This device does keep time. Cannot count swim laps well (randomly adds or subtracts a lap or 2 or more) and support claims it is still learning. Uses my phone's GPS for walking; but has me walking in small circles, through houses and forests, and other nonsensical paths. Step count does not coincide with distance walked (remember support touts this as "smart"). Cannot be trusted. Pretty useless.

We appreciate your feedback! After selecting the pool size on the watch, metrics are gathered with the help of the accelerometer within the vivosmart 5. If you need to adjust the total number of laps after recording a pool swim activity, you can do so in Garmin Connect by following the instructions outlined here: http://ms.spr.ly/6424S7Cm6. With regard to the Connected GPS feature, since the vivosmart 5 doesn't have a GPS antenna built-in, it can utilize the GPS in your phone. Tall buildings and trees can affect GPS accuracy, and to improve the GPS signal, you'll want to make sure your watch and phone are in close proximity of one another and ensure that your location settings are set to the highest accuracy. You can learn more about Connected GPS here: http://ms.spr.ly/6425S7CmB. As far as your step accuracy concern, your watch is designed to track walking motions as steps. Arm movement while walking will be captured by the internal 3-axis accelerometer in the watch, and it will record each complete swing of the arm as two steps. This FAQ provides additional details about this: http://ms.spr.ly/6426S7Cm8 If you have any questions or concerns, Garmin Support would be happy to assist you! You can reach them directly at 1-800-800-1020 (Mon-Fri 7am-7pm CDT). (KS)

I obtained this watch for FREE from my Medicare Advantage healthcare provider. First, my phone plan has no internet access; it just has text and talk only. Had to use a laptop to connect to Garmin to get the watch just to turn on. Had to find then buy a special cable to make that happen. Second, the watch does NOT come with a charger. Had to find then buy a special charger just for this watch to charge up. Once up and running it was a nice watch. It fit well and is easy to read and use. Unfortunately for me, I'm just not a watch wearer. Haven't worn one in over 40 years. Wore the watch for one day and didn't like it wrapped around my wrist. Took it off, packed it up and am now looking for a friend/relative to give to or stranger to buy. But the watch did EVERYTHING as advertised. It just wasn't for me.

I bought this approximately a month ago and after opening it, I put it back in the box to return it. I waited a week to see if maybe I would keep it and decided to try it again. First of all there was no outlet connection for it so I had to set up a charging station for it. I didn’t count on that happening. Second of all, the font on the face of it is uneven in brightness, third the font for the steps is too small to easily read. I paid too much for this to not be happy with it.but think it’s too late to either get a refund or another Garmin product. And it flashes lights from the underside which is distracting, especially at night or in a dark room. Sorry I bought it. I loved the battery operated garmin I had before, it was simple, didn’t need to be charged every few days and was readable easily, and oh, no flashing green and red lights.

Room for Improvement - catch up to Fitbit

I’ve had my vivosmart 5 for a couple months now and I like it. It does all the basics, however, there are some features I really miss from my old Fitbit that my Garmin doesn’t have. The first and biggest feature lacking is activity detection. I will be active for 90 minutes and despite a spike in heart rate, the tracker doesn’t record an activity automatically and requires me to manually enter my activity in the app. Sometimes I don’t know the exact time or duration of an activity, and I wish the tracker could detect that. (also, you cannot change the type of activity after you live track it, if you set your tracker to record your activity in the moment. So if you tracked your ice skating session as cardio, you can’t go into the app and change it to ice skating. But ice skating is not an option to live track an activity and the live tracking options are very limited.) Another major issue is the app is very clunky to use. There is no easy way to add an activity. There are also things the app shows front and center that I think should be swapped out for other things, for example it shows total calories for an activity instead of active calories. You have to search for active calories under stats. I don’t really know why I would want to see my baseline calories from a workout, as point of tracking the workout is for the active calories burned. The app needs many improvements and I would appreciate if they somehow solicited additional feedback specifically on the app. Next is that sleep detection is a bit lacking. If I take a nap outside of normal overnight sleep time, the garmin doesn’t detect or record it. Additionally, I find that garmin vastly overestimates calories burned. Very significantly in some cases. Not sure what’s going on there but you can tell right away that the number is inflated. Also, I have also noticed that the garmin needs to be cleaned throughly and right away if it gets wet. There are so many tiny crevices in the band that you can’t wear it in the shower regularly without cleaning it right away or else it gets gross inside, even though I would wash the band in the shower. Overall, I like the garmin, but it still leaves me missing my old Fitbit.

Walking - does not accurately show path walked (yes, phone is connected and location services on). Swimming - cannot count laps properly. At first it added some, then it started subtracting some. Becomes useless. Overall - stopped monitoring heart rate, etc. Error message confusiong; needed to reset watch twice now (only owned 3 weeks).

Bought this to replace a Fitbit Inspire. I wanted it to count my steps every day. Unfortunately you guys seem to think we need need heart rate, sleep time and other body measurements are a necessity on a watch/fitness tracker. The extra non-essential tools are more of pain in the butt than a necessity. And the pop ups concerning news flashes are a useless distraction. Why do you think they need to be a part of a watch/fitness tracker? a watch

I really love the watch and its many features. The only thing I would like to see as an option would be a band made from a different material, as I have very sensitive skin and it does cause irritation.
