering and root rot. The texture feels airy and doesn’t stay soggy after watering. The packaging was sturdy and easy to open, and I didn’t notice any insects or unwanted debris in the mix. My plants adjusted quickly after repotting and look healthy and vibrant.

Great soil for succulents

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Back to the Roots Succulent Mix in the 6 quart bag is a great value! The blend provides necessary drainage for succulents and cacti to avoid overwatering, plus it includes necessary nutrients to help your plants grow. Having specialty soil like this takes the guess work out of growing and maintaining succulents. I’d recommend this to experienced and new succulent growers.
