Most gates offer pressure-mounted and hardware-mounted installation, and a few models are freestanding. Choose pressure, hardware, or freestanding mounting depending on the gate model and where you plan to use it.

Common walk-through features include a built-in walk-through door, self-closing or auto-close hinges, a hold-open option, dual or multi-step locks for child safety, and extra-wide door openings (often about 16–22 inches) to make passing through easier.

Several gates list ASTM certification and some carry JPMA certification. One designer model also references meeting U.S., Canadian, and European safety standards.

Some gates include glow-in-the-dark handles or illuminated grips for easier use at night. Many models and reviews also highlight one-handed latch operation and convenient walk-through doors designed for single-handed use.

Adjustable doorway gates commonly cover openings from the high 20s up to the low 40s of inches (example extended lengths shown around 37.8–42 inches). Multi-panel play-yard barriers can be configured to span much wider areas — examples show joined panels reaching up to 201 inches.

Hardware-mounted installation is required or recommended for stairway installations. Pressure-mounted gates are available for doorways and hallways but are not recommended at the top of stairs.

Many doorway or walk-through gates include two extension pieces (often about 4 inches each) and some models allow up to three extensions. Multi-panel play yards are commonly sold as six-panel sets for larger or freestanding enclosures.
