Q: All the Garmin watches I have looked at have cancer warnings—why? Other brands in this category do not have cancer warnings. Are the other brands missing something or is there something about the Garmin watches specifically that warrants the warning?

submitted by Jp - 6 months ago
  • A: Hi Jp, thanks for reaching out about Garmin Vivoactive 5 Black and Slate Garmin's website says the following: Why is this warning on Garmin products? Products with any amount of substances covered by Proposition 65 — even at levels that may not be harmful — must carry this warning unless proven to have “no significant risk” of exposure. Since almost all electronic products contain 1 or more of the chemicals listed under Proposition 65, we added this warning on our packaging to make sure our customers stay informed. How can I trust that your products are safe? With Garmin products, the exposure may be well within the “no significant risk” range; however, we choose to put the Proposition 65 warning label on our products to help you make an informed purchase decision. According to the California government, “The fact that a product bears a Proposition 65 warning does not mean by itself that the product is unsafe.” They also explain, “You could think of Proposition 65 more as a ‘right to know’ law than a pure product safety law.” (http://www.p65warnings.ca.gov) If you have any additional questions, we welcome you to contact MyTGTtech at 833-848-8324 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

I boughtbthe Vivoactive 5 two weeks ago and I am enjoying it tremendously. It has just the right size. Has great software, snapshots, summaries, it incorporates lots of data. I sometimes can't turn off the activity exactly when I want, have to work the buttons for a few seconds, possibly my inexperience.

I've been using a fitbit for walking plus a golf watch for golfing for 10 years. Nice to have one watch for both!! The only downside, the garmin watch doesn't record as many steps for things like mowing the yard, etc. where the arms are swinging. Way more features than I use but overall really like the product.

I've had my Vivoactive 5 for a few weeks. The first charge lasted 10+ days and when I did have to recharge it went from 3% to 100% in 90 minutes. I moved from a different brand of smart watch and noticed the step counted seems to be more accurate than my old watch. But the main selling point for me was the disc golf app and how easily it interfaces with Udisc so I can keep score on the watch instead of fishing my phone out of the bag after every hole. I could type more, but my Garmin Vivoactive 5 just reminded me that it is time to get up and move to be more active.

It’s Way too complicated to setup - need a special college course to complete a setup. Simplicity - should be a modo for the users. May have a special tab for advanced settings. Moreover, this watch is dictating you what to do. Just a few examples; “take a rest and start moving” or “keep moving” EVERY Hour!!!! Or it starts buzzing in the morning despite the fact that my phone is still on the sleep mode?!!! Also it suddenly decides that I need to run, or I need to pick up a body to challenge? I DID NOT set it up!!!! I don’t want the watch dictates me what to do! I’ve tried multiple times to adjust settings on my phone and my watch-no success!!! It seems it’s running on its own! I’m thinking of returning it and I would discourage regular folks like me from buying it.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your frustrations with us. Many of the features you've described can be disabled by following some simple steps. The Move Alerts and Relaxation Reminders can be turned off by holding the bottom button, then selecting Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Health & Wellness. From there, you can toggle off any alerts that you don't want to use. In particular, you mentioned Move Alerts and Stress Alerts, so you'll want to turn those off. For full details of the alerts you can change, check out this link: http://ms.spr.ly/6420sENda As for your watch vibrating while your watch is in sleep mode, it sounds like you may need to set up your Sleep/Wake Window. Doing this will put your watch into automatic Do Not Disturb mode during your chosen hours, so your watch will not vibrate. Here's how to do that: http://ms.spr.ly/6421sENdx If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Garmin Support at 800-800-1020. When you're given automated options, you can select option 3 for Fitness products, then select option 2 to speak with a representative who specializes in Vivoactive watches. *KC

I've had this watch for a few months. After tweaking what I want it to do, notify me to this and that. Turning off the sleep mode and others things I have no need for, it still sends a nightly reminder asking if I'm awake. I don't sleep with it on my wrist. I have no sleeping issues. I worked shift work 40+ years, I know how to sleep when time allows. Way to many alternative sports loaded on here. With all these different types of activities, you would think hiking would be one of those. Nah had to down load one from the app store. It's great for what I use it for, just not into challenges and letting the world know I road 50 miles.

I had literally worn my Vivoactive 3 every day since September 2017 and I very much enjoyed it. The battery life was never fantastic but toward the end it was getting worse. I decided to invest in a Vivoactive 5 last month and enjoy the slimmer profile, the awesome battery life, the accuracy of the elevation sensor for my bike rides and the super bright screen. My Vivoactive 5 is my new health coach and so far we are getting along great!

I loved my vivoactive 4s, so I bought this thinking it would be the same. The screen was so insanely sensitive, I went on a few long runs with it and the screen would constantly shift with just a drop of sweat on it. I was going insane, I’d pause my run at a stoplight and the watch would save without me touching the screen. I live in Florida, so the humidity might have to do with it, but it would never stay on the running data screen as I would run. I’d look down and my watch would be on the music screen or something else instead of just showing my pace. I returned it after giving it three weeks. I tried reducing the sensitivity and other controls in the settings, and it still disappointed. It’s a cute watch, just I would not recommend for serious training.

1 reply from Care team - 8 days ago
The vivoactive 5 does not have a barometric altimeter and cannot track floors climbed or stairs. With regard to having to reconnect it with Garmin Connect every day, it should automatically reconnect whenever the app is opened and the watch is within range. I recommend making sure that the Garmin Connect app is up-to-date, and that check to ensure that Bluetooth is enabled. This FAQ provides additional troubleshooting suggestions that should be helpful: http://ms.spr.ly/6425sEPaP If you continue to have trouble, Garmin Support would be happy to assist you further and can be reached at 1-800-800-1020 Monday Through Friday, 7am - 7pm CST.
