Hard pass
The book starts off with talking about the parent’s divorce just like every movie today. Then the pilot dies and the boy is alone. Alone in the woods with all the thoughts of his troubled home life. No thanks, save your child and have them read a book that will better them in life.

A must read for young adults!
I was required to read this when I was in school, probably 4th or 5th grade. I ended up reading all of Gary Paulsens books, and now passed on The Hatchet to my son, who is in 5th grade. He enjoyed it as well. It is a coming of age tale and gives kids something to think about. While we all encourage that our children read and agree that even reading frivolous stories is acceptable. Once in a while, however, you have to throw in a book that makes them think and see the world a bit differently. This is one of those books.
