Q: Vac is not working on shag carpeting. Suction is so strong that red light comes on for the beater bar and vac will not move. Anyone else have this problem?

submitted by Sharon P - 6 years ago
  • A: Hello Sharon P, We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulty with your Shark® vacuum. We ask that you reach out to Shark® Customer Care at 877-581-7375. Representatives are available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 9pm ET | Sat. 9am - 6pm ET. Thank you, The Customer Support Team

  • A: I purchased the vacuum today and having the suction opened at its max does not resolve the problem with the non-rotating roller on shag or high piled carpeting. I really wanted this vacuum to accomodate my needs but unfortunately I must return the unit.

submitted byLadyJ - 3 years ago
  • A: I have the same problem without shag carpeting. The beater bar just keeps stopping on carpet. The vac is brand new, right out of the box. I will be returning this. It seems like the beater motor isn't strong enough. Even my battery powered robot vac keeps its beater spinning on the same carpets.

submitted bytacosushi - 3 years ago
  • A: Did you try opening the suction control so it is not so strong? Not sure if that will help because I do not have any shag carpeting.

submitted byKLoflin - 3 years ago
  • A: There is a suction valve on the handle. You just have to decrease your level of suction on shag or thicker carpeting. Very simple and effective.

submitted byTargetJack - 3 years ago
  • A: I also have this problem and I do not have shag carpeting. It's very annoying. I may need to return the vacuum if it does not get better.

Q: Can you do stairs with it?

submitted by Deb - 8 years ago
  • A: This unit is great for leaning stairs as you can carry the lift-away portion while vacuuming stairs.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: I noticed that Shark sells a motorized attachment on their website that looks like it would be great for stairs. Costs $50.

submitted byTargetJack - 3 years ago
  • A: Yes, very easily. There is a lift away feature. Light and easy. Love this vacuum.

submitted byRoss - 8 years ago
  • A: Yes, but you have to take the dirt tank off and carry it with you as you go.  Works pretty well.

submitted bysherrig - 8 years ago
  • A: You could do stairs, BUT its quite heavy and off balance.  If you took tank off and only used the wand with the brush, but you still have to hold the tank or it falls over bashing the walls and furniture.

Q: Is the brush roll replaceable? Saw a user review that says it isn’t...

submitted by GDT - 5 years ago
  • A: I disassembled my NV586 floor nozzle and removed the worn out brushroll (the screws are not tamper proof, you just need the right tools). Need Shark to tell me which brush roller to is compatible.

submitted byStevo - 11 months ago
  • A: Hello GDT, We would like to inform you that the brushroll for the Shark Navigator® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum is not replaceable. We hope this information helps. The Customer Support Team

submitted byShark Support Team - 5 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: You can buy replacement brush rolls on a certain "large-river" website, $11. These are not made or sold by Shark, but probably made in the same factory... All NV5XX models use the same brush roll.

submitted byVac Guy - 8 months ago
  • A: Shark made the brush roll un-replaceable, even going so far as to make the base removal screws tamper-proof, thus ensuring that you'll need to replace the whole unit long before its useable life is over. Very disapppointing. My unit is only 5 years old and works great, but the brush roll is completely worn out.

Q: Where do you get the filters for this thing??????

submitted by JBIZZLE86 - 6 years ago
  • A: I would love to buy an extra filter for mine but don’t think they make them!

    submitted byRobin G - 4 years ago
  • A: https://www.thinkcrucial.com/ Think Crucial Unusual name for a replacement filter company but they have the best prices & have quality products. Free shipping.

  • A: I called Shark, and they referred me to the manual which states the following on page 19: RECOMMENDED FILTER CLEANING SCHEDULE: Pre-Motor Filter Kit (Foam & Felt) XFFT580 Clean every 3 months. Post-Motor Filter (HEPA) XHEP580 Clean once a year.

