Q: does this have L-ascorbic acid?

submitted by Kathy - 4 months ago
  • A: Vanicream Vitamin C Serum uses tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate or THD ascorbate, which makes it both gentle and effective. Especially for those with sensitive skin.

    Brand expert
  • A: No, it has tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. This is gentler and more stable. Look for the YouTube video "BEST BUDGET Vitamin C Serum UNDER $20! | The Budget Dermatologist" for more info.

Q: What percentage Vitamin C is in the serum?

submitted by Ann - 3 months ago
  • A: Vanicream Vitamin C Serum has been developed with a stable yet potent form of vitamin c called tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate at a concentration gentle enough for all skin types (5%). Because it is lipid-soluble, it has enhanced absorption into the skin where enzymes transform it to ascorbic acid. You are getting the benefits of ascorbic acid in this innovative formula with gentle skin delivery to maximize efficacy and minimize sensitivity and irritation.

The best Vit C for sensitive skin

5 out of 5 stars

Never thought I’d be able to use vitamin c due to the flaking and irritation I would always encounter with l-ascorbic based versions. In comes this Vanicream Vitamin C with THD ascorbate that is much gentler on my skin, but is so, so effective. Creepiness and fine lines are reduced, and my skin has a significantly brighter glow factor to it. Definitely a holy grail for those sensitive to other form of Vit C!

This serum is Meg! Been using for almost 2 months now and I haven’t noticed any difference. The texture is milky which is nice (not too thick not too thin), it’s fragrance free but don’t think it does what it’s supposed to do. I don’t recommend and I won’t buy again

Bad reaction

1 out of 5 stars
Thumbs down graphic, would not recommend
Nicki - 1 month ago
Wanted to love this and was in denial that this product caused such a bad reaction. I used it for 3 days until I couldn't anymore because my face was so irritated. I've been a regular user of various forms of stronger vitamin C and have always tolerated them e.g. SC Ferulic, CeraVe Vitamin C, Sunday Riley, Drunk Elephant, Peter Thomas Roth, and more. This form of Vit C is supposed to be a lot milder but either I'm allergic to it specifically or something else in the inkey list. It did not instantly irritate my skin at all, but developed in the next days to a bumpy, burny, dermatitis breakout. Like another reviewer, my eyelids also swelled up like I had been bawling my eyes out. I'm not saying it's a bad product just beware that you may be one of the few that can get an adverse reaction to this.

I have not used a vitamin C product before. I have sensitive skin and rosacea, and I’d read that some forms of vitamin C can be irritating. I was super excited when I found this by Vanicream, since they’re such a trusted brand for sensitive skin. I’ve only been using this for a few days and I already see a positive change. I don’t experience any irritation and after applying, my skin looks more glowy and my skin tone looks a bit more even. I’m very happy with this product and will continue to use.

It is only 5% and you really want your vitamin c to be 15%. I did not notice any improvement in brightening or preventing pigmentation.

I LOVE that this is affordable Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD). It’s the only form of vitamin C that I can use without a skin reaction. I had previously been spending 4x this amount on Dr. Idriss THD. Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is a stable, oil-soluble form of skincare Vitamin C. This lightweight product blends in well. No scent, no irritation, just wonderful! The packaging does a good job of getting almost all the product out. When I can’t pump out anymore product, I cut open the container and the amount remaining is perfect for a single use on my face, neck, and hands.

Nice lightweight consistency, that easily blends. Great under makeup. If you are more oily/combination it provides perfect hydration. No breakouts, or irritation and gave me a brighter complexion.

I had heard this was great for sensitive skins but after 2 days of use I developed flushing redness all over my face and face feeling really dry and stinging. I’m still dealing with constantly redness after over a week and having to go see a dermatologist. Be careful and don’t do like me do a patch test on your face in a small area, proceed with caution if you have very sensitive and reactive skin.

I never leave reviews, but tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate with glycerin, no hyaluronic acid whatsoever, and all kinds of ceramides and phytosterols (plant-based fatty acids) for THIS price and you get a little more than just an ounce?! It sounds too good to be true, but it's not! I have dry skin, but with THD ascorbate being oil soluble, it'd be perfect for oily skin. 5% THD ascorbate is literally made for sensitive skin. It's a milky, moisturizing serum texture and it's fragrance free, but to me it smells vaguely like coconut. The most elegant formulation on the market, and I'm not even joking. You need about two pumps for your face and neck. I'm South Asian with extremely sensitive, light-medium, dry, dehydrated type 1 (ETR) rosacea, eczema, and allergy-prone skin. This is the ONLY vitamin C I've ever used that doesn't irritate my skin. It doesn't even burn if I use it over contact dermatitis or a bad eczema flare. I use it in the morning and sometimes also at night, under moisturizer. In general, Vanicream is the only brand that's guaranteed to not give me allergic reactions because of the specific ingredients they avoid using, so I am so thankful that they make a Vitamin C serum. I've been using it for a year and I haven't noticed any overwhelming results in terms of hyperpigmentation, but the fact that it boosts the effectiveness of my sunscreen is enough for me. And it's probably also boosting collagen production in my skin, because I'm 31, my skin is too sensitive to use any sort of tretinoin or retinoids, and for better or for worse, people still sometimes mistake me for being in high school. If you haven't, watch Dr. Shereene Idriss' Youtube videos or Tik Toks on the different forms of Vitamin C, and you'll know that tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is a good one! I recommend this to everyone no matter their skin type.

I love the texture of this serum. It is lightweight but still moisturizing. It is great for sensitive skin like mine since it contains no fragrance. THD is a stable form of Vitamin C so you don’t have to worry about it turning bad or yellow.

Dolly12 - 3 months ago, Verified purchaser
I never leave reviews but beware of you plan on wearing under makeup. Went on well. I then added my moisturizer with spf and a primer. Then I tried to blend my foundation in with a beauty blender and that's when it started to pill and get patchy. This was the only different product I used, so I know this was the culprit. Will try to use on non-makeup days but I bought for the purpose of a daily serum.

This didn’t irritate me in any way which was great however after finishing two bottles I haven’t seen any difference so I’m wondering if it really has vitamin c in it or if the dose might be too small for me to see a difference.

Ultra gentle vitamin C for people with sensitive skin or for people just getting into vitamin C. This serum has never irritated my skin and I can use it while using other actives in my regimen. It is lightweight and sinks in easily without being greasy. I love the airless pump packaging as well!

Solid drugstore option. Cosmetically elegant, comfortable to apply and wear, doesn’t pill, doesn’t flare my perioral dermatitis because there are no random ingredients - exactly what you need and nothing more. If I were a new vitamin c user I would be more impressed, but coming from higher concentration products (15%) to this (5%) meant it didn’t keep up with my needs. Will repurchase this if I have to ever re-build my routine due to sensitivity, post-procedure, etc. Totally recommend it for anyone just starting out or getting back into vitamin c.

Goes on well, feels nice and gives me a glow. I have sensitive skin with an oily t zone. I added this product into my skin routine and had a couple new blemishes (which rarely happens anymore with current skin regimen) appear the next day. Possibly some other factor, but would be an odd coincidence. Vanicream is a great brand and I love all their other products - this one just didn't seem to work for me.
