Well… ummm… it’s dirt. I guess it’s better than other dirt because it has plant vitamins in it. But it’s dirt. It’s a necessary thing if you want plants to survive… call me crazy… but yup it’s dirt.

Fungus

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix with Fertilizer and appreciate your feedback. Fungus gnats do not typically damage houseplants but they are a nuisance. The larvae look like tiny white grubs or maggots and feed on the fungus that naturally grows in potting soil. The adults are small and dark and may enter the air holes in the bag to lay eggs while the soil is waiting for sale. 1. Let the soil dry out between each watering. Dry soil can help kill the larvae. Most people tend to overwater their plants and this can make the problem worse. 2. Yellow sticky traps are another alternative. Place them close to the location of the fungus gnats. 3. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of established potted container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. Do not apply sand to seedlings or if trying to start plants from seeds. This can damage or hinder seedling development. 4. Insects will not disappear overnight. It may take several weeks but the consumer should begin to see a reduction in insect numbers. All houseplants in the home must be treated. 5. Severely infested plants may need to be repotted however the larvae may remain in the root ball when the plant is moved to a new pot. Remember the larvae themselves rarely damage plants but eat the fungus that grows in all unsterilized potting soil. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-295-6902 if we can further assist.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix) and appreciate your feedback. Small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our soil. You should not find large pieces of wood or bark. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. Would give zero stars if I could. Ended up with a SERIOUS gnat problem. The soil of the plants I repotted with miracle grow is crawling with them after weeks. The eggs must’ve hatched.
1 reply from Miracle-Gro Consumer Services team - 1 month ago
This is not the expectation you should have with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. We appreciate your feedback. Insects could not survive the composting and packing process. However, it is possible for them to enter the bag during shipping and storage. Insects may also come in with the soil of transplanted plants or enter through cracks, crevices, open windows or doors simply looking for a suitable environment. The small flying insects are likely fungus gnats. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil), but can be a nuisance. A possible way to control fungus gnats includes allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering, which will help control the larvae. Also, you can try applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants; the larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 877-220-3089 if we can further assist.

Disappointed w/ Gnat Infestation from Miracle-Gro

2 out of 5 stars
Lilian - 3 months ago

I purchased the Miracle-Gro Potting Mix to improve the quality of my plant’s soil, but instead, it led to a serious gnat infestation in my home. The gnats quickly spread from the plants to the entire house, and nothing I’ve tried has worked to get rid of them. I’ve attempted several solutions, including watering with hydrogen peroxide, allowing the soil to dry out completely before watering again, and using plant-safe insecticides, both spray and aerosol. Unfortunately, none of these methods have resolved the issue. I’m convinced that the larvae came with the potting mix, and I’m really disappointed with this experience. I hope this issue can be addressed.

We are concerned to hear this with our Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. he soil you purchased is a natural product. While we do not sterilize the soil it is composted to kill any harmful insects and microbes. Unfortunately, soils may become infested with insects while in storage or while they are waiting for sale. In some cases, soils become infested with fungus gnats. Fungus gnats enter the bagged product through the tiny air holes in the bag that are necessary for the soil to "breathe". Fungus gnats are often mistaken for fruit flies. They do little damage but are unpleasant if present in large numbers. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. -To catch the adults you can try putting a small bowl of cider vinegar with a drop of dishwashing liquid near the houseplants or use yellow sticky traps. We would like the opportunity to gather some additional information and offer assistance. Please reach out to our Consumer Services team at 888-295-6902 for assistance.

Plants dying

This spring I purchased Miracle Grow Potting soil from the big box store. I found weird stuff in the unopened bag. Big chunks of wood, things that looked like plastic, etc. Every plant I planted and transplanted has gone down hill. Leaves turning yellow, not over watering, limp.... just bad. Failure to thrive for sure. What has happened to your product. Are you having this stuff manufactured in China?

This year was a very bad batch. I usually purchase 4-5 2 cubic foot bags every year for my potted plants and usually it does well but this years batch was awful. none of the bags were good, I don't think there was any food in the medium whatever they used, it looked really fibrous and not very dirt like. I will have to think long and hard next year before buying another bag of this stuff.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. Sometimes, if plants are recently transplanted, they may undergo transplant shock, which can impact their ability to take up the fertilizer from the soil. This may also happen if the soil is not kept at the proper moisture level, like a wrung-out sponge. Most of our soils, especially potting mixes and garden soils, are made of composted forest products. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction which often occurs with potting mixes composed primarily of actual topsoil.
