A: Because the kettle can be removed from the base. The base is what is corded.

A: Hi CJeff. the element does not come directly in contact with the water, it's encased. The heating element is mad of Nichrome and the product in made in China.

The kettle worked great and I was happy with it, right up to when it did not work great. About a week after purchase it started shutting off prior to reaching a rapid boil and then turning on when the temperature had cooled a little. I am wondering if it was just mine that had the glitch or if they all tend to have this malfunction.

Great product. Kettle is large enough to hold plenty of water; heating is very quiet; lid opens and closes easily; easy to clean; fun to watch. -1 star for the tea infuser, which has to be attached to the bottom of the lid. This is not very useful, because one would either have tea leaves in the water as it is heating, have to remove the lid after boiling to attach the tea infuser, or leave the lid with attached infuser off while water heats (which is probably a very bad idea.)
