Q: I have heard that cast iron skillets can damage smooth top (glass) electric stoves. Is that correct?
A: Manufacturer of my glass top cooktop recommends against using cast iron. It easily scratches and can shatter it.
submitted byK - 4 years agoA: Totally fine on my glass cooktop, but it's extremely important that you don't move the cast iron (like shaking the pan during frying) back and forth or drag it across the cooktop. I *have* dropped a cast iron dutch oven onto the cooktop and it shattered mercilessly! Just be VERY careful each and EVERY time you use it on a glass cooktop.
submitted bySeattleite - 8 years agoA: No this is not true. I only use cast iron skillets and my glass top stove has never been damaged by it. Just don't drop them on the stove because they are heavy! But anything heavy dropped on the glass might crack it. I LOVE my cast iron!

Q: Does it come with the red silicone holder?
A: Yes, the one I got did. I ordered the Lodge 12" Cast Iron Skillet, and although it is shown in the picture, it is not mentioned in the description. I thought "why would they show a picture of it with the handle if it's not included?" I saw the answer from Lodge Manufacturing saying that it is not included, and was pleasantly surprised when mine came with the silicone handle.

Q: Some reviewers are saying that these pans from Target are inferior to the ones direct from the actual manufacturer. Specifically, that these are rough and not smooth like those from Lodge website. Is this true?
A: I purchased a 13(.25) pan at my local store and I did notice by the outer edge by the helper handle what looks to be some grind marks, probably caused when they are removing the excess material after casing. Now I'm complaining, but I do wonder if there are pieces that Lodge makes that aren't totally perfect become seconds and sold at discounted prices. I have many other Lodge pieces and have pretty much purchased then from discount/close out stores and have never had any problems with any of them.

The products available from Target (both in store and online) are made the exact same way as those sold directly on the Lodge website. Lodge does not offer a different quality of cookware to Target. The roughness comes from the sand molding process used to cast the cookware. Because each mold is unique, the casting formed in it will be as well. Lodge works hard to keep the casting surfaces as consistent as possible, but there may be slight variations. Seasoning build helps to create a smooth surface as the cookware is used. Q: How deep is the skillet? Can I use it for deep frying?
A: It's only about 2 1/2 inches deep, so works for pan frying not deep frying.
submitted bySassy1 - 8 years agoA: No, I wouldn't use it for that purpose, it isn't very deep for actual "deep-frying". It's a skillet, so can be use for frying but not deep-frying.

Q: Does a bonifyed chef like a preseasoned or regular cast iron pan?
A: America's Test Kitchen recommends preseasoned so that is what I'm going with.
submitted byKim - 9 years agoA: All cast iron cookware (that isn't enameled) needs to be seasoned before using. But whether it's preseasoned at the factory or home seasoned, it's still not totally seasoned. It takes years of use to get the smooth/slick coating on the bottom that is truly non stick. That's why it you find a pan at a garage sale/flea market grab it.

Q: How many degrees in the oven can this withstand?
A: It can withstand up to 550 degrees. If over that, you can start burning off the seasoning.

Q: Hi, first time user here. Do I need to preseason before first use, and if so how do I do that? Also, what type of oil can I cook with? Is that different from what you rub it down with before storing?
A: Lodge Cast Iron comes pre-seasoned, this means we have done the first layer for you. There is no need to season in the oven. Since seasoning is an ongoing process, you will need to rub the cookware with cooking oil before and after each use to help build up additional seasoning layers. Since the pan is new, I would wash with hot water, clean with a nylon bristle brush or non-scratch pad, rinse, hand-dry immediately, and rub the surface with cooking oil. Now the pan is ready to be used or stored. You can cook with any cooking oil, but after you have cleaned the cookware you need to wipe down with a high grade cooking oil, like vegetable or canola.

Q: How do you wash after use?
A: You can wash with a little soap and hot water using a nylon brush or pad. Rinse and towel dry, then while the cookware is hot/warm wipe down with cooking oil before storing away.
