Q: Vac is not working on shag carpeting. Suction is so strong that red light comes on for the beater bar and vac will not move. Anyone else have this problem?

submitted by Sharon P - 6 years ago
  • A: Hello Sharon P, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulty with your Shark® vacuum. We ask that you reach out to Shark® Customer Care at 877-581-7375. Representatives are available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 9pm ET | Sat. 9am - 6pm ET. Thank you, The Customer Support Team

  • A: I have the same problem without shag carpeting. The beater bar just keeps stopping on carpet. The vac is brand new, right out of the box. I will be returning this. It seems like the beater motor isn't strong enough. Even my battery powered robot vac keeps its beater spinning on the same carpets.

submitted bytacosushi - 4 years ago
  • A: I purchased the vacuum today and having the suction opened at its max does not resolve the problem with the non-rotating roller on shag or high piled carpeting. I really wanted this vacuum to accomodate my needs but unfortunately I must return the unit.

submitted byLadyJ - 3 years ago
  • A: There is a suction valve on the handle. You just have to decrease your level of suction on shag or thicker carpeting. Very simple and effective.

submitted byTargetJack - 4 years ago
  • A: Pull away instead of pushing forward

submitted byA - 3 months ago
  • A: I also have this problem and I do not have shag carpeting. It's very annoying. I may need to return the vacuum if it does not get better.

submitted bykitchenchick - 6 years ago
  • A: Did you try opening the suction control so it is not so strong? Not sure if that will help because I do not have any shag carpeting.

Q: Can you do stairs with it?

submitted by Deb - 8 years ago
  • A: Yes, very easily. There is a lift away feature. Light and easy. Love this vacuum.

submitted byRoss - 8 years ago
  • A: This unit is great for leaning stairs as you can carry the lift-away portion while vacuuming stairs.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: I noticed that Shark sells a motorized attachment on their website that looks like it would be great for stairs. Costs $50.

submitted byTargetJack - 4 years ago
  • A: You could do stairs, BUT its quite heavy and off balance.  If you took tank off and only used the wand with the brush, but you still have to hold the tank or it falls over bashing the walls and furniture.

submitted bygrammy - 8 years ago
  • A: Yes, but you have to take the dirt tank off and carry it with you as you go.  Works pretty well.

Q: Is the brush roll replaceable? Saw a user review that says it isn’t...

submitted by GDT - 6 years ago
  • A: Hello GDT, We would like to inform you that the brushroll for the Shark Navigator® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum is not replaceable. We hope this information helps. The Customer Support Team

submitted byShark Support Team - 6 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: You can buy replacement brush rolls on a certain "large-river" website, $11. These are not made or sold by Shark, but probably made in the same factory... All NV5XX models use the same brush roll.

submitted byVac Guy - 1 year ago
  • A: I disassembled my NV586 floor nozzle and removed the worn out brushroll (the screws are not tamper proof, you just need the right tools). Need Shark to tell me which brush roller to is compatible.

submitted byStevo - 1 year ago
  • A: Shark made the brush roll un-replaceable, even going so far as to make the base removal screws tamper-proof, thus ensuring that you'll need to replace the whole unit long before its useable life is over. Very disapppointing. My unit is only 5 years old and works great, but the brush roll is completely worn out.

Q: Where do you get the filters for this thing??????

submitted by JBIZZLE86 - 7 years ago
  • A: I called Shark, and they referred me to the manual which states the following on page 19: RECOMMENDED FILTER CLEANING SCHEDULE: Pre-Motor Filter Kit (Foam & Felt) XFFT580 Clean every 3 months. Post-Motor Filter (HEPA) XHEP580 Clean once a year.

  • A: https://www.thinkcrucial.com/ Think Crucial Unusual name for a replacement filter company but they have the best prices & have quality products. Free shipping.

Q: Is it light weight and easy to handle?

submitted by potential purchase - 7 years ago
  • A: It is much lighter than a big bulky bag vaccum, and much easier to use. I love that I can easily switch to the attachments and back again.

submitted byDebbieS - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit weighs 15.2 lbs and is very easy to handle.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: I find it way heavier & more difficult to use (wobbles) than my Dysons :( Husband has to use this vacuum as I will not. Do agree lighter than a regular old type vacuum. Would never buy again even if works well because too heavy & wobbly for my liking.

submitted bydawn - 7 years ago

Q: Do the attachments store on the vacuum when not in use? Is there a place where these attachments are fastened when not in use? Or do you have to carry the attachments by hand?

submitted by erl - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes, they attach on the bottom in the back.

submitted byRoss - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit has 2 spots on the back of the unit to store attachments.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: The brush and wand (upholstery and crevice tools) attach to the unit. The model I purchased has a non-motorized head for wood and tile. That does NOT store on the unit.

submitted bymom of three - 7 years ago

Q: Is it rechargeable or corded?

submitted by Wolf0503 - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit is corded.

