Q: Why would you make it mint , mints can dry your supply up is what my lacticist told me

submitted by Why25 - 6 months ago
  • A: We appreciate you reaching out! Essential Postnatal itself doesn’t contain any mint, but the tab insert included in the bottle (to help soften the taste) is contains a peppermint essence. The current levels of peppermint used on our ScentCerts are shown to be consumed safely for women postpartum.* We hired an external consulting firm to conduct a toxicological assessment of exposure to peppermint during pregnancy and lactation and the assessment concluded that the levels of peppermint in our products do no pose any safety risk or concern.

The postnatal vitamins have garnered mixed feedback from guests, with many appreciating the inclusion of essential nutrients and the convenience of a single supplement. However, the strong mint flavor and fishy aftertaste have been significant drawbacks for some, particularly those who are breastfeeding. Guests have noted improvements in energy and overall well-being, but concerns about taste and its impact on milk supply have led to hesitations in recommending the product. Overall, it serves as a decent option for postpartum nutrition.

    Fish burps.

I originally bought these because my local Target stopped selling my favorite Rainbow Light prenatals (still my favorite) I loved how these Ritual prenatals smell and taste like lemon…. Until they don’t. Once you burp you will wish you never swallowed it. It’s actually really bad. I don’t think I’ve ever burped up fish like I do with these. Being pregnant, that is not a good mix. I will not be repurchasing these unfortunately.

    Gross Fish After Taste/ Burps

I haven't been on this vitamin for long, so I am not sure about how well it works. But I 100% agree with many other reviews on here, I taste the nasty fish taste after taking these. Either I will burp the fish after taste, or even worse, right now I have hiccups that are just continously bringing the fish taste to my mouth. It's horrible. I will be looking for a new vitamin.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. We’re so sorry to hear about the aftertaste. Our Essential Multivitamins are formulated with Omega-3 DHA from microalgae (not fish), which sometimes has a naturally strong taste that can linger for some people. A couple of tips that may help: taking your vitamin with food, or right before bed, can often minimize any aftertaste. We completely understand if the experience wasn’t right for you, but your feedback is so valuable as we continue to improve. Thank you for giving Ritual a try.

    Awfuk heartburn avoid if breastfeeding.

If you already have heartburn do not take these. They have ignited my heartburn more than anything ever had. Also I’m breastfeeding and since taking them by baby has gotten so fussy. The mint is not good for supply. I’m going to try to return.

We’re so sorry to hear about your experience and truly appreciate you sharing these details with us. While Essential Postnatal itself doesn’t contain any mint, the tab insert in the bottle (which helps soften the taste) is infused with a small amount of peppermint essence. The current levels used are shown to be safe for postpartum women, and an external toxicological assessment confirmed that the levels in our product do not pose a safety risk for pregnancy or lactation. Thanks for your feedback, and we're so sorry to hear about your experience. For some, taking the multivitamin with food or at a different time of day may help. If you continue to have discomfort, feel free to reach out to our team at my@ritual.com. I currently take cranberry demanose, magnesium glycinate, probiotic and THESE! I also exclusively breastfeed and I strongly BELIEVE THESE PILLS helped my hair not to fall off. I don’t know what it is but I did stopped taking them for like a month and my hair started to fall off, I took them again and I barely have anything fall out HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    No dv for calcium..

The mint essence makes it easy to take. They do still give the same aftertaste as most vitamins, but it’s a bit less intense. Sadly, this postnatal vitamin does not have a DV of calcium, which is especially important for nursing mamas.
1 reply from Ritual Team team - 4 months ago
Thanks so much for your thoughtful review! We're glad to hear the mint essence made taking the Postnatal a bit easier. You're absolutely right that calcium is an important nutrient during the postpartum period. We chose not to include calcium in our formula because most people are able to meet their calcium needs through diet. Instead, we focus on including calcium-helper nutrients like boron, magnesium, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2, which help support calcium absorption and bone health. We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback! 💛