Q: Is it light weight and easy to handle?

submitted by potential purchase - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit weighs 15.2 lbs and is very easy to handle.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: I find it way heavier & more difficult to use (wobbles) than my Dysons :( Husband has to use this vacuum as I will not. Do agree lighter than a regular old type vacuum. Would never buy again even if works well because too heavy & wobbly for my liking.

submitted bydawn - 6 years ago
  • A: It is much lighter than a big bulky bag vaccum, and much easier to use. I love that I can easily switch to the attachments and back again.

submitted byDebbieS - 7 years ago

Q: Do the attachments store on the vacuum when not in use? Is there a place where these attachments are fastened when not in use? Or do you have to carry the attachments by hand?

submitted by erl - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit has 2 spots on the back of the unit to store attachments.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: The brush and wand (upholstery and crevice tools) attach to the unit. The model I purchased has a non-motorized head for wood and tile. That does NOT store on the unit.

submitted bymom of three - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes, they attach on the bottom in the back.

submitted byRoss - 7 years ago

Q: Is it rechargeable or corded?

submitted by Wolf0503 - 7 years ago
  • A: Corded - and it has a nice long cord!

submitted byKari - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit is corded.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago

  • A: It is Corded, not rechargeable

    submitted byAprill4882 - 7 years ago

Q: I just bought this yesterday. We recently installed hardwood floors in our home. Is this vacuum OK to use on hardwood surfaces? I am nervous it will scratch!

submitted by Melg16 - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to inform you that this unit is safe to use on all types of floors including hardwood floors.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: When you turn on the hard wood floor mode the brush turns off so no concerns about scratching!

submitted byKari - 7 years ago
  • A: It has a hard floor mode and attachment; I've not had any issues with the vacuum.

submitted byomninexus - 7 years ago

Q: does this vacuum have suction control (ie for cleaning drapes/curtains)?

submitted by JJ - 7 years ago
  • A: Not that I noticed but it does for carpet vs hardwood floors/linoleum. Comes with several attachments, so those may work for drapes.

submitted byDAY - 7 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit does have suction control.

submitted byShark Support Team - 4 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Yes it does have variable suction control.

submitted bysshubb - 7 years ago

Q: what is the weight of it

submitted by P - 3 years ago
  • A: Why do some reviews list this as 21.2 pounds?

submitted byDan - 3 years ago
  • A: We would like to let you know that this unit weighs 15.2 lbs.

Worked great, for only 7 months. Not worth the price point to have for less than a year. I wish I would have heeded the warnings of those before me, but alas here I am writing my own disappointing review. Don’t get it. Just don’t.

Lasted 4 months and the roller stopped working. Then tried to remove the lid to see if anything was stuck and it has odd shaped bolts that are 2 inches deep so you can’t reach it even when I had something that fit! They knew it would break and it’s probably an easy fix but made it impossible to fix on your own. We’ll see if the company has warranty.

Not covered by warranty, $140+ for replacement from Shark. Canister works fine. Half the price of a new vacuum.

We purchased last summer when we moved into our brand new home. Friday night I was vacuuming (I know exciting Friday night) and it just stopped working. The headlight still turns on but that’s it. We went with Shark because we didn’t love our Dyson but it lasted us years at our old house. We’ve tried everything and it’s not working at all. I’m so frustrated and disappointed.

1st one arrived with a broken part, replacement worked for 2 months before there were mechanical issues. Turns on and off overheats. Not my usual experience with Shark, I will buy a new Shark Vacuum, just not this one.

This is the second time I've purchased this vacuum because I like it that much! The last one still worked well even though it had a hole in the hose that I wasn't aware of. Decided to replace it and just buy a new one after 5 years of heavy use. I vacuum 3-4 times A DAY. And this vacuum has been incredible on our large area rugs. We all have allergies and its helped keep them at bay. Yes, you will occassionally have to detangle hair but that doesn't bother me. The bristles are so necessary to get deep into the carpet. We have tried the vacuums with no bristles and they just don't cut it. Highly recommend this Shark! Will buy over and over again.

