Q: Is this an a/c unit or a fan?

Q: Can this fan be installed with the window screen still in place? Or does the outside have to be clear of the screen?

submitted by Sam I be - 2 years ago
  • A: The Vornado Transom Window Fans are designed to be installed with the screen still in place to keep insects out.

Q: Can this be placed at the top of a double-hung sliding window? The top window pane can slide down.

submitted by Sam I be - 2 years ago
  • A: The Vornado Transom Window Fans are designed to be placed in the bottom of a window. There is an extended section on the bottom of the fan that fits into the track of the frame. This helps to keep it in place. This will not allow it to be safely and securely installed at the top. Please call our Consumer Care line at 800-234-0604 or email us at help@vornado.com for further assistance.

Q: Can this item be placed in a sliding window with a vertical opening.

submitted by Sam - 2 years ago
  • A: The Window Fans are designed to be installed horizontally in the traditional, bottom opening of a window. The shape of it, how it fits into the bottom groove and using the weight of the window to help stabilize it, make installing in the vertical position inadvisable. Installing the unit in a vertical orientation can create a strain on the motor and could affect the output and longevity of the unit.

Quiet and Effective, With One Big Design Flaw

I bought two of these fans a few years ago, and overall, they have worked really well for me. I put one in my living room window and one in my bedroom window during the summer. Both windows are on the shaded side of my house, which is also the ocean-facing side, and I feel like that definitely helps them bring in cooler air. One thing I really like is that they are surprisingly quiet, especially considering how much air they move. The one in my bedroom doesn't bother me at night, which is a big plus. I also like that you can set a temperature and let the fan adjust itself based on the temperature. That feature is really convenient. Although, I do sometimes wonder whether the fan is sensing the outside temperature more than the inside temperature. There have been times when the fan isn't running even though the room feels pretty warm, while it's noticeably cooler outside. The foam-style inserts are convenient for filling the space on either side of the fan, although they don't fit my windows perfectly. I have pretty standard-sized windows, so I was a little surprised by that. Every year, once the worst of the summer heat is over, I take both fans out and store them in my garage until the following summer. My biggest issue is cleaning. Since these fans are constantly pulling outside air into the house, it's not surprising that they get pretty dirty inside. What does concern me is the combination of dust and humidity and the possibility of some general ickiness building up inside the fan and then being blown into my house. Unfortunately, the fan isn't particularly easy to take apart and clean thoroughly. I've actually considered replacing my current fans with new ones simply because they've gotten so dirty inside. But then I think, what's that really going to accomplish? The new ones are eventually going to get dirty too, and I'll be right back where I started. So overall, I really like how these fans work and have been happy with their performance. They're quiet, convenient, and do a good job bringing cooler outside air into my house. I just wish Vornado had designed them to be much easier to disassemble and clean. For me, that's the biggest drawback and the reason I'm hesitant to simply replace my existing ones with new ones.

    Lookout for Off-Gassing

While this fan works perfectly well as fan, I can not believe the amount of off-gassing from this all plastic (mostly Vinyl?) product. When I opened the box I was overwhelmed by the smell of the off-gassing plastic so I took it outside to finish unpacking. After disposing of all the plastic packaging, I was still smelling the smell. So I left the fans (I bought two) outside for a few hours before installing them. But that did not help either. Their default setting is bringing air into the room. That was a mistake. The whole room then smelled like freshly-made off-gassing vinyl. The smell is coming from inside the fan! It's a shame because I was attracted to Vornado after having one of their all-metal oscillating fans for two decades at least. It finally stopped working so I invested in two new Transom fans. I'm not saying it was a mistake, but my wife got a headache from these fumes. If we had set it to exhaust for the first day or two that might have helped. But we wanted that cooler evening air in the room. New we can't get the smell of plastic out of the room. Beware.

Intake is great; Exhaust, not so much

This window fan was simple to install, provides a nice breeze even at mid-level, and is relatively quiet. The exhaust feature, however is not nearly as powerful as the intake. Here's the thing - the box clearly shows a photo of the unit turned around for exhaust (front facing out), although there is no mention of this in the instruction manual. I tried turning it around only to realize that with the control panel facing out, it is impossible to operate - neither manually nor with the remote. I suppose this feature is for the Alexa model only. Oh well :-( Other than that, I am happy with the Transom, and love the slim profile / appearance.

