Q: What is the fabric made of, it says mesh? But is it a coating on top of the mesh to keep dogs nails out?

While it is scratch-resistant, it’s not entirely claw-proof. Determined dogs and repeated scratching may still cause damage over time. If your pet is particularly persistent, you might want to consider a metal gate as a more durable alternative.
