Q: Vac is not working on shag carpeting. Suction is so strong that red light comes on for the beater bar and vac will not move. Anyone else have this problem?

submitted by Sharon P - 5 years ago
  • A: I also have this problem and I do not have shag carpeting. It's very annoying. I may need to return the vacuum if it does not get better.

submitted bykitchenchick - 5 years ago
  • A: Did you try opening the suction control so it is not so strong? Not sure if that will help because I do not have any shag carpeting.

submitted byKLoflin - 2 years ago
  • A: There is a suction valve on the handle. You just have to decrease your level of suction on shag or thicker carpeting. Very simple and effective.

  • A: Hello Sharon P, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulty with your Shark® vacuum. We ask that you reach out to Shark® Customer Care at 877-581-7375. Representatives are available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 9pm ET | Sat. 9am - 6pm ET. Thank you, The Customer Support Team

  • A: I have the same problem without shag carpeting. The beater bar just keeps stopping on carpet. The vac is brand new, right out of the box. I will be returning this. It seems like the beater motor isn't strong enough. Even my battery powered robot vac keeps its beater spinning on the same carpets.

submitted bytacosushi - 2 years ago
  • A: I purchased the vacuum today and having the suction opened at its max does not resolve the problem with the non-rotating roller on shag or high piled carpeting. I really wanted this vacuum to accomodate my needs but unfortunately I must return the unit.

Q: Can you do stairs with it?

submitted by Deb - 7 years ago
  • A: I noticed that Shark sells a motorized attachment on their website that looks like it would be great for stairs. Costs $50.

submitted byTargetJack - 2 years ago
  • A: You could do stairs, BUT its quite heavy and off balance. If you took tank off and only used the wand with the brush, but you still have to hold the tank or it falls over bashing the walls and furniture.

submitted bygrammy - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes, very easily. There is a lift away feature. Light and easy. Love this vacuum.

submitted byRoss - 7 years ago
  • A: This unit is great for leaning stairs as you can carry the lift-away portion while vacuuming stairs.

submitted byShark Support Team - 3 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Yes, but you have to take the dirt tank off and carry it with you as you go. Works pretty well.

Q: Where do you get the filters for this thing??????

submitted by JBIZZLE86 - 5 years ago
  • A: I would love to buy an extra filter for mine but don’t think they make them!

    submitted byRobin G - 3 years ago
  • A: I called Shark, and they referred me to the manual which states the following on page 19: RECOMMENDED FILTER CLEANING SCHEDULE: Pre-Motor Filter Kit (Foam & Felt) XFFT580 Clean every 3 months. Post-Motor Filter (HEPA) XHEP580 Clean once a year.

Q: Is it light weight and easy to handle?

submitted by potential purchase - 6 years ago
  • A: It is much lighter than a big bulky bag vaccum, and much easier to use. I love that I can easily switch to the attachments and back again.

submitted byDebbieS - 6 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit weighs 15.2 lbs and is very easy to handle.

submitted byShark Support Team - 3 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: I find it way heavier & more difficult to use (wobbles) than my Dysons :( Husband has to use this vacuum as I will not. Do agree lighter than a regular old type vacuum. Would never buy again even if works well because too heavy & wobbly for my liking.

submitted bydawn - 6 years ago

Q: Do the attachments store on the vacuum when not in use? Is there a place where these attachments are fastened when not in use? Or do you have to carry the attachments by hand?

submitted by erl - 6 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit has 2 spots on the back of the unit to store attachments.

submitted byShark Support Team - 3 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: The brush and wand (upholstery and crevice tools) attach to the unit. The model I purchased has a non-motorized head for wood and tile. That does NOT store on the unit.

submitted bymom of three - 6 years ago
  • A: Yes, they attach on the bottom in the back.

submitted byRoss - 6 years ago

Q: Is it rechargeable or corded?

submitted by Wolf0503 - 6 years ago
  • A: Corded - and it has a nice long cord!

submitted byKari - 6 years ago
  • A: It is Corded, not rechargeable

    submitted byAprill4882 - 6 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit is corded.

Q: I just bought this yesterday. We recently installed hardwood floors in our home. Is this vacuum OK to use on hardwood surfaces? I am nervous it will scratch!

submitted by Melg16 - 6 years ago
  • A: We would like to inform you that this unit is safe to use on all types of floors including hardwood floors.

submitted byShark Support Team - 3 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: When you turn on the hard wood floor mode the brush turns off so no concerns about scratching!

submitted byKari - 6 years ago
  • A: It has a hard floor mode and attachment; I've not had any issues with the vacuum.

submitted byomninexus - 6 years ago

Q: does this vacuum have suction control (ie for cleaning drapes/curtains)?

submitted by JJ - 6 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit does have suction control.

submitted byShark Support Team - 3 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Yes it does have variable suction control.

submitted bysshubb - 6 years ago
  • A: Not that I noticed but it does for carpet vs hardwood floors/linoleum. Comes with several attachments, so those may work for drapes.

