Description
I wanted to create a purple shampoo that was great for toning blondes + brunettes, that was also sulfate-free... I’ve always had a hard time finding that combo. If you like ashy tones or even pastel lavender tones, you can use this every time you shampoo. If you like neutral tones, use it only when needed to cut brass. Use this with or without The One Purple Conditioner on natural or color treated hair.
Toning time!
How to:
1. Depending on the thickness of your hair, apply a dime to quarter-sized amount of shampoo into your palm.
2. Apply to wet hair, massaging into the scalp to create a rich lather.
3. With purple shampoo you want to make sure you apply more product where you see more brass. I like to let it sit a little longer toward the top where hair is less porous and tends to be warmer in tone (2-3 min), then I let it run down through the ends where it's more porous for less time (1-2 min).
4. Rinse well and follow with conditioner or a hydrating mask.
Tip: Once your hair is toned, pause on using until you need it again. If you ever go overboard, shampoo with a clarifying shampoo + condition well.

Q: Hi, our shower stall stained purple because we didn't clean it off well enough. How can we remove the stains. It is either an acrylic or fiberglass. Is the purple component ammonia based or what?

A: Happy to help! We can assure you that while this is very uncommon, our purple shampoo is a highly pigmented formula and it's possible for the tone to transfer to porous surfaces. We recommend trying Isopropyl alcohol or Baking Soda to remove the surface stains.

A: Hi Lorena, thank you for your question. Just to clarify, when you say black hair, are you referring to color or texture? If you're referring to color, it will be fine. You won't see any toning effects if your hair is black but there is no harm in using it. If you're looking for something to put a purple hue to your black hair color, this will not be strong enough. Let me start by saying I have Asian hair and have dyed it quite a bit. I’ve purchased other purple shampoos and this was by far my least favorite. This really dried out my hair. I’d have to apply it twice in one sitting just to feel like it was really cleaning my hair. I’ve already switched to another brand (at target), that is moisturizing and leaves my hair feeling soft after one use. I really wanted to like this, especially with the great photos of how it helps keep hair blonde - but this did not work for me! Glad I kept looking, my new one (which is less), is great so far!!

Haven’t really found a purple shampoo (especially drugstore) that tones and brightens my hair like this one. The smell is amazing too and it lingers in your hair for days. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is unfortunately, I think it does fade my color faster than other shampoos. I still buy it to use when I need a little brighten/tone though, while using my Kevin Murphy shampoo (a color safe shampoo) all the other times I wash.

To me this was alright. I can’t really say if it worked or not. I had blonde streaks in my hair, so I would use this to help tone it. I felt it didn’t do much, but it might have helped a little bit throughout me having the streaks.

I actually believe this is an excellent toning shampoo- but my hair is very porous and this shampoo is so potent, my hair was lavender after one use (not what I was looking for). It did not dry out my hair at all, and my hair felt great after using.

I have bleached platinum hair. Great toning shampoo. Almost wish it pulled more purple. That said, I don't see what anyone means about it being drying. I kinda wish it was a little more intensively clarifying but I just use a clarifying shampoo before hand.

While the Kristen Ess Purple Shampoo is moisterizing, I do not feel like it provided the toning that I was seeking on my greying hair. I noticed multiple spots where the tint appeared mauve in color rather than brightening my white/silver hair. The color looked drab overall.

If I could give zero stars I would. This product destroyed my hair. I literally can’t brush through it and it turned my blonde highlights white. My hair has never felt more damaged in my whole life. And this was only after ONE wash. I’m so disappointed. I was so excited to use this.

I have used this product 2 days in a row. I recently had my hair bleached and it pulled some gold. I have used other purple shampoos before and they would tone my hair to be more blonde than yellow. So far it has taken out some of the brassiness but not all of it. I have left it on for a longer time and it hasn’t lightened it to where I want. I will continue to use.

I have been using blonde toning shampoos for over 10 years now. I hated how most either dried my hair out or didn't even work. This one smells great, leaves my hair soft and actually works. I leave it on in the shower for about 5 min and it perfectly tones it. I always use another shampoo first to get full cleansing power, as I really only use this one to tone. Not sure how effective it is for cleansing, but that's not the main purpose for me. Super pigmented and smells wonderful! Will continue to buy this!!
