Expensive mistake
This was an investment for our family with a hefty price tag. It last just over a year before breaking. My husband has emailed company to see a way to rectify this as it was such a short lifespan for such an expensive product with no response. He’s also handy enough to try and repair to no avail. Extremely disappointed. High price tag, no reward. Would have been better off in the TikTok shop spending less.

Works well. Best ice around.
This is our third Opal. It is still relatively new so time will tell if this will be durable. Overall, the set up, use, and cleaning instructions are straightforward. The new design is modern and appealing. The new panel lights and wi-fi connectivity are quite good. This version seems to be a bit quieter when running than the previous versions and the exterior surfaces are a bit more finger smudge resistant.

Design is improving
This would be our 4th machine over a 12 year period. We have been using these since before “Opal” was bought by GE and they took over branding them in their name. We opted for this new ULTRA model because of the new extra filtration and cleaning updates/upgrades (plus the compressor conked-out in our 3 year old 2.0). Reason the other models failed in the past is because we didn’t stay up on 100% cleaning the critical INTERNAL parts. WE DID EVERYTHING (and more) the manual and website (and some blogs out there) called for But in all fairness, GE needs to provide a far more in-depth process to clean out the mold and scaling that will inevitably build up no matter how many times you use bleach or descaling liquid or vinegar (you need to actually clean these internal parts by hand). There are a few good YouTube videos out there that show you how, but GE needs to STEP UP and OWN this. The new Ultra itself is sleeker than the previous, we like the new black color and the few tweaks made to the design here and there. We just got the new one up and running this afternoon, so we’ll see how it goes.

Horrible Upgrade
I had the older model of this and it was great! Actually kept the ice cold, came with a bigger side tank, all in all it was a great machine until it stopped making ice. I upgraded to this one because that’s the only one I could get locally and this thing is a piece of junk! My ice is constantly melting. The side tank I have to refill at least twice a day because it’s so much smaller than the other one. The older one I could refill my side tank maybe once a day and it would last. I hate his machine and really wish I could’ve gotten the older model because this thing is junk. Not to mention all of the connecting issues and poor design. Definitely go with the older model if you can.

We’d like to clarify how your Opal ice maker works. This unit isn’t designed to keep ice frozen for extended periods. Instead, it continuously produces fresh ice nuggets, and as the existing ice gradually melts, new ice is made to replace it. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the side tank and will be sharing your comments with our product team for further review. For further assistance with your unit, you can contact our Opal team at 1-866-907-6718.

Ok, but be prepared to baby it
The unit stopped working after one week until I pulled out the filter. Then it finally started working again. This unit still needs some work.

We want to be sure you are getting the best performance from your Opal Nugget Ice Maker. We recommend using distilled water. If using tap water, the cleaning schedule may need to be adjusted based on the hardness of your water. Harder water may require more frequent descaling or switch to using distilled water. Please review the following link with a chart that will come in handy. https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=000062600

Loud Whining, Banging Noises
We purchased the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker in January 2026. We have followed the recommended cleaning and descaling instructions/procedures as shown in the instruction manual. We have only use filtered water to fill and clean the appliance. The machine is making loud, banging noises as illustrated and heard in the attached video. This is our second GE Profile Opal Ice maker.

Price
Ice is the best. Price is the only issue. And having to clean it.

The pricing of this icemaker is dependent on multiple factors. The economic elements can include distribution, warehousing, and availability, which account for a portion of the selling price of the appliance. This icemaker does require frequent maintenance to ensure the best ice production possible.

DO NOT BUY!!! JUNK!!
I HAVE WAITED FOREVER TO GET ONE OF THESE. I FINALLY GOT ONE, AND IT DOES NOT WORK RIGHT!!! ALL IT DOES IS CONSTANTLY USE WATER, MAKES THE “ICE”, WHICH IS ACTUALLY SLUSH, AND IT MELTS ABOUT AS QUICK AS IT’S MADE, IT MELTS, AND IT KEEPS MAKING THE SLUSH, AND MELTING AND USING WATER. SOMETHING THIS EXPENSIVE SHOULD ACTUALLY WORK!!! AND TARGET WON’T LET ME RETURN IT. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! MY FRIEND HAS ANOTHER BRAND THAT WAS LESS THAN $100. THAT WORKS BETTER THAN THIS!!******

Good ice but too loud
It makes great ice and everything is clear and straight forward in general maintenance. Descaling and cleaning it is not an issue. The noise issues didn’t start until 3 months of operation. My poor review is due to the manufacturing defect with the appliance where after several months of operation I can audibly hear a part failing inside. It sounds like a small motor failing on a pump or rotating driver inside the machine. I don’t see Instruction anywhere on how to grease or lubricate anything on the ice machine. It’s fine if parts are going to wear over time but at least advise or give guidance on how to lubricate it or prevent wear. The ice machine is screaming at me overnight. It is too new for me to go into it so I am going to try and call and see if anyone on their technical team can advise on how to solve the issue.

We’re glad to hear you’re happy with the ice the Opal produces, and we’d like to review the issue you’re having with sound. Noises you may hear from the Opal are discussed on page 14 of the manual; that’s linked here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. We also have an article discussing possible sounds, linked here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276. We recommend ensuring you’ve recently followed the full cleaning and descaling procedure described in the manual, starting on page 7. Going through that process can often help with an issue. We also suggest disconnecting the Opal from power for 3 to 4 hours, to reset it. We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss your situation further. We look forward to hearing back from you, so we can assist.

Nightmare
It is constantly telling me to sanitize and to descale even though I just completed in the past couple of days and I have done all the updates. It is really frustrating to say the least. In regards to the ice, the wife loves it. As the one who maintains it, I freaking hate it.

disappointed
purchased 3/03/26 1 week of use and sanitize button will not turn off. Tried all GE recommendations to clear with no luck. Appears to be a common problem with Opal 2.0 Ultra nugget ice maker with side tank

Might be a good boat anchor
I would rate this is zero out of five stars if I could. We've bought two of these icemakers in the last 18 months and neither of them have worked consistently. The newest one worked well for a month or two but will not make ice any longer. We have cleaned, descaled, ordered expensive filters and worked through the troubleshooting guide. The unit constantly displays “making ice” but no ice ever comes out. Complete waste of money and time. STRONGLY recommend any other brand!

OKAY SO FAR
I had trouble getting started. It kept saying ADD WATER. After long while (just about to give up) it started. I may edit review after the first time I add water to the side reservoir. And yes I followed the instructions to a "T".

One of my Best Buy’s ever.
Love the ice maker. The one thing I don’t especially like is the sanitation that comes on after such a short time, if you make ice a lot. No way it needs cleaning before the jug of water has made ice. But I do make ice constantly. Overall I don’t know how lived without one.

We recommend using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup which can create a variety of issues including unusual noises. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the Owner’s Manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. The online manual is available here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. The scale inhibiting filter will filter ~40 gallons of water before needing to be replaced. Replacement will be approximately every 3 months, though it will depend on your usage. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit. Also, clean the rear air filter offered on your model as described on page 10.
