A: The heating element in most toasters is made from nichrome wire, an alloy of nickel and chromium. Guess you can't have a toaster. Roast your bagels over a fire!

A: The HamiltonBeach Team's answer is incorrect. I put a 6" slice of rye bread in there and it doesn't even toast the top 1 1/2 inches of the toast. Hamilton Beach needs to test this and correct it.

Lasted about 2 years, so, an average toaster
I purchased this toaster in September 2024, it is now mid June 2026. One slot has a spring or something broken and you have to hold it open to get the bread in. Yesterday the handle took a few tries to stay down. But here's the thing...in looking for a new toaster, I found the feedback to be pretty much the same for inexpensive and more expensive toasters, so I choose one (not this same one) in my price range that had the least amount of 1 stars. A toaster that lasts 20 years is gone gone gone.

uneven toast?
I was never one to read reviews until I retired and have more time.now I'm afraid to buy anything electric because everything seems to break down nowadays.when I was a kid we had the same toaster for like 20 years with no problems.we would even light cigarettes off it and it lasted forever.no I read about toasters quitting after just 5 months or less, that's insane.

This was a real gem, until it wasn't
I got this basic toaster on sale and it did its job for the past 5 months. I noticed white smoke the last time I used it, so I thought cleaning out the crumbs would stop that. I emptied the crumb tray, and shook it upside down, just to make sure I got everything out. I don't know if that's what did it, but this toaster quit soon after. I've never had a toaster this sensitive, nor one that quit on me in less than a year.

Toaster slots not wide enough to accommodate Panera bagels.
Toaster slots are NOT wide enough to accommodate Panera bagels. You would think with the specific “Bagel” button, that this toaster would be designed correctly to easily and effectively toast bagels. You would be wrong. You have to jam the bagels in the slots to toast them, and then prod, pry, and cajole them out afterwards. Not worth the trouble, even with the “under $20” price tag. If bagel-toasting is your intention, invest in a better toaster with wider slots for that purpose.