I just bought this last week and my brush roll won’t turn on when in hardwood floor mode and it only turns on when switched to carpet mode and it’s soooo loud this doesn’t help me since I don’t have carpet. Will be retuning. For me it does pick up a lot of dust and fine dirt but only on carpet mode if I can just get one that will work iam sure it will do the job.

Not good for pet hair — 2 dogs and pet hair is stuck in the roller and I have to cut it out each time I vacuum. A MAJOR inconvenience. Wish I could return.

Easy to maneuver around furniture! Traded our Dyson for this vacuum. I must say it is far more powerful and no longer dealing with the constant clogging. Highly recommended vacuum!

I purchased the same Shark model that lasted me about 10 years. Suction can be adjusted on the wand, power head is great for pet fur, power head gets under the bed and gets the pet fur, plus has a HEPA filter!

Awful! Don’t buy it if anyone in the house has hair. It wraps around the beater bar and takes 30 minutes to cut it out then you have to vacuum again because it makes a mess. The wand hose is so tight that you can’t maneuver it without holding the canister. If you try to reach too far the canister falls over and smashes into your furniture and your legs and feet.

Chewed up throw rugs, too much suction.

We have a mixture of hardwood floors, thin and plush rugs, and average-pile carpet. We tried 4 Sharks. This Navigator Power Lift-Away had too much suction and chewed up rug corners and tore the lining underneath. Only the Shark Rotator Professional seemed to be able to handle the variety. We have one extremely plush rug and we have to drag and push the Rotator Professional pretty hard over it. That said, the Shark Lift-Away and Cordless Lift-Away, though they were fine for hardwood floors, had inadequate suction for most rugs and carpet and left lots of dirt and dust.

After having a Dyson (purple Animal) for 15 years, I purchased the Shark Navigator on sale, after getting recommendations from friends. This vacuum soundly beats the Dyson (albeit, a 15 year old Dyson which no longer worked as well as it did when it was new) without a doubt the vacuum I’ll recommend to everyone. The beater bar doesn’t get gummed up with hair like the Dyson always did and I feel the Shark beater bar is more powerful and works better, and the Barefoot Floor setting easily beats the Dyson (which was my only complaint initially with the Dyson, it seemed to be either always clogged or designed poorly for bare floors) - I’ve had the Navigator for 5 years now and it works just as well as the day I bought it. I wouldn’t pay full price unless I had to, as they routinely go on sale, but it’s definitely worth the full price.

This is the best vacuum I’ve ever had in my life. I have a Shefki and without this vacuum there’s no way I’d be able to keep up with his hair. It’s very versatile. I’m able to use it on my stairs. It’s lightweight and I can’t overstress how well it works. I’ve had it for over two years now.

I just purchased this after my 10 year old Electrolux Nilmble died. For two weeks I only used my Shark robotic vac while I researched a new vac. After tons of research and reaching out to a Labrador retriever FB for feedback. Sharks were highly recommended. I looked for best pricing and features. I knew I needed something for hardwood and carpet and did not want a separate wand for hardwood. I also wanted the tangle free brush. Target had this on sale for $100 off and I have several gift cards to use. I vacuumed a larger area rug the surrounding floor, two runners and kitchen floor. Filled the canister nearly full and was able to raise the nap on the area rug. ( 3 year old blk lab so some fur) My only dislikes thus far are the placement of the on/off switch and I wish the button for selecting hardwood to carpet was lit. ( it is on the handle so easy to transition. This model has headlights and the power lift ed away so the floor piece/brush rollers can be used with canister removed allowing you to reach under furniture.

I paid $299 for this vaacum and it was on SALE! I usually get the most up to date Shark vaacum available when I get one and this time mine died suddenly and I have had it for several years so I thought this is not cheap should do what I need it to do WRONG!! It does not do area rugs of ANY KIND! It feels cheap tbh. I can not utilize it for what I need this vaacum for its animals and kids and hardwood and carpet flooring. this would be okay for only short carpet but terrible price point for that.
