Does not work
I bought this a month ago and it doesn't work. I turn it to the pH side and the meter only moves slightly. So, I tested it in vinegar. It moves the same amount from about 7.5 to 7. No matter what I put it in, it moves .5. I was thinking maybe the battery is dead, but I cannot get it open to see if there is a battery. There are zero instructions.

Don't waste your money
I sensed this was inaccurate and finally tested it against ph drops. Totally off.

The greatest $20 I ever spent!
Seems a lot of people got duds, but mine works great and has from the beginning. I have a feeling all those people who claimed it didn't work were sticking it in dry soil. When testing, always make the soil as wet as it would be when watering your plants. Very handy tool I use almost daily. I calibrate it with another handheld PH probe to make sure It's working as intended. Fertility feature is a blessing, plants are almost always symptomatic of the reading. I plan on buying another one just to have a backup lol

Works as it should when following instructions.
I bought this yesterday and today I tested my soil against litmus paper. Identical readings. I also tested my soil fertility against organic compost slurry and found I need to enrich my soil. Used as instructed this works perfectly, I imagine the probes need to be shined up before use as it gets older, as does an testing equipment made of conductive materials.

Needle never moves
I have tried several times to test my soil before realizing the needle never strays from it's original position. I doubt it would make a difference if I stuck it in wet lime ro battery acid. Useless. I sure wish I had that $20 back.

One star because 0 was not a choice useless
Soil tester reads the same no matter where you use it 7 ph.Totally piece of garbage.Had I read reviews I wouldn't purchase. You would think that Burpee would care enough that everyone is writing the same thing to actually pull the product.

This is useless.
I bought one of these a few years ago and it has never wavered off the 7 numeric scale for ph or the ideal scale for fertility. Was talking to a neighbor who farms a field adjoining our property and he let me use his tester. The ph was way off and the ground needed feeding immediately.

1 Star is way too high
Doesn’t work. I have tried multiple soil and also followed instructions right from using distilled water. Wasted money on distilled water too. DO NOT BUY

Don’t buy it
Bought this to test my soil after lawn company recommended a lime treatment. This reads a little under 6.5 on every soil. I dug up soil and watered it down like recommended. Still hasn’t changed. I will be getting a working ph tester. Glad I read these reviews before buying sulpher instead of lime. May have killed my whole yard. One star is too high.

Not sure
Every sample that I tested seemed to be with a pH of almost exactly 7.0. I added some vinegar to my soil mixture and retested. It moved only slightly. On the fertility measure, the needle jumped significantly making me wonder if the unit is not mislabeled and the Fertility position is measuring pH and vice versa.

not recommended by me
I bought this soil tester but was apprehensive when I saw them hanging on the rack the reading 6.3 so I wend through all 5 they had the same reading. I bought one anyway, when I tested the soil like the instruction said the reading never changed. I don't think I can trust this this soil tester to give me a proper reading.

Works Well When Following Directions
I purchased this about a year or two ago. Just put in 2 raised garden beds. The vegetables growing from seeds are not thriving, so I decided to test the soil. First try the reading did not work. The needle did not move. I decided to soak the area for two to three minutes and tried again. It worked perfectly. So if you are having trouble make sure you use a lot of water before testing.

DOES NOT WORK - DONY BUY
Tested my soil and everything was showing a PH of 7 to 6. Thought that was strange so tested this in distilled vinegar and said PH is about 6.5. Really?? Come on. I know enough that that reading is way off. Fertility reads 3.5 so the meter works. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

We are sorry you were disappointed with your soil tester. The tester is not designed to work in straight liquids, it needs to be used in soils as it measures conductivity. The soil must be warm and fairly moist, and it takes several minutes to get a reading. The prongs also need to be thoroughly clean before each use. If it does not work using these parameters you are welcome to return it for a refund. Thank you for your feedback. - Burpee

Great idea - It just doesn't work!
When I saw this tester I thought what a great idea! However, after trying 2 of them, they just don't work. Don't waste your money, buy a real soil tester!

We are sorry that you are disappointed with your electronic soil tester. This does need a fairly moist soil that is also warm in order to work properly, and it must be completely clean each time it is used. It will not work in straight liquids. If it still does not work, please feel free to return it for a refund. Thank you for your feedback! - Burpee
