Great book however I found what either appears to be a stain or a misprint once I got halfway through the book.

Starts strong, becomes gratuitous
Shakespeare wrote tragedies that could move you, entertain you, make you sad and leave you wanting for more, all in 3 acts. A Little Life is not Shakespeare. I love the first page, the first chapter, the first "act" of A Little Life. But as a neared the middle of the novel, it became a slog. I felt like some of the story was contrived or added in just for length. And I felt like the subject matter (child SA) was being teased and made alluring. Other content (adult physical abuse) was drawn out to abusrd, gratuitous lengths. And so I did not finish this book. At the 400 page mark, I gave up. I knew where this book had to end, and I didn't want to wade through another 400 pages to get there. I went and read Wikipedia to learn the remainder of the story and my suspicions were confirmed and I saw I had made the right choice. This author is pretentious and writes like she is paid by the word. I felt like she was coaxing me along with each chapter, revealing a little bit of the main character's backstory in a tempting way. And I felt dirty for wanting to hear more about something horrendous.

Exceptional
This is the best book I’ve ever read. A word of caution: the emotional weight of this book is HEAVY. It was not made for everyone.

Beautiful writing and character development
It is rare to find a book that focuses on male friendships, especially one that intertwines all of the characters so finely. Yanagihara's writing style is beautiful; I have been enthralled with this novel and also heartbroken.

So slow
If you want a book that catches you the first few pages…actually the first 100 pages, this isn’t for you. I describe this as a very long winded with tons of unnecessary extra information version of A Child Called It. I got to page 100 and gave up and went online and read the spark notes. I’m glad I gave it up. This world is messed up enough, I don’t need a book to remind me how evil humans can be. And I love me a good thriller/horror with insanely inappropriate plots, but this was just too much for a fiction.

Hype weapped in a provacative cover.
Annoying, drawn out, over the top trauma voyeurism.

Wonderful book! Trigger warnings though
Made me bawl my eyes out. Trigger warnings everywhere but amazing amazing book. You might be sad a few weeks after lol. I think this book changed my life a little, shifted me in the sense of questioning life a bit and the people in my life that bring me joy and meaning. 10/10 would recommend but must be in a semi functional mental state.

Be careful with this one!
A lot of book tell stories where you are able to see the character(s) heal over time and this is just one example of a character who simply can’t. At its core this book is about friendship and love but it doesn’t always feel like it. Deeply moving and upsetting with tender and beautiful moments hiding in between the harder parts to read. Check your trigger warnings before reading.

Damaged
Never buying books for delivery or pickup at Target anymore. It came damaged. Next time I’d just go to the store myself so I can see the quality of the book I’m paying for
