Children use bead sets for hands-on play such as sequencing, lacing, stacking, matching, and pattern-building. They also use beads for stringing and designing jewelry. Some kits add variety with water- or heat-fused designs.

Bead play supports fine motor skills, hand–eye coordination, dexterity, pattern recognition, and creative expression. Many kits also promote cognitive benefits such as focus and color recognition, and can support basic STEM thinking through sequencing and sorting.

Water-activated kits are finished by spraying the arranged beads with water to fuse them. Melty or fuse-bead kits are completed by covering the design with ironing paper and applying heat to melt the beads together.

Pony beads are commonly listed at about 8.5 × 6 mm with a hole diameter near 3.7 mm. Square or letter beads are often around 6 × 6 × 6 mm with a hole diameter close to 3.2 mm.

Many kits include built-in storage such as wooden trays, tin or plastic carry cases with handles, or palettes that double as storage, keeping beads and tools contained for travel.