submitted byDAY - 6 years ago

Q: what is the weight of it

submitted by P - 2 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit weighs 15.2 lbs.

submitted byShark Support Team - 2 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Why do some reviews list this as 21.2 pounds?

submitted byDan - 2 years ago

Q: Is the brush roll replaceable? Saw a user review that says it isn’t...

submitted by GDT - 4 years ago
  • A: Shark made the brush roll un-replaceable, even going so far as to make the base removal screws tamper-proof, thus ensuring that you'll need to replace the whole unit long before its useable life is over. Very disapppointing. My unit is only 5 years old and works great, but the brush roll is completely worn out.

submitted by - 2 years ago
  • A: Hello GDT, We would like to inform you that the brushroll for the Shark Navigator® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum is not replaceable. We hope this information helps. The Customer Support Team

It picked up pet hair well. It was heavy and hard to push even with the suction control on minimum. It also was not very easy to clean.

Best vacuum!

Best vacuum I have ever owned! The self propelling makes its so easy with no heavy pushing or pulling. The options for the bare floors turns the brush off for my hardwood floors. I use the min suction option for my thinner area rugs and it glides right over vs the suction making it grab like other vacuums. The breakaway cannister makes stairs so much easier. Highly recommend this vacuum.

Great Vacuum for first time shark users

This vacuum is so good! It picks up so much! The one thing I would say is make sure cords are away and all cloth stuff. The suction is so strong it will pick it all up. Also, it picks up so much hair and you may need to go clean the bottom of the vacuum so that it doesn't get stuck. I don't mind the maintenance but it does require it if you want it to last.

The suction on this vacuum is fantastic, it pulled so much dirt out of our carpet. Love the light, which helped me make sure I got all the glass I broke on my wood floor up, and the head of the vacuum is low enough that it fits under the toe kicks of my counters.

Best vacuum ever

I’ve been a Dyson fan so long that I didn’t give other brands a chance. But, my last Dyson was impossible to clean well enough to get musty dog odor from it that I just went out and bought the shark. I won’t go back to Dyson after this. I absolutely love this vacuum! I do wish the cord was longer but that’s my only “issue” with this product.

Cannot Just Replace the Roller

2 out of 5 stars

Now Unhappy Owner - 2 months ago
The vacuum does the job with respect to vacuuming, but basic maintenance is an BIG issue. We recently found that the roller had worn out. Difficult to access and remove the roller. Once I finally got it out, I was not able to find a replacement. Through extensive research, I was finally able to figure out that Shark now wants you to buy the entire Motorized Floor Nozzle (entire bottom of the vacuum) for $130+ including tax and shipping, or roughly 40% of the cost of a new vacuum. Do you really want to spend $130+ on parts replacement every couple years you need a $25 roller? Makes long term cost-of-ownership prohibitive. If someone has a different answer for this, please let me know. Have decided to purchase a new vacuum that allows you to do your own maintenance cost effectively. Also, be very aware when you order replacement parts that what you buy works with your model. This model number is ONLY for vacuums purchased at Target.

Motor breaks after a year

Judy - 2 months ago, Verified purchaser
I bought this vaccuum 4 years ago and had to call and have the motor replaced 3 times with each time having to pay a 20 dollar shipping fee. This vaccuum is great and moves around nice and has great suction then about once a year the motor stops working. If I have to call again for a new motor I'm just going to throw the thing in the trash and buy a Dyson. it's my first shark product and as far as longevity goes this does not meet the mark.

Ann T - 3 months ago
This is a great vacuum cleaner. I've had it for over a year and my only complaint is that it tips over very easily when using the wand, which is why I'm leaving a 4-star instead of 5-star review. It handles copious amounts of German Shepherd fur like a champ! The suction is super. I wish it came with more attachments.

Awful screech sound

2 out of 5 stars

Mamafow - 3 months ago, Verified purchaser
I have been so disappointed with this vacuum. Right out of the box it made a screeching sound and does that about 50% of the time I vacuum. I tried to exchange at Target and they wouldn’t and then I called the Shark to see what they could do and they were going to send me a replacement piece but charge me $20 for shipping. This is a big ticket item. I shouldn’t have to pay for a piece that was defected before I even received it. Now I’m stuck with a screeching vacuum that hurts our ears to use. I’m so disappointed! Honestly it feels way cheaper than my previous shark vacuum that I replaced with this one.

This is the worse vacuum you could buy. The rotating brush gets constantly stock and you have to manually rotate it so that it continue its function. I will be requesting a return. Do not buy.

Not the Shark you thought you were getting

Unhappy mom - 3 months ago
I had a Shark rotator lift away that had a broken belt so I replaced it with this Shark I thought I’d love. Wrong. This vacuum feels cheap, it’s a cheap plastic. The belt doesn’t work on my shag rugs and the red light comes on. The power button is now on the canister instead of the handle. You have to manually adjust for types of carpet and suction in two different places. The headlight on the handle was not added to this model either. I am going to try and return it. I’m so unhappy. I’m going to try and repair my old one. Do not buy.