    Best Window Air Circulator Ever

I have been wanting to leave a review for some time now. This is the best appliance I have ever purchased. We are smokers and it has helped extremely to exhaust the smoke out. We purchased this years ago, use it everyday and it it is still working like new. Thank you for such a wonderful product.

    Disappointed

When set to exhaust mode, it's basically doing nothing. I do like the option to set a temperature and allow the fan to to turn on and off as needed, but it's not as strong as I expected in either mode.

    DO NOT BUY

This quite possibly might be the worst fan I have ever had the experience of using. This is not just a waste of money but a waste of space in landfills cause thats where they will all end up. It has a cool design thats all, but it puts out less air than a fart.

    Great at first

We own 4 of these. They've all started out great, but two, after a few months of use, suddenly got noisy. They both make loud, annoying, grinding and squeaking sounds. It's not the housing rattling, it's a flaw in the motor. The other two sound like they always did, but I imagine they'll eventually start doing this too. I'm really disappointed.

leaves much to be desired at that price

I bought this last year because my twin window fan was brittle from being in the sun for years. I thought getting something Alexa controlled might let me do more for controlling it, but I was wrong. And the basic controls leave much to be desired. when you set a temperature for it to come on at, it has no range so when it is over, it is on. as soon as the cooler air gets pulled in, it is off. then it heats up and is on again. right now it is off for 10s, then on for 40s. even though I would not call it loud, the stopping and starting draws my attention and makes the noise very annoying. a better design would have a temperature zone so it cools a little past what you want, and then gives it time to get back to the set temp before kicking back on. As for Alexa, you can cannot access the internal temperature sensor to write a more nuanced program to control it. you get stuck with the basic on/off at a single temperature. but you can have it change the fan speed at different times of day so I could have it turn on to full at night to get in the cold air, and then switch to only switch on during the day if the temperature was above a set point. Overall, the build quality is great, but the design of the controls sucks. also note, that the controls are on the lower right side so that you have to access that point. and it will not sit at the top of the window to vent hot air in the room, only at the bottom of the window.

Vornado looks and works great .

I've had my vornado for about 1 month fan cools my room nicely makes a soothing noise while operating not loud like most window fans . It was very easy to set up and looks great in your window very low profile. Comes with a small remote control as well and nice soft window expansion blocks to fill in the end to end gaps . I'm very happy with the fan no dought I will purchase another for my boys rooms upstairs.

I loved this fan so much I bought a second one for my son's room. I love that I can pretty much leave it in the window, even during a rain storm, because it is closed when it's off.

    Great Exhaust Fan

We live in a historic house built in 1909 and it does not have a kitchen hood or a simple way to install one. I saw the exhaust feature on this fan and thought it was worth a try. It works great. Quickly pulls heat and odors out of the kitchen. It was wild dumping a pot of boiling pasta into a colander in the sink and watching the steam get sucked outside. Makes a big difference in the summer rejecting heat. It is lightweight, low profile, easy operation. The insulated spacers do great making the unit fit in the window over the sink. Love supporting a Kansas company.

    Dorm Room Must Have

My son attended a college in a city and his dorm room was on the 20th floor of a high rise. There was NO air conditioning and it was HOT! Bought this to put in his window. Along with a couple of other oscillating fans, this helped keep his room cool. He kept it in well into November to help get fresh air into his space. We lost one of the soft-fit pieces but they have a whole set for sale on their site at a reasonable price.

finally a fan that fits my windoes

since I need to move the transom fan out of the window when it rains or if the AC is on it is a lot of effort to move the side pieces and replace them. I need to keep the empty box around so I don’t lose any pieces. it’s been cool here So I haven’t used the fans much but at least I have fans that fit my bedroom windows with the limited fan space. but the fans are not simple to move from room to room since there are so many losse pieces to keep track of
    fan hard to move