  • A: Corded - and it has a nice long cord!

submitted byKari - 7 years ago
  • A: It is Corded, not rechargeable

Q: I just bought this yesterday. We recently installed hardwood floors in our home. Is this vacuum OK to use on hardwood surfaces? I am nervous it will scratch!

submitted by Melg16 - 7 years ago
  • A: When you turn on the hard wood floor mode the brush turns off so no concerns about scratching!

submitted byKari - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to inform you that this unit is safe to use on all types of floors including hardwood floors.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago

  • A: It has a hard floor mode and attachment; I've not had any issues with the vacuum.

submitted byomninexus - 7 years ago

Q: does this vacuum have suction control (ie for cleaning drapes/curtains)?

submitted by JJ - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit does have suction control.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Not that I noticed but it does for carpet vs hardwood floors/linoleum. Comes with several attachments, so those may work for drapes.

submitted byDAY - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes it does have variable suction control.

submitted bysshubb - 7 years ago

Q: what is the weight of it

submitted by P - 4 years ago
  • A: Why do some reviews list this as 21.2 pounds?

This vacuum served me well for years. I did a comparison at my home to measure if it picked up as much stuff as a much more expensive one, and it did. After tons of use, the cord needed to be replaced. That’s the only reason I donated it, hopefully someone handier than I am can fix it because it never changed in how well it vacuumed.

After several uses I am so disappointed. While I like the better filtration system and larger dust cup, this model gets an F in other categories. Firstly, there is no soft fiber rotator bar to pick up fine dust on hard surfaces and if you allow the regular beater brush to run on hard floors it makes a terrible racket. Second, the rotator brush does not have the blades to cut long hair and fibers so they all wind around the brush head, AND (another design flaw) the rotator brush has to be accessed only with tools to unscrew the bottom plate! This and now the thing makes a bad noise with every back-and-forth when the brush bar is in the on position. Going back today!

Never thought I get so excited over a vacuum cleaner, but here we are… this vacuum is amazing! I thought our previous one did a good job, until I used this Shark! With 6 cats in the house, we vacuum daily- sometimes twice daily… the first time I used this vacuum I had to empty the dust cup 5 times!!! 😱 it’s obviously quite powerful and picked up the slack from our old one! Also, I am very petite and sometimes have a hard time pushing the vacuum around on the carpet, not with this one!! This thing has some sort of power drive feature and it just took off!

I own a cleaning company and service about 15/20 houses a week, running this about 30ish minutes per house (roughly 2 hours a day). It gets USED. We go through about 1 every 4-6 months. I wish there were fins, because you can imagine how much hair gets caught. Other than the fins, it is the best vacuum out there, bar none. I’m on my 15th vacuum, and will never use another make or model ever again.

Great on carpet only!! Does not do great on floors and will not vacuum rugs. Roller stops when you go over rugs and suction not powerful enough to pick up everything off floors. I need an all in one vacuum

I would NOT recommend this vacuum. The weight is very unequally distributed. The canister is connected to the head and the head pivots too easily, causing it to swing everywhere. It, also, does not go under any furniture because the canister is on the bottom. Really sorry I bought this!

I’m not sure why this vacuum has poor ratings, I purchased mine a few months ago and have used it daily. I have two beagles that shed A LOT. This vacuum has made a difference compared to my previous bissel as if it was night and day. The suction is fantastic. When using it on the floor, I can feel the vacuum pull itself along the carpet. Using the wand, when on its highest setting it will get stuck to the couch it’s so strong. It has cleaned up tacky baking soda I thought was dry enough…but it wasn’t…and left my carpet looking completely clean. This thing is a beast. Well WELL worth the money ( and in comparison to other vacuums it’s not as expensive). I love this vacuum!!!!

I've had this vacuum for less than 7 months. It is already broken. The roller doesn't spin and it needs to have a chip replaced that signals the roller to turn on when unlocked for use. Wheels squeaked and made a "skree" sound when rolling across the floor fresh out of the box. It has powerful suction but I would still not recommend this vacuum. Very disappointed considering the cost and the quality Shark has produced in the past.

We've had this vacuum several years now. It picks up a lot of dust from our carpet. Absolutely love it!! Great adjustable suction. I do wish the cord was a little longer but I totally recommend purchasing it. Very user-friendly and intuitive. I definitely recommend for carpeted homes. It's not as easy to whip around as a stick vacuum on tile but still a great purchase.
