george orwell 1984 book review

1984 is a dystopian novel about totalitarian rule, mass surveillance, constant propaganda, and the suppression of individuality. It follows Winston Smith, a history clerk who rewrites the past for the state and struggles against an all-encompassing authoritarian system.

Editions are published in hardcover and paperback formats. Page counts across available editions range from about 336 to 416 pages.

Some special editions include new editorial material such as a new introduction, a foreword, a new afterword, or an epilogue by notable writers.

Critics emphasize 1984's visionary power and its focus on the corruption of language and truth, the dangers of totalitarianism, and the psychological and social consequences of propaganda and surveillance.

Deluxe hardcover editions note high production standards such as acid-free cream-colored paper, full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket.