    NOT BABY PROOF

I bought these as I was recovering post partum and couldn’t finish the bottle. They’re okay going down but I had fish burps later 🤢 now my 10 month old has found the bottle and opened it and spilled the vitamins multiple times. I have no clue how she’s getting it open but she is. Even after double checking the lid it is absolutely not child proof.
1 reply from Ritual Team team - 5 months ago
Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. We're really sorry to hear about your experience, especially as a new parent managing postpartum recovery and a curious little one! While our bottles are designed to be child-resistant, they are not fully child-proof. According to FDA regulations, child-proof (or child-secure) packaging is required for dietary supplements only when they contain an equivalent of 250 mg or more of elemental iron per bottle. Since our supplements contain much less than that, the packaging isn't classified as child-proof by regulation, but your feedback is incredibly important, and we take it seriously. We’d like to share this with our Quality team to better understand what may have happened and how we can improve. In the meantime, we recommend storing the bottle well out of reach, like you would with any medication or supplement. Please email us at my@ritual.com. Thanks again for reaching out, and for your thoughtful diligence in keeping your family safe.

I wanted to like them :(

I wanted to like these! They seem like such a quality item. But it’s true (other reviews)… they tanked my supply. I’m almost 6 months postpartum so I figured it wouldn’t matter but during/after two weeks, there was an obvious supply dip and my let down was taking forever. After two days of stopping these, my supply and let down is going back to normal. Had to return

    Fish burps

I like the nutrients included and that you don't have to take a separate dha supplement, which I've done before. I don't mind the mint essence. Unfortunately this gave me fish burps, which I've never experienced before. That's a deal breaker for me.

    Seems like a good prenatal

This isn't my go to prenatal vitamin but I take this when I can't get my powdered form prenatal in because I don't have my daily smoothie. It seems like a good prenatal. I still prefer my other brand but this is a good backup.

    Tanked my supply

Don’t take these if breastfeeding/pumping! After finishing my prenatals, I switched to these at 2 months postpartum and they immediately tanked my supply. I’m exclusively pumping and had an over supply, but once I started taking these vitamins I could barely pump 2 oz each time. This was super stressful until I finally realized it was the vitamins that caused it. I never leave reviews but I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. Nature Made pre/postnatals are the best and ever since I switched back to that brand I’m back to pumping my usual amount

    Do not use if breastfeeding/pumping

This vitamin 100% negatively affected my breastmilk supply. Peppermint is known to adversely affect supply and I am shocked that a company specifically targeting postnatal women would use it. After reading some reviews other places, I have seen that the company responded to other users concerns stating that the oil is only in the insert things and not in the capsule itself, however, it seems to still be enough to have affected mine and others’ milk. If you are breastfeeding or pumping, I would not recommend this vitamin at all. After ceasing taking this vitamin, my milk supply began to return.

Listen to the other reviews about taste!!

These look so nice but taste so bad. The other reviews were right but I thought I’d give it a shot. I cannot get over the horrible taste of the mint, it is too strong and leaves a bad aftertaste. For the price and amount provided (2/day so 30 days worth) it is not worth it imo. For those of you gals who still want to use them so they don’t go to waste I recommend drinking water and then putting the pills in your mouth, swallowing both after, that’s the only way I’ve been able to take them anyways.
1 reply from Ritual Team team - 1 year ago
Hi there! We're sorry to hear that the mint essence was too strong for your taste. If you prefer, you can remove the mint essence to help lessen the flavor, which might make taking the capsules more comfortable for you.

    Awful! Do not recommend

Took the Prenatals my whole pregnancy and loved them. So I just decided to continue postnatal, wrong choice. The smell is so fishy and gross that touching the vitamins for 5 seconds to put in my mouth makes my hands smell for hours. Do not recommend at all.

Hi! Our vegan algal oil can contribute to the smell/taste, but it shouldn't be unbearable or leave any smell on your hands. It sounds like a capsule may have broken in your bottle. If you haven't already, please send us a note at my@ritual.com. We'll be happy to look into this for you.
